I FINALLY got a chance to get an extended look at Seider.

I see why people are high on him, but I wouldn't be at all comfortable taking him as high as some have him. Love the base of skills, but hes a project through and through.

Like him in the 20s. Not quite as comfortable in the slots moving up from there.

First of all congratz for winning the 2nd pick !
Secondly, gonna be really interesting to see Kakko at the men´s world championships next month. I could easily imagine placing him on Barkov´s wing and maybe Teräväinen on the other wing ? Usually these super kids have been placed in the top line straight away and can´t really think of anybody more suitable for Kaapo than Barkov.
The downside of course is that he may well tear it up in those games and go 1st after all.

Me too and probably in the back half the 20's.

Depending on where the Winnipeg pick falls, he may be a fine selection there.

If we get Dallas and/or Tampa's 1st, hes great value there.

All depends on what happens with the stars and TB picks. If they both become 1sts, definitely try to package all 3 to move up. Of they cant find a partner, consider moving 2 of those for 1's next year. Especially if a fringe team is open for business.

If you are interested in trading a player (kreider for example) to get another first, edmonton and montreal might be willing. They likely thinking win-now. Maybe chicago, but going to need a big return to give up the 3rd pick.

Agreed. I think it depends on a couple of scenarios.

If Kreider is moved, and the pick is in the mid-teens, you probably have the “best” foundation for that approach.

This could potentially be helped further if Winnipeg’s pick is higher, say the 19-22 range.

If the former happens, but not the latter, it becomes more difficult.

If neither happens, it becomes a real long shot, even if Tampa wins.

If neither happens and Tampa doesn’t win, the best you can hope for is to maybe make a move in the 20s, similar to last year. Not that it would be a bad thing.

I hate doing this because it always looks like I'm defending the pick when I'm not; Jessiman was expected to go in the early 20s, he wasn't 'off the board'. We took him 10 spots too high (there were rumours a few teams around 13-16 were interested), which was criminal with who was available, and if we were that keen on him we should have tried to at least trade down and get some more assets, but we didn't just pluck a random name out...

Actually kind of similar to McI where mocks/rankings had him going anywhere from 17-32 (with an average being about 23)

Jessiman was connected to the Rangers for a little while before the draft and it made me sick to stomach.

I did not like him as a potential pick. Frankly, that pick and Farladeau were the low points for me.

Add in Montoya/Korpikoski the year after (poor draft, but still...) and it really was just 3 years of absolute futility, with a very slim silver lining being Dubinsky and Callahan

Not on Team Finland. Laine forced his way into it by winning the Liiga playoffs MVP.. Normally rookies have to do a lot more than vets to be invited to the team.

Any word from Gorton about this? I know it’s a no brainer but I’d feel so much better if I heard something indicting they don’t have some stupid plan to go off the board

Even Deadspin getting in on the fun.

And in the end, the Devils will still have to make a difficult choice.

The Rangers, though? Their scouts can drive up to the Poconos tomorrow, slam endless Long Island Iced Teas all spring, and pass out until they’re on the clock in June. Their decision couldn’t be more stress-free, because the Devils will make it for them. What a beautiful offseason this will be for GM Jeff Gorton.

Lauren Theisen was a good pick-up for Deadspin, btw.

I don’t think you’ll get the word from him until he gets up to the podium. I think this is a lot different than picking a guy from a group of 5-10 players who can go closer to #10. But if we’re going to look at last year as a similar draft where there’s 2 clear guys then the rest, Carolina had Svechnikov go to Raleigh to show him around the arena and introduce him to the organization, if the Rangers (or Devils) do that, that’ll probably be as clear as it gets

MSG interviewed him last night and all he would say is that they like a lot of guys at the top end of the draft. Nothing about Kakko specifically or their intention to go with the consensus.

That being said, like I said in another thread, what can you expect the guy to say? They can't say they love Kakko until they know he's the guy that's there to take. If they start fawning over him only to have Jersey take him 1st then they're going to look like donkeys.

It'll be Kakko. He's definitively the best option available at #2 assuming Hughes goes to Jersey.

We won't. He's just being diplomatic. Saying the right things, to not give anything away.

Also, if we hint at either one, Jersey might say "Hey y'know, the Rangers really like him..." and jam a knife into our backs.
