The Race for the Calder Trophy

He shouldn't though.

The League uses whatever current narrative they are pushing when it comes to these awards. They're trying to rebuild the Blackhawks garbage image right now because, when good, they are one of the leagues big revenue generators.

Bedard has missed 15 games and going by the awards history that is enough to say he shouldn't win it. RNH missed 20 games in 2011 and had the same amount of points as Landeskog who played all 82, and the excuse for RNH not winning was that "staying healthy" was a requisite for the award. Same with McDavid in 2015.

this League has no consistency and will give Bedard the award based on nothing more than he's a Blackhawk and they need some "good press"
Put the tin foil hat away. The league doesn't even determine who wins the Calder.

Hockey writers do. Now if you want tobargue they don't know much and tend to just look at points go for it.

So now you move goal posts.

Bedard didn't have many options in that situation and the puck got taken away. Big deal.

Btw, Bedard with an assist and goal so far today.
I didn't move any goal posts, and he very easily could have got the puck deep instead of tossing a muffin across the blue line.

You got a source/quote for the bolded?

I remember you used to love per 60 stats, so I’ll lay it out for you.

All numbers are all situations. With Bedard on the ice, Chicago scores 3.31 G/60. Without him, that number drops to 1.73. When Brock Faber hits the ice, he limits the opposition to 3.12 GA/60. When he’s off the ice, that number skyrockets to… 3.36 (at 5v5 he’s a wash, 2.58 to 2.61).

Just imagine if that one poster didn’t say Bedard was well ahead of Hughes as a prospect, how things could have been different. Bedard is bad defensively. He completely alters a franchise offensively. Faber wins the Calder any other year for being a good all situations top pair defenseman as a rookie, he’s just against Bedard which is unfortunate.
It's hilarious that you think Hughes has anything to do with my opinion on Bedard.

You criticized him for his defense on that goal, and when I and others explained how it wasn't Bedard's fault (it was redirected/bad luck) you redirected your criticism to the pass.
The pass is a bad defensive play, I explicitly mentioned his decision making in high risk areas. How do you not understand that?

Bedard just made an incredible move for a goal... waived by offsides. That might be the 3rd point by my count he's been robbed of from an offside call.

It's what you were doing.
Except it wasn't, as already explained. Do you not understand how a bad giveaway is a bad defensive play?
May not count on the scoreboard, but a few inches had no impact on the play, Just another demonstration of why he's the Calder contestant leader.
He's definitely a top 2 candidate. He's going to be a whale of a player, especially as he matures his all around game.

It's probably something basically like this:

Bedard's offense ~ Faber's defense
Faber's offense > Bedard's defense

So Faber is initially ahead. Now it's just a matter of how much extra credit you want to give Bedard for being 18 and playing with shit players.

He's THE candidate and you can tell from watching him. 18 year old 1C carrying the offensive load on a team that without him scores at 1.36 GF/game. He has no help and is still looking fantastic. It is more impressive than what Faber is doing, as great of a season as he is having. The proof will be in the pudding when Bedard wins the award.

Could not agree more people are really trying to downplay just how good he is

The thing that works against Faber is people inherently get more excited by great offense than great defense. Bedard will get more votes because of that. Also since he is only 18 and his team completely fell apart when he was injured.

Nobody calls a bad play in the offensive zone a bad defensive play. Well, nobody but you apparently.
This is patently false. When you say things like this it makes you look like someone who's new to the game.

Managing the puck at both blue lines is key in reducing chances against.

As a Hawks fan, who cares if he wins or not? Crosby and McDavid don’t have Calders in their hardware cabinet. Just be happy we got this guy.

Faber has as compelling an argument as Bedard to win the trophy.

Bedard IS Chicago's offense. Worse numbers for Faber than I thought they would be, but they do align with how much he's struggled defensively since about Christmas. His defensive impact has been much overstated as a whole. Very good for a rookie, but not nearly as good as the narrative.

2 Chicago goals so far today, 2 Bedard points (assist, goal). I do think he’ll win the Calder if he plays the remaining games this season.
The only thing that could keep Bedard from winning is another significant injury. It's always been the only thing to stop him.

Bedard's offensive is superior to Faber's defense. That stats speak for themselves. And since that is side of the game that matches what their teams needs most from them, Bedard is the deserving heavy favorite.

Does anyone have Chicago's record with and without Bedard? I'm not sure where to find that.

Nah. Roughly the same, all things being equal. Then it's just a matter of how much extra credit you feel like giving, like I said.

His defense is better than you're saying.

Sort of like what this thread is entirely about.
