Best worst case scenario we get Hughes, he’s too light to play this year, we stuck enough for another high pick next year and add them and Hughes the following fall.

hughes will be in the nhl next year...how good he is as a rookie is unknown but i think there is little chance he isn't in the nhl

If we draft Podkolzin I'm gonna do what the Mom from Hereditary did in the last scene.

I'm going Mad Queen on NYC if that happens.

If we get Hughes I'm going to throw a party and buy his jersey.

Probably same for Kakko.

If this happens we're organizing a meetup outside MSG and we egg the damn place

It's not even a plausible possibility (never was). Pod's stock has dropped significantly.

I will never understand how this fear even started. Lol
It’s because the rangers never go consensus and we’ve also never drafted this high so we don’t know how they do in situations like this. Also we’re trained from experience to never be optimistic and prepare for the worst. Even if it makes no sense I’m not unclenching until the draft actually happens

You really should relax man, you're going to make yourself crazy by thinking illogically. Also, none of the first round selections last year were off the board, per se.

The Rangers have gone off the board a number of times, and tend to have eccentric player ratings that dont always line up perfectly with the NHL ranks.

That said, I'm less concerned in a draft with a clear top two. Were this the 2017 draft I'd not be sure who we wanted.

I should note this discussion seems similar to what happened in 2013 with Mackinnon and Barkov. Barkov had the far superior world juniors playing a bigger role on a weaker Finnish team, and put up great numbers in the Finnish league. He still went second.

*It also took both of them long enough to reach their potential that NYR fans would be calling them busts.

We just had our AGM confirm we're taking one of them, and had Gorton hint as such, and Bob confirm as such weeks ago. Any fear is purely irrational and illogical at this point.

Yeah, it’s not even close. I was one who had some concerns about Kakko early and I am not low on Podkolzin — but Kakko is just blowing forward in his development. Like he has more dominant shifts now than he had against Sweden in the WJC. And he is also — at least for us who haven’t seen him on a nightly basis — just how darn skilled he is technically. Like when he tried to put it off the back of the head of the goalie, how he scopes the puck up so extremely easily. He is just something else and I think that he has closed the gap on Hughes, and if anyone is claiming that he is ahead, it’s hard to argue against it.

Podkolzin on his side struggled with the pressure at the U18s. It’s not the biggest of deals, but we have a total two player draft from now on.

Barkov had like 24 points his rookie year. We'd be freaking out

Agreed. I was initially concerned in the days right after the lottery but by now it’s very clear it’s nothing to worry about
