But I think you can make a favorable argument for whoever goes second in this draft.

An underrated aspect of this whole saga. This really is an ideal situation for the Rangers. Love every second of it. To think that we went from arguing about Turcotte or Zegras to a situation in which Hughes would now be the “consolation” prize. It’s amazing.

I said it toward the beginning of this rebuild, but starting with last year through this year’s and next year’s drafts, they picked maybe the perfect time to tank

The irony is that they didn't tank hard enough for many people, yet moved up in the lottery because of their final position. We finally got lucky.

the teams that picked 3, 4 and 5 that year did pretty well...with the 2nd pick you just need to have a scouting staff that knows what they are doing instead of just going with the consensus so you don't have to explain it to your fans

You make the moves to leverage existing assets into futures, play more kids, and let the chips fall where they may, hopefully with the kids playing hard and fighting to win. Then you hope for good odds in the lottery and do your best to draft well.

“Tanking” is doing all you can to lose just to get one marginally better draft pick— and generally a terrible idea, made significantly worse in the age of the lottery.
