They were, but Cherepanov’s death probably scared them away for a while

Not just the Rangers. Look at the 2010 draft. Even St Louis passed on Tarasenko before picking him with their 2nd selection. Kuznetsov dropped even further.

The Cherepanov incident caused a ripple effect that changed the thought process on Russian players for a few years.

It was a freak thing and scouts over the last 3 decades have used some sort of excuse to drop Russian prospects. It's kind of a weird thing. I think Russia is the only country where that tends to happen so often.

Wait until China starts producing players in 30 years.

Jessiman, McIlWRATH, Cherepanov....shits so good now we can (almost) finally talk about the terrible draft times again without ripping each other's heads off

Yeah I think the feeling of “we don’t have any control over the players development and the KHL doctors dropped the ball on this situation” did scare some teams but it became a more general “we don’t have control” issue

Russophobia is a thing

Russophobia is a thing

I don’t think it’s as much xenophobia as it is the lack of a transfer agreement and the distinct possibility that some of these guys may never come over or come over way later because the pay is better there for entry level players.

I also think it’s sometimes harder to scout Russian prospects because they purposely hide their young players in bottom-6 roles. I mean even prospects like Ovechkin and Datsyuk didn’t get much ice time until a little later on. Kravtsov and Tarasenko are two players that I’ve seen in recent memory that have gone against that, but it’s pretty rare to see a young player play big minutes for the team.

I dont' think they purposefully hide them, everyone gets to see their top prospect at the international tournaments anyways. It seems to be more that it's more common to lean heavily on vets and make younger players "earn it" than we have come to expect

It just pisses me off chara should be a f***ing corpse yet he continued to play and excel while mcilrath never got it together. It's not like no one can play D if they're bigger than 6'4.

But mcilrath busted. Idk if he just didnt put the work in to improve his skating or the mental side of his game or if he did permanent damage to his legs that couldn't be overcome. Bullshit either way

Any body language experts able to tell if he has any different mannerisms mentioning Jack Hughes & Kaapo Kakko? He said Hughes very loosely and seemed a bit more tense when mentioning Kakko, seemed he was nervous about saying his full name like he did for Hughes and said his last name instead because he’s not able to enunciate as well when nervous. Common tactic of a liar. Also he adds on to the sentence, randomly throwing out there “for team Finland” which is something liars often to adding unnecessary details after a sentence already finished.

Jack Hughes is a Ranger confirmed

Nope. Chad Kakko will be a Ranger. Devils take the virgin Hughes.

To me Russian hockey is a bit weird in some ways though. For instance the number of Russian players who die young is absolutely nuts. Dmitri Nabokov just a few days ago--was a 1st rounder somewhere around 1995. There are murders, suicides, car crashes, drug deaths, planes crashing, alcoholic related deaths, boat or water accidents, heart attacks and cancer, mafia related incidents, disappearances and things like happened to Cherepanov. I don't think there is any way of explaining it.

I agree to an extent. Making them earn it is one thing, but denying minutes to players who have excelled in RSL/KHL at young ages has happened in the past. I’m not saying that’s the norm, as in the end, the team’s care more about winning than anything else, but it has happened.

I also think another part of it is that the majority of scouting staffs are based in North America and usually only have one scout per region scouting these games, so it’s harder to get more eyes overseas watching constantly than it is to have eyes watching in North America.

I may be wrong, but I feel like when I hear about scouting staffs, I feel like teams have more NA scouts than they do in places like Russia.

It’s funny. Fowler was one of those kids that some observers loved and I just didn’t see it.

I thought he was talented, but the sum didn’t equal the parts. I also thought he was soft and lacked an aptitude to play defense.
I know we're all brilliant after the fact but I was fine with the McIlrath selection and still am. They swung for the fences because they thought they could develop him into Chris Pronger (no really that was the rumbling afterwards). They missed -- these things happen when you swing for the fences. That's why its swinging for the fences and not a sure thing.

Everyone forgetting now Tarasenko wasn't coming over, Fowler was butter soft (still is), Gormley was always just a guy (still is). Rangers had Sanguinetti putting up b2b 40 points years in HFD, had just had Del Zotto finish with 37 points as a rookie, Staal had untapped offensive potential he was getting into and 25 y/o Danny Girardi was actually a really good passer (I know!). AND the whole Carcillo thing, it's not like it was unreasonable. Where was Fowler even gonna play?

Process, not results. And the process was ~fine, if overly ambitious. Unpopular opinion, I know.

Bob McKenzie on the Bob Cast:

"Is there a chance the Devils take Kakko over Hughes?"

"My answer to that would be: no, I don't believe so. I believe the Devils will take Hughes and Kakko will be there at number 2."

"Is there a chance that Jeff Gorton, who has made a habit of going off the board in some drafts, is it possible he takes someone other than Kakko/Hughes?"

"And my answer to that is no, I don't believe the Rangers would go off the board at number 2."

This formatting was very suspenseful, thanks.

NOW, we can finally get those last worriers to relax. The Bobfather has spoken.
