like it has been said by others, if this was just for mcdonagh id be ok with it perfectly fine but we threw in a 24 year old who has 43 points in 60 games for basically nothing, namestnikov is 25 years old and has 44 points on a line with kucherov and stamkos

howden and hajek better end up hitting their ceilings because if they dont i dont see how this can even be called an even trade

Guys, the second is conditional in the sense that it becomes a first if the Bolts win the cup.

Re: Howden, the kid is on pace for something like 44 goals and 115 points over a full WHL season.

He scored at a 100 point pace last season.

He's scored at the WJC.

He's scored in the AHL as a teenager.

He has progressed significantly in every season and in every area since being drafted.

This a legit prospect that we've talked about on here for weeks.
Honest question.

Is scoring like he is at his size and age in the WHL all that rare or impressive? I honestly don't follow it well enough to know, but dominating juniors two years after the draft sounds like a big older kid taking advantage of the fact that he's bigger and older.

Alright this is unpopular, but it's not a horrible trade IMO. It's not awesome, but not horrible. The initial reactions are two fold IMO - no Serg or Point, which was never going to happen IMO; and also the inclusion of Miller coming out of left field.

Howden is a very good (not great) prospect who looks like he's got top 6 C upside. If he turns into Stepan, that would be great.

Seems like mixed feelings on Hajek, but from the sounds of it he was the guy the Rangers really wanted. I have no choice but to trust their opinions on him, seeing as most people like Foote more. Especially considering he's a RHD. With that said, I think he's really the key to whether or not this is a good trade for us. I've read he can develop into a top-pair shut down D, and I've also read he's nothing special. I don't know enough about him to comment either way, but I do know that he's likely the key.

Hopefully we use the first to either move up in the draft or we nail the selection similar to Chytil last year. We'll see whether we get an additional 1st or 2nd too, but either way it's another top 60 draft pick, at worst. Fine with both of those.

I would honestly have been fine with a package of Howden, Hajek, 1st, and 2nd (no conditions) for McD. That seemed close to what was realistically expected all along. Subbing Hajek for Foote maybe would have been more ideal, but it is what it is.

The head scratcher is Namestnikov for JT. Granted, I don't know much about Namestnikov's game, so I'll reserve my judgement until I see him play. Both he and JT are RFA's after the season, and maybe JT's contract ask was a little too crazy for what the Rangers wanted to give him? I'm not sure...I've always loved JT and I think he'll thrive in TB. That one could hurt us...

Not getting any less pissed about this trade. The players we traded for have about a 10% chance of being anywhere close to as good as the guys we shipped out, and a couple of late firsts are unlikely to be impact players, either.

If you we going to trade McDonagh, you needed to get back a young roster player that had some kind of chance to be the same level player, even if that chance was small. That player was Sergachev, and Gorton blew it.

Libor f***ing Hajek was the player that "sealed the deal?" Are you f***ing joking?

Namestikov for Miller is a bit of a wash. Both guys have shown their talent, both guys drive you nuts. Same approx. age. Same draft class.

I really think the key is Howden. Some of you really have no idea what kind of player he is, because if you've seen him for the last two years you'd see a game that looks to translate well to the NHL and progress that is nothing to sneeze at.

Re: Hajek, this is the heavy swing you guys always talk about. He is boom/bust type, but the boom is a pretty significant. Size, an edge, mobility and can move the puck. A lot of raw pieces, but there's intrigue there.

Am I the only one here who thinks most people expected trade value of the McDonagh from the pre-Captain season? And not the guy who's never reached that level of play since?

I don't hate this trade, but I honestly think J.T. Miller was uncalled for.

it's a fine deal

Any trade with McDonagh needed to be an absolute home run for me to be okay with it. This is not that deal

Throw in that Miller was included and it knocks it down a peg

Gorton shouldve demanded that it was conditional on reaching the Conference finals, like it was for when the Rangers traded for St. Louis. He broke on that one.

Not to pick on some posters. But some of the people insisting certain things probably couldn't have picked out a fact about Howden or Hajek out of a multiple choice question upon 2 hours ago.

Just something to consider.

I think I'd like this more if the condition on the 2nd pick wasn't winning the cup, would have preferred to get that down to simply making the SCF

Namestikov is the piece I don't like about this trade. He's got one more point than Miller playing with Stamkos and Kucherov. I feel like when he's here playing with lesser players, he's going to be a dud.

after taking a second to breathe this is what i have:

if hajek or howden hit their ceilings its a good trade, if tampa wins the cup in the next two years its a good trade
if hajek and howden do NOT hit their ceilings its going to hard to swallow

Agree with this. Should have had that stipulation.

Does Hajek/Howden have a chance at cracking the roster next year?

But the Rangers now have significant depth down the middle which is monumental to having success.

Zibanejad
Hayes
Howden
Andersson
Chytil

We gave away a winger with 40 points on the season playing on the Rangers for an older winger with 44 points skating on the best line in all of hockey.

Well done Gorton you f***ing choker.

For what I read we have a bunch of potential 2C. Yay
