I do find it a bit odd Atkins seems to have no clue whether Merrifield will get vaccinated or not. Wouldn't you try to find that out before making a trade? It is possible he has done that and believes he will already, but seems a bit strange.
I assume they don't want to/can't reveal it publicly. Teams still can't say who is and isn't vaxxed... we only know because they get put on the restricted list when their teams come to Toronto.

So we traded for Whit who can't play at home? He's getting vaxxed, right?

...right?
Hopefully. Jays play a lot of road games in August so it may not affect them as much in the next week or so but we need this guy to get the jab otherwise that would be a major problem

Then you don't know what horrendous means.
Consider how much better the Yankees and Astros got. Yes. It was horrendous.

You can't possibly look at the Jays team right now and then look at the Yankees and Astros and tell me that the Jays are contenders. No way

Merrifield was probably brought in due to his flexibility and because Espinal has been struggling for a while now. He can help spell espy and some of the other regulars who might be hitting a wall. His speed on the bases will be a nice bonus come October when taking an extra bag becomes very important in low scoring games. it's a Low risk trade with medium return potential.

Jays new top 10 according to MLB.com

1. Gabriel Moreno
2. Orelvis Martinez
3. Ricky Tiedemann
4. Otto Lopez
5. Leo Jimenez
6. Sem Robberse
7. Gabriel Martinez
8. Alex De Jesus
9. CJ Van Eyk
10. Manuel Beltre

Good to see the new top 30 entries in Gabriel Martinez and Alex De Jesus already in the top 10 replacing Groshans and Frasso. De Jesus came from the Dodgers deal of Frasso and Brito for White and De Jesus.

I don’t believe Castillo was in the top 30 but I know Taylor was. I think Morris was added for Taylor, could be wrong.

This looks more like a re-ordering of the old list based on moves made. I don't think Frasso was even in the old list but I can't find it anywhere. Morris was in there somewhere. Not originally but get put as 30 when someone else graduated. Castillo may have been but I can't recall.

Really surprised De Jesus is listed 8th. I like him and think him/Frasso could be breakeven in that deal. They really need to do an update though. Some of them are obviously outdated but now traded guys are updated, and drafted guys aren't in there. I know it takes time, but I wish they did a re-order with drafted guys, and moving around everyone to where they should be before the deadline so the update could come in all at once.

For what it's worth(probably not much because the old Dodgers ranking would have been outdated) Frasso slots in at 26 for them which is lower than where De Jesus was.

I don't think there were red flags with Martin really. He was seen as a cant-miss top 3 pick. The only question was which position he'd play in the pros. The other 3, I agree. Between age, injury etc with the others.
Martin had issues. Lack of power, some questions about his defense and arm strength too.

Hoglund was their most recent 1st round pick who hadn’t even had a chance to pitch a single inning for them.
Injury concerns.

Who should the Jays have traded for that would have made them better then the Astros and Yankees on paper?
Obviously there wasn’t a single individual player that they could have gotten to make them better then them. I would have loved to have seen them get at least 1 of, preferably 2 of Hader/Montas/Robertson/Iglesias.

They wouldn’t have been better than the Yankees or Astros but they certainly would have been much closer then they are ATM.

A lot of scouting reports, IIRC, had him having decent power projection(20 hr) and he'd be a high contact, gap hitter. Projected to be a top 3 or 4 in most lineups. Had good speed, could defend multiple positions etc. He was a nice prospect coming out of college, projected in the top 2 or 3 picks all season. Trading him is sure looking like a brilliant move at this point.

By the time he was traded the red flags were becoming more apparent. He was definitely someone they were “OK” giving up.

I mean Bass has been better this season then all 3 relievers you listed. They are more comparable to Pop who was our 2nd addition to the pen. Just because the name isn't sexy doesn't mean they won't be effective. Same thing is happening with White and Thor. Most people had no idea who the f*** Mitch White was before the second we traded for him....but everyone was amped up on trading for Thor when White has been comparable, is cheaper and has team control for a number of years.

On August 1st;
2022 Jays: 28.1
fWAR (102 games) 57-45

2021 Jays:
24.8 fWAR (102 games) 54-48

2016 Jays: 27 fWAR (106 games) 59-47

2015 Jays: 28.5 fWAR (105 games) 53-52

5.5 games better than the 2015 and right with them in terms of WAR.

Added (age) - fWAR;
Bass (34): 1.4 - 0.5+1 years of control ($1M guaranteed)
Pop (25): 0.3 - 4.5 years of control
Merrifield (33): 0.6 - 1.5+1 years of control ($7.25M guaranteed)
White (27): 0.7 - 5.5 years of control
Total: 3.0 WAR
12+2 years of control
29.75 average age
$8.25M Guaranteed

Likely Replacing (age) - fWAR;

Beasley: -0.2
Banda: 0.0
Thornton: -0.1
Zimmer: -0.3
Total: -0.6 WAR

Just added close to 4 WAR if you include additions and subtractions.

Oh and the guys people wanted who got moved;

Player (age) - fWAR;
Syndergaard (29): 1.2 - 0.5 years of control
Iglesias (32): 0.6 - 3.5 years of control ($48M guaranteed)
Fulmer (29): 0.8 - 0.5 years of control
Gallo (28): 0.3 - 0.5 years of control
Total: 2.9 WAR
5
years of control
29.5 average age
$48M Guaranteed

Not much different than what we added. The players we got cost less, have more control and less contractual obligations and are younger in some cases.
