My kids are gonna love it. Thought it was going to be more like the Sonic movies but I guess since how bad the 90's live action went they decided to keep it animated.
Damn, that would be really disappointing. They could have made a nice set of movies if this did well.Review embargo still going on despite the movie dropping tomorrow
Me thinks they're about to be crushed
some of the reviews trickling in are NOT positive
Figures. All good I am bring my niece to see the Dungeons & Dragons movie Friday and that got a lot better reviews than I thought it would. Even some critics that often don't like this kind of movie liked it like the guy for CBC here in Canada. Actually 91% critics and 94% audience on rotten tomatoes for D&D so go see that people!Review embargo still going on despite the movie dropping tomorrow

52 on Metacritic with 22 reviews
From looking at that, it sounds like the animation is amazing but the rest...not so much.
I'm starting to suspect why they went with Chris Pratt, even though he sounds nothing like Mario. That and all of those 20th century pop and rock tunes that the author thought worked against the film make me think that they were going for an animated Guardians of the Galaxy. It's disappointing that it sounds like a misguided attempt to follow a trend rather than make something unique and special with the license.
It’s a movie made with an elementary-school level of story, character, theme, and humor because that’s what Illumination does.
This is, admittedly, what much of the audience who goes to see it, and their families, will be looking for.
You just would’ve hoped, with a legacy property that’s so beloved by so many, the team behind it, which includes directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic plus writer Matthew Fogel, would’ve aspired to more. A balance, perhaps, between childlike wonder and emotional resonance.
All that matters is if parents bring their kids and it makes hundreds of millions of dollars.
Listen to this crap from the article:
It's funny that these ding dongs don't get that it's a movie for kids and fans of the series, but also has to introduce people who aren't familiar with the series (shocking as that is) and thus limits its overall potential and capacity. Anyone expecting a large emotional experience needs to have their head examined. All that matters is if parents bring their kids and it makes hundreds of millions of dollars.

Yeah I get it, Federico Fellini would not be impressed.

I've seen reviews from fans of Mario as a whole and they were pretty pleased with what they saw.
