Feels like an in between season coming up. Next wave of prospects aren't ready and the NHL roster has too many gaps for us to seriously compete for a playoff spot without extreme luck. I think the roster lacks a 1C, a top 6 winger, utility forwards, a top 4 rhd and backup goalie.
I think we can be a really complete team around 2026 but I'm so tired of missing the playoffs.

We need another batch of 2002-2003 sort of culture/talent moves. I’d start with doing my best to get Stamkos. Whoever we bring in as coach he needs to have who the leadership group will be, to buy in immediately, and a guy like Stamkos is someone the team should look up to based on his career, also make him captain. Hits many boxes the team needs in one shot.

I think a ROR/Cirelli type center that can handle the hard minutes could work on a first line. Benson and Quinn as wingers would make that a pretty complete line (except for size).

Cozens-Tuch could work as the foundation of a high energy line.

Peterka-Thompson as more of a chaotic line.

I think Stamkos is more of what we already have in Thompson. I would like a player that can lead and teach with his defensive play. I doubt anyone will be available though.

I think the issue is you could offer Stamkos a three year max deal and he would most likely still say no. He has his rings, 116 million in career earnings, played for only one team and that team is better off than us today. Why would he move to Buffalo?

This organization needs an infusion of veteran leadership and that is the reason why I’m eyeing Stamkos. He’s a winner, came from an organization that has produced players that developed and played/practiced at high standards.

Since we are hiring a head coach, that coach needs veterans that buy-in and lead the guys in the same way that was looked at Drury buying into Ruff as soon as he arrived.

The players say that they want accountability and to be pushed, but they haven’t had a coach to buy in before at the NHL level, and sure as heck didn’t have a player leader that led the charge in doing that.

Fully aware of that barrier. It’s why it’s important for Adams to actually show things will be different in Buffalo and they are takings differently. I don’t know if he would, or being close to home would be enticing enough. But they need to try.

But my thoughts on what ails the team and the sort of players to address those issues still remain and still apply.

I thought we were trying to get rid of the lazy effort on defense guys? Stamkos at this point of his career is essentially a PP specialist.

Stamkos shouldn't even be on our radar. Just not what we need.

Have to agree. Eric Johnson was supposed to be the guy from a winning culture. He did f*** all here. I’m more interested in getting guys that are hungry, and good, and physically strong, than guys that have just simply been there.

I’m ok with a short term deal on a proven veteran leader.

Once upon a time, Pegula wanted to back up the brinks truck to sign Shane Doan. That was right before the tank when they knew they would be getting young high end talent.

Imagine Eichel and Reinhart with Doan as captain? Things might have been different.

If there is any truth to Farabee getting moved, I'd like to be in on that. Fairly cost controlled for 4 more years, strong production 5v5, played for a coach with standards. Listened to a little of his post season presser and seems like he's got a good mindset. Top 6 is a bit crowded with wingers, but with VO gone, you could move krebs to make space.

he seems to fallen out of favor with the coach/gm so imo he is 100% available.

Based on his time on line combinations over the last two years, he has usually been saddled with Okposo/Girgs/Skinner/Oloffson. When he was given a true second line combo Peterka/Quinn/Mitts/Benson he magically looked much better and his advanced metrics looked much better (I am not an advanced metrics savant but I can understand the concepts).
The linemate argument doesn’t address what I don't like with his game. Which is his consistently poor decision making.

Plus your attempt to compare him to Mitts makes this argument even weaker.
-Mitts had his break out after Krueger got fired (20-21 season). He produced in 20+games at a 25g 50pt pace centering Asplund and pre breakout Tage.
-Following season (21-22) got hurt first game. Then came back to center VO/Asplund
- Spent the bulk of the following season (22-23) centering VO/Jost.
Re: his peers, I focus on Benson, he was never saddled with Skinner, Oloffson, Girgs or Okposo. That is impressive for a rookie to not be put in that spot. When Benson was with Krebs that was his two highest CF%, which tells me they work good together, put a trigger man on that line (Tuch or Quinn) and you could have a potent line.

To me it just seems like the coaching staff gave Krebs a game or two to go out and prove it and it takes more commitment than a game or two, but when given the chance he actually elevated his play and his linemates and the coaching staff then put him back to the black hole.
Its not remotely true he was never given a chance to prove himself.

21-22 -> He gets called up and played 48gms. Some at center but a decent amount at wing. His most frequent linemate and center was Cozens.
22-23 -> Starts season in NHL and is part of a 3 young player rotation with Quinn/Peterka. By late November he had lost the competition with Quinn/Peterka. That’s when the kid line was born and Jost was put with VO/Mitts.

The problem Krebs had was twofold. He was never going to supplant any of top 3 centers (Tage/Cozens/Mitts). But also wasnt very good on the wing. He needed to figure out how to be an effective winger. He never did.

As for getting a fair shot. Krebs got a half season head start on his primary competition (Quinn/Peterka) the following season. Then had the same opportunity they did. He just lost the battle.

We will just have to agree to disagree as we see it vastly different.

The Tampa guy we should have been after was McDonagh 2 years ago. He was traded away for essentially nothing but cap relief. And there's still a good amount of tread left on those tires even now. Would have been the perfect mentor for our young defense core.

Sadly, they worked with were McDonagh landed. That was area specific for him. He had full trade protection.

Im probably the only one but I would like to get Crosby for 2 years. He can still play at a high level, has experience and can push Tage and Cozens down til they are more ready.

Give him some offensive weapons on the wing and he will produce.
