Tribute The Rebuild Poll: 2023-24 Playoffs or Tanking?

What side of the fence are you on?

  • Team Tank (sell everyone born before Y2K)

  • Playoffs Bandwagon (maybe not buyers but definetly feeling it)

  • The Muddy Middle (not sellers or buyers- the whatever approach)

picked "C"... though not out of indecision, more out of viewing A/B as both unlikely and poor options for our current state.

No way I see Hughes "selling" every vet he can regardless of what's left behind. That would throw the rest of the season into turmoil that runs contrary to what they are building and undermine the competitive approach the team clearly has with the players.

I also don't any value in trading away valuable assets for short-term playoff push, nor do i see Hughes considering that a reasonable option... again here runs contrary to the approach they have laid out and followed quite meticulously.

What seems most likely... moving any assets that aren't part of next year's plan IF the asking price is met (more value than the perceived value of keeping them for remainder of season) and IF they have an internal replacement they view as adequate to keep the team competitive on a nightly basis.

Armia, Pearson, one of the goalies, are the pieces i think are sure to be gone if there is any interest.
Monahan/Kovacevic if the asking price is met
Dvorak/Anderson unlikely unless part of a bigger deal
picks/prospects if a key asset they have targeted becomes available

not a sell off
not a futures for right now help
something in the middle... which fits where we are at in the rebuild, somewhere in the middle ;)

I voted for C because I'm not so sure that this team needs to sell assets in order to tank.

Our roster is just as bad as last year's. And as we continue to run into injuries, our stop gaps will be exposed - as they always are. Things didn't go that well for us when injuries piled up last year.

Bottom of the Atlantic, a ~70 pt season and a high pick at the draft. Hopefully the young guys score some goals along the way.

Doesn't appear they are about to turn a corner yet although the competitive nature of the group is there. They are still in the best division in the league, Boston, Toronto & Florida look like playoff teams. Tampa has Vasilevskiy back and Detroit is better. They still need some veterans around and free agency is not a great place to add them (the land of bad contracts and Mtl is not a prime destination). Would try to sell anyone who isn't in the 2024-25 plans.

I think sellers for sure, but I wouldn't be mad if they made the playoffs or won a few games. So I guess not a tanker, but a cautious artillery.
Crap we are in a position where if we were in the hunt similar to Detroit Buffalo and Washington last season. I would hope to God we'd be smart enough to pull the tent pegs sell and hope for lottery luck. It's the new way.

Of course we're team tank.
Then draft a winger to flank.
score lots of goals then make bank.
Play a big role like Tom Hanks.
So let's watch this team walk the plank,
so in the rankings we sank,
It's our best chance not to stank.

I'll let myself out.

If we make the playoffs it'll be because some of our younger guys took a big jump this season - All while having Dach out the entire season and Newhook miss a big stretch of games.

Neither options.

Same as last year, all I care about is kids progressing, putting up points on the scoreboard and gain some confidence.......obviously, that should come with some wins I won't be mad about, just like I won't be mad if they lose every game 6-5 until the end of the season., as long as kids are progressing.

I don't really care about getting a high pick as it won't be the one the couch scouts will want so they will endlessly complain about it which makes this whole thing worst than winning and getting a pick a little lower. I don't mind picking 5 or 8 as I look at the points leader in the NHL right now, most of them were not even picked Top 5.

Voted tank, but it's more that I would like to see a few players traded like Monohan, Savard, and a goalie or something. After that, wherever the team lands for the remaining season is what it is.

The coming off-season is where a signing and trade or two towards competitiveness should be made.

I imagine this is what it’s like being Marc Bergevin’s brain. If the team wins a couple games ; lets go for playoffs anything can happen. Team loses a game ; we need to retool but lets make it quick.

How ‘bout just stick to a plan.

Pretty clear that they are bad enough they can't compete with the good teams.. and aren't bad enough to consistently lose to the bad/mid teams.

So our draft position will come down to how many of those mid/bad teams we can lose to.
Probably we finish picking top ten. There are too many bad teams this year and not enough playoff teams to beat us down. Assuming no more injuries.

There's 4 relevant forwards on the team , everybody else is irrelevant and should be flipped for the rebuild.

Suzuki Caufield Dach and Slafkovsky are the only forwards worth even talking about everybody else should be flipped , you can keep newhook good third line soldier

God please tank.

I like the D and it will get better when the kids develop and get in the lineup

We are 3-4 years away I know fefans want the rebuild to end soon but we will just be spinning our wheels for 10 years like the Pacio DD era if we try to compete for 8th in the east again.

I know some people think DD Pacio Subban era was the good old days but frankly those teams were absolute trash when compared to contenders around the league. We should strive for more than the garbage teams we had during the 2000's that never properly rebuilt

I'm on the "whatever" bandwagon because if cheering for this team has teached me one thing, it's that when I want to push for the playoffs we don't make it, when I want to tank we draft uniteresting or shitty picks and when I expect absolutely nothing they somehow end up in the cup finals
