**** me if NYR chose McMichael over C. Caufield or Brink. I'm not the biggest Newhook fan, but I'd take him over McMichael!!

Also, if York falls that low, I'd hope NYR would trade up!!

No need. We get him with our pick from Dallas or Peg.

Then it looks like it’s 3 wingers... Chytil doesn’t not look like a center
Which is fine. I would much rather have players flourishing in their natural positions than try to force them where they're not comfortable. I think it's a much better option to try to get a natural, NHL caliber center with one of our other picks in the first round(s) or potentially trade for one.

Analyzing the Games Of Hughes and Kakko - MSGNetworks.com

“His one-timer from the right circle at this stage of his development is equal to that of Alex Ovechkin’s or Patrik Laine’s during their respective draft years.”

@Lays

Having watched Laine extensively at the time, and Kakko the last 2 years I can say that Laine's shot overall is better because of the velocity. Kakko's shot isn't really his focal point. He finesses the puck into a corner, rather than slap it behind the goalie. Kakko's overall game is better than Laine. His skating, puck-handling, overall strength, shooting, passing, hockey IQ. It's all good to elite. Laine's shot is elite, but that's it. That's what his career is built on. He is not an elite skater, passer or puck-hander.

I don't really trust MSG Networks to get comparisons right

Drafting based on other teams is a losing strategy. If they get Kakko, it's because they want Kakko.
So, it they WANT Kakko, but the Devils take him, taking Hughes is a losing strategy? If they WANT Hughes, but the Devils take him, is it a losing strategy to take Kakko?

If the Penguins brought an Ovechkin jersey in 2004, for the very slight chance that the Caps went Malkin, was it a losing strategy? Oh no, the Pens WANTED Malkin over Ovechkin the whole time. The losing strategy is not being prepared for another team throwing a curveball. See: NY Giants 1996 draft. I can post an article describing it.

I've only watched Kakko's highlights, but one thing that really stuck out to me. There almost no breakaway or odd man rush goals. Can someone who has seen him play explain this? I know he's a beast around the net and on the boards, has great agility and ridiculous puck handling but almost all his offense comes in the hockey equivalent of the half-court offense.

Good observation, I had the same thought.

I could say the same thing about OV ...

Not going to lie... Will be a little disappointed if the Devils call Kakko's name...

... For all of like 5 minutes. Hughes is going to be a monster

Wonder if we can bundle two late firsts, Kreider and Andersson for the first OA. Probably a pipe dream ...

good write up...i agree Lianes shot is definitely better than Kakko’s but for a poster to say his shot is one of his weaker points just floored me. Now i havent scouted many players yet outside the top 15 yet but i’m not seeing players with a better shot than him, including Hughes (who is more pass first while Kakko is shoot first)

Steve Kournianos, who made that comparison, posts here a lot so ask him why he compared the shots that way

A guy like Leason might be a good pickup but I don't see him as a late first--I see him more as somewhere in the 2nd. He's a guy you have to sign almost right away and turn pro. He's big and strong and he made Canada's WJC team which is quite an accomplishment for a 19 year old undrafted player.

I like the idea of the Rangers getting one of Dorofeyev, Brink or Caufield with our Winnipeg (or Dallas--if it turns into a 1st) pick. There's also a bunch of D that I like--Harley and Seider might also be targets between say 15 and 25 and Heinola somewhere in the 20's.

The thing with Kakko is that he doesn’t really have any weaknesses, his shot and skating probably need the most work out of everything, but they’re not net minuses

Exactly. It is like being offered a million dollars in cash. Pile A has is all $100's and pile B is a mix of $100's and $50's.
