Jays weren't able to do nearly enough while other teams got a lot stronger. The prices were too high though so I don't blame the Jays for not wanting to match what was being given. A lot of teams gave away top end young talent with years of team financial control for what seems like an all or nothing attempt this year. Too high in my book. Kind of disappointed though. I don't think the Jays did enough to compete with the teams they're likely going to need to go through. We'll see.

Oh I don't disagree with your statement at all. In fact you/morgs/et all have probably the best takes.

This was much more so in response to guys who are just shitting on people feeling "whelmed" lol. Like the white knighting is kinda whack.

All i'm saying is, this wasn't the perfect deadline, and I think you'd agree to say this was an average to above average ish TDL - which does leave room for criticism for a team that has world series aspirations imo.

yooo PM me your roster lol. I'm addicted to it.
Cool, that all makes sense to me.

I always struggled with who to target for position players because even a guy like Happ would be a borderline starter on a healthy Jays playoff team; he's similar to the three OF they have now and the best alignment probably involves Kirk at DH and Jansen at catcher. That need was always a distant third for me, so I can't complain too much when I really like how they addressed their biggest need (bullpen) and I don't mind what they did for their second biggest need (starting depth).

I would probably grade it a B deadline, which isn't ideal but is good enough given how good the team already was.

I'm good with the deadline. I wish we were more involved in Soto, but the prices of anyone else that was a major needle mover was insane.

We improved the bullpen a bunch with control, got an interesting prospect and although I liked Taylor a lot, Frasso is the only guy I'm remotely sad about losing and meh. Seems the Jays love the idea of Whit being an everyday player, and he's kind of a mix of Tapia/Zimmer.

Jays were cautious at the deadline for sure BUT saying that one thing that really surprised me was we didn’t get a lefty bat? That’s surprising.

Jays mash right handed pitching. I don't think there were a ton of left handed bats out there that would make a difference (other than Soto)

lmfao at the guys coming in like oh toronto sports fans are going to be toronto sports fans and why everyone is upset and if its for the "usual" reasons as if they're some mature, level-headed more knowledgeable fans. The white knighting is ridiculous.

People are allowed to be dissatisfied with the deadline. Like this isn't some home run TDL that we just witnessed from this FO. It was very questionable and we'll see if it pans out. But they didn't get an impact starter, or a bat and while they got bullpen help, they've had all year to address that and they just did with decent but nothing special arms. So ofc people are going to be underwhelmed. Tf?
Not with the most of the usual crowd here. Dissenting opinion is frowned upon, pedantically

White is better than Kikuchi by a mile so they definitely upgraded their rotation (gotta remember, the market was thin this year). They don't need a bat, they already have one of the best offences in the league (Merrifield kicks Zimmer out so that should be a good thing). Bass and Pop are definitely solid arms with Bass being exactly what the Jays needed as he has the lowest ERA among any pen arm that got dealt (these two give the Jays what they've been missing all year which is bullpen depth)

Of course it would've been nice to get Soto or Montas or even Thor but to say this deadline was a complete failure is nonsense. Also, if they traded for Montas and gave up some top prospects, people would complain here as well lol

The Jays lead the league in average vs RHP. For such a right handed heavy lineup, you wouldn't expect that. A lefty bat really wasn't a huge need.

Yeah this is my biggest concern. The Yankees got Montas, the Mariners got Castillo, Astros got Mancini and Vasquez, and Twins got a bunch of dudes as well. Only Tampa did worse this deadline than the Jays among all the teams in a playoff position right now.

Regardless though, I still view the Jays as the third best team in AL behind Astros and Yankees and I don't think the gap is all that big (Dodgers were better on paper than Atlanta last year and look what happened)

There was no trade other than maybe Soto that would have made us a better team than the Yankees or Astros. But the best team in regular season does not win the world series the majority of the time. Need to get hot at the right time and have depth, which I think is possible.

The heavy lifting needs to be done in the offseason when all you need to do is spend money or pay more reasonable trade prices. If you plan to make major upgrades at the deadline then you will deplete your farm with no guarantees of winning and pay crazy high acquisition costs.

And our farm system while rather deep lacks a ton of elite players. I really love Moreno and Tiedemann. I have high hopes for both Toman and Barriera. I like both Martinez and if Orelvis can cut down the swing and miss he has legit major league power already.

Our farm I think after that is a lot of solid players with potential but none with massive ceilings, so I think we need to do more work in the offseason instead of at the deadline.

This time next year if some of the prospects outside of the top 3 pop and have great years, you can likely make another Berrios type deal if necessary.

I do find it a bit odd Atkins seems to have no clue whether Merrifield will get vaccinated or not. Wouldn't you try to find that out before making a trade? It is possible he has done that and believes he will already, but seems a bit strange.

Jays new top 10 according to MLB.com

1. Gabriel Moreno
2. Orelvis Martinez
3. Ricky Tiedemann
4. Otto Lopez
5. Leo Jimenez
6. Sem Robberse
7. Gabriel Martinez
8. Alex De Jesus
9. CJ Van Eyk
10. Manuel Beltre

Good to see the new top 30 entries in Gabriel Martinez and Alex De Jesus already in the top 10 replacing Groshans and Frasso. De Jesus came from the Dodgers deal of Frasso and Brito for White and De Jesus.

I don’t believe Castillo was in the top 30 but I know Taylor was. I think Morris was added for Taylor, could be wrong.

Another thing to take note of, this is not the NBA where the team with most talent wins most of the time. The 88-win Braves beat the 106-win Dodgers in the NLCS last year and the Nationals had to get through the WC game in 2019 as well where they upset the Dodgers and Astros who seemed like the better teams all year
