Alright this is unpopular, but it's not a horrible trade IMO. It's not awesome, but not horrible. The initial reactions are two fold IMO - no Serg or Point, which was never going to happen IMO; and also the inclusion of Miller coming out of left field.
Howden is a very good (not great) prospect who looks like he's got top 6 C upside. If he turns into Stepan, that would be great.
Seems like mixed feelings on Hajek, but from the sounds of it he was the guy the Rangers really wanted. I have no choice but to trust their opinions on him, seeing as most people like Foote more. Especially considering he's a RHD. With that said, I think he's really the key to whether or not this is a good trade for us. I've read he can develop into a top-pair shut down D, and I've also read he's nothing special. I don't know enough about him to comment either way, but I do know that he's likely the key.
Hopefully we use the first to either move up in the draft or we nail the selection similar to Chytil last year. We'll see whether we get an additional 1st or 2nd too, but either way it's another top 60 draft pick, at worst. Fine with both of those.
I would honestly have been fine with a package of Howden, Hajek, 1st, and 2nd (no conditions) for McD. That seemed close to what was realistically expected all along. Subbing Hajek for Foote maybe would have been more ideal, but it is what it is.
The head scratcher is Namestnikov for JT. Granted, I don't know much about Namestnikov's game, so I'll reserve my judgement until I see him play. Both he and JT are RFA's after the season, and maybe JT's contract ask was a little too crazy for what the Rangers wanted to give him? I'm not sure...I've always loved JT and I think he'll thrive in TB. That one could hurt us...
