And the stigma attached to that pick remains with us to this day. I was convinced they were taking Tarasenko.

Tarasenko was who I wanted. He was my guy in that draft.

But if you would’ve asked me who they would taken, I thought Johansen was a definite trade up target, and I never would’ve seen them passing on Fowler when he was still on the board at 10.

Supposedly, Clark really liked him. But as we’ve seen before, sometimes there’s one guy they like just a little bit more.

On an unrelated note, is this board performing slow for anyone else today?

I guess my problem with it was that a good skating defensive defenseman is a good player, but not one you take 10th overall.

I remember also getting concerned and pumping the breaks when people started throwing out names like Weber and others.

And not surprising, someone was able to pull some kind of data that connected the two and showed similar results when accounting for some variable or another.

See? Not much has changed on here in the last decade. We just present the data in a more attractive way, with graphs and charts and abbreviations.;)

Oh god, I had completely forgotten that the Rangers took McIlrath because that one game Girardi stood idle while Carcillo beat Gaborik's face in.

Well I didn't mean to imply that it was a key factor, but it was widely speculated after the season ended that the Rangers wanted to get tougher to play against. I think that had at least something to do with it.

What the kids say these days...it wasn’t a binary choice.

Who said it was? My point is I think the organization is better off taking McIlrath than they would be if they took Fowler. Obviously they would be even better off if they took Tarasenko.

Considering Cam Fowler is pretty bad but considered good I think we ended up better off getting McIlrath being nothing than getting Fowler who is now making huge money for a long time.

It’s funny. Fowler was one of those kids that some observers loved and I just didn’t see it.

I thought he was talented, but the sum didn’t equal the parts. I also thought he was soft and lacked an aptitude to play defense.

Sometimes your internet slows down when you watch too much pornography. ;)

Kakko is the go-to player on his team and line this season. He is trusted when he wants to circle the ice with the puck on his stick and he's been great at reading where the puck is going to go. I think this spike in G/A ratio has a lot to do with him being allowed to puck handle as he wants and a growth in how he reads the game. He always seems to meet the puck in the dangerous parts of the ice.

I don't think he's a pure sniper, my read is that he's a very complete forward with a great shot who has been trusted to retain puck possession, drive the net, and create chances. Also, playing on a line with Oula Palve who's a bit of a late blooming playmaker probably had a lot to do with getting more scoring chances and having less of his passes put away.

Oula Palve was/is actually more of a scorer than a playmaker and he did net quite a few of them in the early season before being paired up with Kakko. Palve even caught the eye of some of the NHL teams and he was thought to go to the NHL before all was said and done. He chilled down from what some would consider a hot start though and I guess the teams that were scouting him kinda more or less recognized his flaws and the move never happened. He wasn't or isn't really a great playmaker even in the FEL standards and Filppula was much more highly regarded as far as puck distribution goes. Obviously Filppula slowed down towards the end, possibly hammered by some injuries or what not.

Naturally as soon as Kakko realized the "sad" fact of being more productive by doing it all himself, he transformed his game from pass first to shoot first. That panned out. Still, given better line mates - which he will get in the NHL - I'm certain he will use those line mates equally to create and to wrap things up. If anything, I find it amusing how Kakko is described or touted as "the Finnish sniper" in many of the scouting reports, when just a moment ago he was trying to set up chances rather than bury them.

Nonetheless, players like him that are capable of altering their games depending on the surroundings are the ones that carry a ton of promise & potential.

Gotta love the kid even more of he's able to adjust his game to the team's needs like that.

Everyone knew Tarasenko was on of the most talented and highest potential players in the draft but had concerns about him coming over that were pretty exaggerated

People really thought the Rangers would take him because it was felt they were fine with taking Russians. Pierre was even talking about them taking Tarasenko as the Rangers walked to the podium. Then we got the McIlrath pick

They were, but Cherepanov’s death probably scared them away for a while
