This is an absolutely insane statement..
Yeah, it's f***ed up on a whole multitude of levels.

Also I feel like we all should have seen this one coming after Will Butler suddenly left the band and the Arcade Fire got really into Crypto/NFTs all of a sudden.

I mean, let's be honest. How many artists are asking their fans for nude videos?

I think it's just "wrong" because Win Butler looks like a creep.

I hate the Arcade Fire too. Funeral was cool, but everything else has been horrid.

Tons probably. But a lot of them also aren't marketing themselves as these pillars of the community like Win has been for decades.

I call it "The Cosby Effect".

Also, man I got all sorts of weird Duggar family vibes from those PR statements Win and Régine posted. It's not fair, I'll admit, but man, something seems really weird and off about their reactions to this.

I don't really follow them so I didn't realize they were like that.

Is requesting nude videos from girls not something pillars of the community can do? I dunno.
It's kind of creepy and weird if you're like 40 and they're 18, but hey, that's fine if everyone agrees to it. If they don't well, that's f***ed up. If it's a situation where you're getting burned because you're cheating on your wife with an 18 year old who suddenly doesn't like what you're doing, then you dumb and you should take what's coming to you. None of this is illegal, incidentally, although pressuring or forcing yourself on someone should be and is punishable by law. I do think it's really sus to rely on your public standing to silence and intimidate and manipulate the people you had an affair with because you don't want it to get out, though. If Win had been more public about it, I'd buy the "I was in a dark place" defense a whole lot more.

But I think the more public figures posture themselves around being a voice of moral authority, the more skeptical I am of their actual virtue and the less shocked I am when this shit comes out. I'm actually more shocked about the Neurosis thing to be honest, and not just because the allegations he cops to are so heinous.

I've just seen a lot of comments about how like anyone that is 20 having a relationship with a 35 year old is "grooming" or inappropriate and it seems like a really weird take to me.

I don't really have a ball in this fight and overall Win Butler seems like a creep and shitty person, but I also think a lot about how musicians in general are in a mentally awkward spot given how their careers work and use fan hook ups and adoration as a way to cope so if you are being contacted by an artist and they want to have a "relationship" with you out of the blue like.. obviously their intention is probably sinister.

I just hate how like this situation is rolled into something like R Kelly by the reddit and twitter police because they are both shitty, but like.. Win's situation just seems like "oh he's not a committed husband and partner"(which is common place in every industry) where as R Kelly or Neurosis is like "oh this is an evil person using their position of power to physically, psychologically, and sexually abuse people".

Yeah, I don't think he's grooming per se, though there are obviously some really high profile cases of that happening (including one that's on trial right now). But you and I have both been in parts of the biz, so I think we're coming from the same place. Personally, I don't think I want to spend time with an 18 year old because it just makes me feel old and sad. But yeah, making music, performing, recording, touring, and even trying to go back to a normal life after the show ends is really really REALLY difficult. Very few musicians manage it.

I will say, there are definitely musicians who did/do something similar but with more consent and everyone ends up pretty happy. And we don't hear about those for a reason.

Yeah, I don't really get the young fetishizing thing, but if I was on the road 200 days a year and I wanted to get laid and a 20 year old is telling me how great she thinks I am I think it seems pretty obvious what my intentions are going to be..

It's like.. these are sophomores in college and they don't understand what is going on?

I dunno, seems like a whole "I met my idol and did what I needed to to get close to them and now I regret it ". Not to mention how many relationships do you have with not famous people that completely f*** you up.

But that's partially the backlash to Win marketing himself as The Righteous Dude for two decades. I don't think his case is nearly comparable with the R. Kelly or Ian Watkins horrorshows, or even Ryan Adams' shittiness.

But he's still been shitty, and used his clout and his power to f*** up people's lives and wasn't really forthcoming about it and the non-apology isn't going to do anything except piss everyone off.

Yeah, like Ryan Adams is definitely a good example of "legal" but totally and absolutely wrong and manipulative behavior that is not normal.

I think the bigger thing is that these aren't like tour situations-- this is a dude inviting people to his bar/restaurant and holding his position as a big name over their heads, implicitly or not. That's what seems to be the unifying characteristic behind these visceral reactions to these. And man, when it's someone you know in your city, swimming in your pond, I definitely get how it reads different.

To contrast this, look at how the allegations against Ian Svenonious played out last year-- he gets accused, he says "hey, I was a dick, I'm sorry, I didn't know I caused that reaction", issues a real apology, and it's pretty much back to normal.

Yeah, like Ryan Adams is definitely a good example of "legal" but totally and absolutely wrong and manipulative behavior that is not normal.
Oh absolutely. Especially because he torpedoed or tried to torpedo people's careers over it.

Also, man, if don't want to deal with emotional fallout, don't f*** 19 year olds.
