I don't think it's 100% clear-cut that number one is Hughes

Yes, it is.

Virtually every NHL scout (literally) publicly has Hughes #1, and a majority of them also have Kakko #2.

There is a gap this year between #1 and #2, and there is a gap this year between #2 and.................................................... everyone else.

Therefore, it is an absolute LOCK the Devils are taking Hughes and the Rangers are taking Kakko. This is very uncomplicated this year.

True.

1. Even if for some reason Shero thinks Kakko may be the better pick, he’s not going to take that risk, since it could possibly cost his job if it doesn’t work out as planned. If Hughes doesn’t work out as planned, at least he’ll have an excuse.

2. Hughes fits in very well with the Devils’ identity: speed.

3. Shero apparently has close ties to the Hughes family. That’s probably not a good reason to pick someone, and I doubt Shero puts much thought into something like that, but all else being equal, you go with that.

Virtually every NHL scout has (literally) publicized their rankings?

I think this video is also pretty good example how dominant Kakko can be against his peers. He was arguably the best player in Finland's gold winning team as an underager.

Gorton lucked out getting the #2 pick. He can't go wrong (I hope). If he got the first pick and choose Hughes and later Kakko killed it, he would be judged harshly and visa versa. Drafting second he is probably going to get a very good NHL player and if the Devils picks exceeds Gorton's pick he can say they had the first pick he was "stuck" with leftovers. He can't go wrong taking whoever the Devils don't take.

Can we stop this? This isn't a 7th or 9th overall pick where 31 teams have 31 different lists. This is 2nd overall where literally everyone has the same player ranked the highest

No, most of the pro. scouts have Jack Hughes as #1.

Steve Valiquette said it best on the broadcast.

No GM is risking his job by not taking the consensus no 1 pick.

As much criticism as there is on Yakupov, nobody should be blaming Edmonton for picking him first overall. All the scouts had him 1st overall. All the mock drafts, all the reporters, all the armchair GMs.

I was coming here to propose a deal where you send us 2nd overall for our 4th overall + 16th overall + 2nd round pick

Then I saw how excited you're about Kakko. Not-so-sincere congrats for the lotto luck guys, I'm so jealous. You guys will get a good one. :)
It’s not even all Kakko, drafting this high just doesn’t happen to the Rangers. I still can’t wrap my head around it.

4th overall would still be pretty high :naughty:

Hah yeah I get what you're saying. Hopefully your management manages to make quick and successful retool/rebuild. :)

Yes true a good time to be a Rangers fan, because Jeff Gorton is writing history with such a low draft lottery pick. We needed that Franchise player, because MSG had too many empty seats end of this season.
