IFK was awfull pretty much the whole season. Yeah, they finished third in regular season but that was only 'cause they have such a good roster. Their coach couldn't really make the team play his way (if he even had any playing style at all).

To case Grandlund, I don't know did that failed SO attempt at WJC affect him this much. He hasn't been the same player at all after WJC.

I think he might have lost some confidence from that, and him failing his shootout attempt in the Talviklassiko and on the Jokerit-HIFK game #2.

Would be curious to see his before/after the WJC stats. Kid just didn't do nearly as much after that huge start.

As someone posted at another message board, of Finland's WJC stars, Armia was pretty much the only player who didn't have issues after the tournament. Though he did disappear in the playoff (and subsequently got injured as well). Barkov got mono. Pulkkinen did fine for the month of January then started having confidence issues in February and picked up some leg injury towards the end of the regular season and totally lost his game. Granlund also picked up some illness as did other IFK players and wasn't the same after returning. Salomäki had problems with his spleen (though that started at the tournament already). Hakanpää got injured. That team was cursed!

Markus Granlund remained relatively productive throughout the remainder of the regular season by the looks of things, before falling off in the playoffs.

On Granlund, I think he shouldn't be picked for the WC, but it will happen, hockey politics. After the WJC he had 4+9=13 points in 15 games. Still pretty good, but does he deserve a spot on the rooster more than some other players, don't think so.

However, I'm not only saying this because he hasn't been playing well, but also because it might do him some good to lose the spotlight for a while. Although I don't know, if that would hurt his confidence even more, not being picked.

To the other point, Armia, Teräväinen, Ma Granlund and Pokka played pretty well even after WJC, but Teräväinen obviously wasn't even there so, I don't know if that counts.

The question is. Does Jukka Jalonen have balls to drop Granlund from WC?

There's no sense dropping him, this "not good enough for WC" is pure overriaction. He's got a month to get his act together, and even if he doesn't reach the same form he was in the first half of the season he's still an asset to the team.

Even if he suddenly wasn't good enough (he is), he wouldn't be dropped because Kummola won't take not having the stamp on the national team.

The point isn't whether he is good enough or not. The point is, if he is the best possible option for Finland. Of course he will be an asset, if he is chosen, which he will, cause as you stated Kummola does have some power. From the view of his development, as I said earlier, I'm not even sure if it will do him any good. There will be a lot of pressure, since he did do really well last time. And it's home WC. So, if he doesn't play well it will do more damage.

If I was Jalonen I'd probably not take him, but a lot depends on who will be available from the NHL/KHL.

Just think about it. Jalonen leaving Granlund out. If Finland wouldn't finnish first, Jalonen is also out. Just remember the case Jussi Jokinen at the time of Olympics.

I hope Granlund won't get picked, but he absolutely will. Even if Kummola won't push it through the Finns will.

Atleast in the NT he doesn't have to have the weight on his shoulders, because he isn't the best or most important player on the NT. There will be others sharing the burden with him. I wouldn't be that worried of his psyche, either. He handles these type of situations very well, and needs to learn how to play himself out of psychological slumps like the one he's in now (unless there's some injury we don't know about).

Based on his comments and if Granlund doesn't produce in the pre-tournament exhibition games and the last EHT tournament, I think he will.

No he won't. At least he is 13th forward, but most likely 2nd liner.

Look Jarkko Immonen, he doesn't produce that much, still he is pretty much a lock for the team. Immonen - Granlund worked so well, why would Jalonen want to split them?

And it's not only mental either. It's hard to play hockey on top level if you aren't on same level with your line mates. Hockey isn't a game where one man show works, everyone has to work to together and that's not happening it other players on the ice can't keep up with someone.

I think that Finnish roster will look something like this:

T. Ruutu - M. Koivu - O. Jokinen
T. Lydman - S. Vatanen

A. Pihlstrom - S. Koivu/Mi. Granlund - T. Selanne
L. Kukkonen - J. Pitkanen

V. Leino - J. Immonen - Mi. Granlund/N. Kapanen
O. Vaananen - T. Eronen

L. Komarov - P. Nokelainen - M. Pyorala

Goalies same as last year.

Selänne is a question mark but possible but I would def. take Niskala in top six D. He was a real stud last year and what I've heard, has been good this season too in KHL.

Jokinen is NOT coming at 99% certainty. He doesn't like Jalonen too much, too much **** going between them at last olympics. He's said he's national career is over.

I really do hope to see Selanne one more time in wc, would be great way to end hes amazing career. He totally deserves it.

Okay, haven't followed Russian league that much this season but he was good last year, but personally i like Kukkonen more.

That's sad, i hope he can swallow hes pride, try to make it work and carry hes country colors on home turf. I just like him that much.

Wow, been a long ass time since this thread has been used. Anyways, just thought I'd give it a little bump after tonight's solid performance by Finnish baby Jesus. 2 goals and 2 assists for Houston tonight in their win over Texas.
