Yeah, Im starting to do some more research now that this is real. Seems like Kakko has all the tools to step in right away and make an impact. Very exciting.

The Rangers got the #2 pick in a draft where there are two consensus generational players at the top of the board. This just doesn't happen. It has immeasurably sped up the rebuild

Franchise talents, sure, but not Generational. Lets not get ahead of ourselves. This isn't Ovechkin/Malkin 2004 draft.

I saw something that compared Hughes and Kakko and it was interesting. It stated that Hughes has the hire upside, but needs work on the defensive side of the puck. Kakko they opined has no noticeable weaknesses.

I could see the rangers looking to make a big splash with a trade though...
I posted this earlier and I’ll post it again. I’m not advocating for this to happen but I can see the Rangers trading Mika to Colorado for the 4. Why? The Rangers only have a few tradable assets remaining. Mika is the biggest and best. Breakout year, plays center, great contract, young. Why do the Rangers do it? For a few reasons: 1) they get the second and fourth pick. We all know where they’re going with the second, but with the fourth they can take whoever they want, a center, a defender, etc. That would really set the franchise up. 2) it allows the Rangers’ young centers to all have enough ice time to develop. 3) it would most definitely guarantee the Rangers finish at the bottom of the standings again while grabbing another high end player, thus completing their last rebuilding season. Why does Colorado do it? The 4th pick is like house money to them. They’re a top heavy team without much depth. Adding Mika as the 2c instantly bumps the Avs up a tier. Colorado’s window is just opening. Yes they’re adding Makar, but how long until that 4th pick is ready to make significant contributions for them? They might say hey let’s trade for the 25 year old center who plays in all situations and just scored 70 points. Hell, the deal can be broadened by adding Kreider. I’ll say it again I’m not advocating for a trade I’m just making an observation

I can't see Mika going anywhere right now, especially in a world where the Rangers are taking a potential franchise winger.

That would be like dropping a corvette engine in your ride and then hacking off the steering wheel with a saw.

Kakko becomes Mika’s running mate on RW. Mika becomes an 80 point player.

I think Kakko is the superior prospect.

Keeping in mind that Kakko isn't doing what he's doing against his peers, he's doing it against men.

The kid's the real deal.
That's what makes him so special. As great as Hughes is (and he is great) he's succeeding against players of his own age. Kakko was dominating against men at 18.

I have to tell you, if this team can add some offense around the two, and give it time to cook, I think Mika can go a little beyond that still.

He needs to stay healthy, and the prospects we have need to cash-in on their potential, but I think Mika can post Scheifele numbers.

I’m trying to not get too carried away. My dream scenario is adding the right center behind Mika by trading up, and then getting another high end forward in next year’s 1st round. Just to appease you...a top six of Mika, Zegras, Raymond, Chytil, Kakko and Kravtsov in two years.

Yeah, even if you trade Zibanejad for the 4th pick and that player becomes a better player than Zib, you're only barely ahead of where you started.

The ideal is a one-two punch of Zibanejad and a comparable talent to Zibanejad.

Zibanejad/Kakko
Zegras or Dach/Kravtsov

Almost doesn't matter who the LWs are at that point. Whew.

We take care of that in next year’s draft.

I totally admit I'm greedy and want Zegras too.

Love having 3 or possibly 4 first round picks. But I'd move those extra firsts in a heartbeat if my end result was Kakko and Zegras.

There's my potential franchise player, and there's my potential playmaking center.

2020 is still an option, and I cross that bridge when I get to it, but if Kakko and Zegras are our haul from 2019, and we find a gem or two in the later rounds, THAT is the type of draft I've been waiting for.

Just to help @jas 's statement in the other thread, confirmed by GMJG that the Rangers will not be taking a goalie in the 1st round!!

giphy.gif

he didn't rule out taking one in the 2nd round though lol

Assuming we get to pick Kakko, we're 50% closer to my wet dream:

Kakko and Byfield. Git'er dun Gorts!

*disclaimer: still unphazed, only after the fact of picking Kakko, will I feel some exitement.

Generational might be overkill....

I'm **** at proposals but wonder if Avs would budge on Kreider + late 1st for pick #4.

No, they wouldn't. They'd give up their #16 maybe, but even that isn't certain. I bet if you propose #16 for Kreider on the Trade board, most Avs fans will angrily reject it.
