I think the Rangers desire a top end puck rushing D man, something we do not have with our prospects. If we were to go "off the board" or "trade down" I'd think it would be for a D-Man of that mold(Bowen Byram) but talent level between Kakko and Byram is too great.. If we stood at our previous position, that is where we would be going.

I'd prepare myself for a possibility of Hughes there at #2, surprises happen at drafts. I do not think it would be a bad thing, no lose situation for us all around.

"trade the pick" chatter tangent at Shesty/Kravstov thread
led me to post this, re article about 'nucks maybe wanting to join the Hughes brothers

there was this article at Athletic, but fee required
What the Canucks would have to do to trade up for Jack...

key paragraphs
"Asking league sources to get an idea of the package required to make a team think about trading down from the top two picks, it’s clear people in the NHL have a different perspective of Hughes’ worth than many fans, especially in Vancouver.
“It would take a Lindros package,” one said
The Quebec Nordiques, of course, traded Eric Lindros — considered a generational talent — to the Philadelphia Flyers in one of the league’s biggest deals, one that laid the groundwork for a Colorado Avalanche dynasty team.
Quebec got Steve Duchesne, a big-time point-producer on the blueline, Kerry Huffman, another defenceman, Ron Hextall, Mike Ricci, the 25th-overall selection in the 1990 draft (Chris Simon), two first-round picks, $15 million and Peter Forsberg, a future superstar.
If it really would take a Lindros-like deal from the Canucks, and it does make sense because the New York Rangers have little motivation to trade out of a spot where they can add a franchise player, how the heck could the Canucks come up with something close?
This is how another NHL person put it:
“Three or four firsts. Four seconds and Vancouver takes back Marc Staal and Brendan Smith (who have a combined cap hit of roughly $10 million for the next two seasons).
“That’s a broad outline. It’s the same as trading for Elias Pettersson or Auston Matthews, really.”
That’s some outline. And there was another possible outline including both Bo Horvat and Troy Stecher.
It would be this year’s first, a 2020 unprotected first, two second-round picks, Horvat, Stecher and one more player and take back all that cap space."

We're not going off the board, at all. Even Bob confirmed it last night.

He looks huge, even against men

6th in goals in the 5th best league in the world as a 17-year old, dominating play, dictating shifts. It's crazy.

Not even Barkov was this dominant in his draft year. He was good but I don't remember opponents bouncing off Barkov the way it happens with Kakko.

I can't see how the Devils will pass up having Hischier-Hughes..

If they were both wingers, Kakko would be taken first... Center is just too valuable.

The Devils are taking Hughes. There are a ton of connections between the two and I have no doubt it will happen.

Not really, just Shero & Hall.

The reason there is "no doubt" has to do with the fact virtually every professional NHL scout claims Hughes has the better upside.

He has been labeled as the number 1 pick for years. There really is no reason to take any risks and pick Kakko. That's the biggest reason they will pick Hughes.

Valiquette said on the MSG brodcast how no GM would risk their job by not picking the consensus no 1 in that situation

I think the Devils will pick Hughes because I think they'll think he's the best player in the draft. If they think Kakko is the better player, I'm sure they'll pick him.

Valiquette's argument is bad, IMO. When watching previous NHL drafts have you been struck with the idea that these guys are slaves to the consensus? NHL GMs have egos the size of [large object].

It’ll be fun to evaluate both these kids throughout their career through the rivalry. I hate the Devils but I’ll be watching some games to watch Hughes.

I think Kakko will be the better goal scorer and all around player. But Hughes will be ‘the’ guy that does it all offensively, he has 100 point potential. I think Kakko will be a 40-40 or more type player. I would be enlightened with either one of them, and I think they have even value because imo Kakko’s physical with skill and finesse style, I can see him becoming a leader and a captain in 2-3 years, especially since we don’t have a captain right now. And to say their even meaning Hughes pure offensive game is tremendous just alone. If I’m saying that the right way lol

It’ll be fun.

The widely believed consensus #1 doesn't always go #1.

NHL Releases Final Rankings For 2017 Draft

And Vally works for MSG & the Rangers.

But if you want to pretend the Devils really want to take Kakko despite all the NHL scouts & insider experts claiming Hughes is better, simply because they're "scared" to not take the #1 consensus pick, feel free to do so. Completely illogical, but I wont dissuade you from it.

How can I dissuade you from sticking around here?

I just havent watched the hours & hours of tapes & live games that the professional scouts have, so I honestly cant predict, but I have to go with the expert opinion if they claim Hughes is better.

That said, Kakko is more mature physically at this point and has already played in a pro league, so I think he will likely win Rookie of the year.
