while i agree in theory...you cna't just give up on those games...we eek out a point against either of those teams, its goes a long way to confidence...

Not so sure about that. There has been a noticeable drop-off (to me at least) when we have tried to run him in those 3 in 4 night stretches.

There are a couple of games I might run McBackup over the next 3 weeks. Maybe Montreal this week, maybe the next Carolina game. Perhaps sacrifice him to Chicago on the 4th. If there is nothing on the line then the Florida game to end to the season would work. We'll probably get McBackup in a game or two during that last 4 games.

During the playoffs; the workload is fine for Bob.

These are good points. I do think Bob will get a couple of nights off and hopefully the Jackets will have a spot locked up around 4/6 and he can sit a couple more nights, but it the Jackets are fighting for ever point to get in he'll have to start just about every game.

I'm of the opinion that given what happened last year, every point counts. The staff will monitor the season and performance of the team and Bob and decide when to play Curtis. I don't "throw in the towel" on any game. My hope is they can get to a point where we only have to play Bob in two and the last 4 games so they split the B2B series to end the year.

Let's put the best team on the ice until further notice. If we're going to start the backup why not put him in a game against a team that may not be playing at a higher level. Don't concede a game but maybe he plays against a lesser team (on paper) and we still secure points.

I'd feel more comfortable with 19-20 (who wouldn't?) I don't want to get in as a wild card- I want the 2-3 seed spot. 17 could do it but I am wary.

Elias sports bureau confirms it today. One of the toughest finishing schedules. Last team to play 8 games in 12 days the '79-80 Nordiques.

The schedule is not favorable but 8 wins in the last 15 gets likely gets it done and they are capable of that. Having the pressure of each game meaning so much is what the playoffs are all about...I'm loving what this opportunity potentially means for the development of this team... this is how great teams develop. I'm hoping we watch and enjoy the results....

Excellent point! If the Jackets fail to make the playoffs, we'll all be terribly disappointed; but the experience gained, even from failing, can still have significant benefit for a young, building organization. Learning to win is part of the journey.

8-5-1 is doable.

The next two games are huge.
This next week and some change is huge, specifically the games vs Philly, Detroit, and of course the Rangers. Those should be our 'Stanley Cup finals" games.

Agreed. And it can only make the vets who were here last year hungrier.

I get the positive spin; but at the end of the day as a fan I don't want to be on the outside by 1 or 2 points. Guess I see it as a tough grind with a compressed schedule where McBackup will need to stand tall and we will need to get an unexpected win against Pburg, Colorado or Chicago. I think you're rolling the dice big time unless you go 9-5 from here. Maybe 8-5-1; but 8-6 isn't going to get it done. We'll get a good read starting tomorrow.

Sounds like Robert E. Lee speaking to his troops after Pickett's Charge...

Come on Pete, 13 years of losing has no excuse, the Jackets must make the playoffs this year.. period!

While it would be nice, I would rather miss the playoffs and carry the burn into next year if it means we can make and do damage in next years playoffs.

Why would it mean that?

Another year of missing increases the hunger and desire, especially in guys like Dubinsky, Anisimov, Johnson, Horton, etc. They aren't used to missing the playoffs regularly, and it would be 2 seasons in a row for some of them (even longer for some.) That would increase desperation going into next year from the group, add in the young guys growing even more, and some even in Springfield pushing the vets to keep their spots, I think we could be very very good next year.

If Bob is on top of his game, there's no reason this club can't make the playoffs AND do some damage THIS year.

The challenge will be this: with that schedule, they have a built-in excuse to fail. Will they allow failure or be stubborn enough to refuse to lose?

Another thought, even with the cap going up, we don't know if Columbus will spend up to the cap. Get into the playoffs and earn some playoff revenue(deep playoff run will especially help) and maybe McConnell is willing to spend up to the cap again. Even if we lose in the first round, maybe a sniff of playoff hockey might be enough for McConnell to spend up to the cap.

Also, a playoff berth this year would be great for the players without playoff experience. They play in the playoffs for the first time. They love it, they will be hungry next year because they want to get back in it.

I don't think it actually works that way. I'm sure you aren't saying that making the playoffs this year means the burn to make them next year won't be there. But I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make except it's a good thing if we miss this year if it means we won't next year.

After the charge, Lee accepted blame for the failure and asked Pickett to prepare his division to repulse a counter attack. Pickett replied that he no longer had a division. How in hell is that like learning what it takes to win hockey games and advance to the playoffs?

Yeah, anything other than the playoffs would be a complete disaster, to be honest. They're IN playoff position with 12-13 games to go and are either healthier/better (or both) than teams around them like Toronto, Detroit and Washington. If they don't make it, they've choked (like more losses to teams such as Carolina, perhaps). That's unacceptable.

I'm normally all about the "learning" and the "growing" and the "value of the experience" and what-have-you, but I believe we might have been thinking/saying the same thing at this point last year as well.

Nothing assures that the team will be prepared to "do damage in next year's playoffs." It's likely that the Jackets will benefit in the long run from competing late into the season, but at some point you've got to get rewarded. That time damn well better be this season.

Unquestionably, the playoffs are there for the taking and it would be an incredible let down if we miss again. We have games in hand on NYR and TOR. We have key 4 point games against Metro teams. Although the 8 games in 12 days is going to be a grind, PHI does have a tough schedule down the stretch and it is unlikely they keep their current winning pace up (Mase is their goalie after all:sarcasm:). I believe the team will grow no matter the outcome. I am thrilled to be playing meaningful games heading into April. However, a playoff birth, the team's 1st ever playoff win, and hopefully, series win would represent huge steps up for the organization and recognition of Columbus as a legitimate hockey town. Exciting times...pumped for MTL and NYR in the next 48 hours!
