Watching yesterdays game one of the thing that stands out to me a bit that is a "downside" for a winger is that they often just don't touch the puck as much as a center does. Kakko really has to rely on his teammates to move the puck to him and as a winger seemed to have the assignment of curl out of the zone and head up ice and may or may not get the puck, and wasn't really relied upon to be the guy to move it up the ice, while I think you'll see Hughes be relied upon to be that puck carrier and get more puck touches because of his position and transition ability.
Sometimes you can at least partially shut down a winger by shutting down his linemates depending on how the team uses its wingers

he's going first because he is expected to be the better player. maybe he won't be but thats why he is going #1

We don't know that for sure. He could also be going first because NJ kind of locked him already and because of that and the hype the previous year caused they feel choosing Hughes would be a safer choice to protect their **ses.

I'm sure that even if they felt Kakko was maybe just a slightly better prospect they'd still choose Hughes. I'm not saying choosing him would be bad or wrong, but sometimes things are not quite that simple.

Hughes is going first because he is deemed to be the best player. If it was something as simple as him being a center, Seguin would have been drafted ahead of Hall.
As he should have. But that also proves the best player doesn't always end up getting drafted first ;)

Again, revisionist history. At the time, it was almost a consensus that Hall was the better pick.

While I agree that the better player doesn't always end up getting drafted first, you have to look at now. At right now, Hughes is the better pick. The same way that Hall was the better pick at the time.

I can agree with that.

But in the end I still think Kakko ends up almost identical, or better than Hughes. Just my gut feeling by watching his tools and size. Hughes will be a fantastic player as well.

I really love that everyone is trying to show how awesome Hughes is or how awesome Kakko is. It just shows me how amazing and fantastic it is to have the opportunity to draft either one, IDGAF which anymore and the Rangers brass probably feels the same way.

Nah, it depends. Kane played 25 min for US and had the puck everytime he was on the ice...

On the last 2 games 3rd periods it has felt like every time Kakko has stepped into the ice he has created something, he's going to be a nightmare to play against when he has the puck.
& he wants to have the puck.

For the 1st games of the tourney he just always seemed to do something with the puck.

Watching him this year he for sure seems like a winger who can drive the play.

Eh this isn't always true. There are a bunch of wingers who handle the puck a ton. Like someone else mentioned, Kane seems like he always has the puck on his stick. Hughes is a more natural puck carrier than Kakko, that will be the case no matter where he plays, it's one of his greatest strengths.

That said, its alot easier to carry the puck and make plays when you have actual talent out there with you. Finland has been heavily out matched in that regard. Kakko's done a pretty damn good job despite that.

He's going 1st because he's a center and centers are more valuable.

That is a totally ridiculous argument.

When you're picking 1st, you're picking who you believe will be the best. If you're picking a player because he's a center, you shouldn't be deciding what kind of coffee to buy, let alone an NHL player.

In the end nobody here has a crystal ball. YOU have NO idea who will end up being the better player. Neither do I, so why so offended if someone has a different opinion? The posters here who resort to the name calling and putting down others opinions when both players are so neck and neck are the ones who deserve a head shake.

It's not about who will be the better player. None of us knows for sure.

However, saying that Hughes will be selected first because he's a center is outright ridiculous. A GM who appraised Kaako as better than Hughes and then selected Hughes would be a stone-cold idiot.

No it's not the ONLY thing. But if you think it's not factored into the decision then i don't know what to do tell you. All the scouts have said it as well. Center is a more valuable position.

Went to go follow Kakko on IQ and Zibanejad liked his most recent pic but doesnt follow him which I found weird. At least he isn’t liking Hughes’ pictures

So far, we have Buch and Zib as the pro-Kakko guys
