The Race for the Calder Trophy

To think back to the intense debates on prospect ranking on HFWild this offseason Surrounding Faber!

Hey, he proved it. Neither me nor DB were ever against Faber or anything like it was being painted, we just wanted to see more. He's shown way more.

If we're GM's picking one of these rookies for a playoff run for this year only, I don't see how you choose anyone but Faber.
Because I saw many of them. Someone needs forwards or even center, someone needs pp qb who is capable to play solid two way game, someone needs more of defensive defenseman who can join the rush.
Don't make like a mirror mistake to not seeing any other young player other than Faber like some fans makes it with Bedard.

I think most GM's would prefer the guy that 1) already has playoff experience, and 2) excels in shutting down other teams top players, over the guys who put up a bunch of points on the PP. You know Faber has more even strength points than any other rookie defenseman? That's on top of the fact that his defensive game laps them several times. Now that he's playing on the PP sometimes, who knows how much his scoring could increase to match their overall output.

I'm not saying those other players aren't good, or don't have merit for being in the conversation for the Calder trophy, but the playoffs aren't the Calder trophy, and GM's aren't the fans or the writers who vote for it.

I understand your position, but if team needs forward, they will choose Rossi or Zary. Zary has great xGF stats, produce a lot, Rossi is playing center role pretty competent and I would not scare to put him on the second or mostly on the third line of potential Cup contender. If they need PP QB they will pick Hughes, 100 times out of 100. Of course if team have PP QB and need more defensive defenseman, they should absolutely trade for Faber. As defenseman who will play against best and can make more impact in offensive zone - may be Faber, but may be Nemec.(I would prefer both). You should understand - even as a Devils fan, I would call for Faber as for Calder winner now. But understand other angles of vision.

Okay then what was the point of your exercise? To discredit Bedard? If a team needs more offense they're going to take Bedard, just like you think a team would take Hughes if they need a PPQB or Zary if they need someone with good xGF stats.

I think Bedard is questionable. Especially for Cup contender - even with his offense he can make a trouble for his team. But I understand your point. Faber looks first in the line. And like I said - he is my number one for Calder too. Again - good enough two way player with some pluses - Rossi is competent center, Zary is competent forward, Luke Hughes is a perfect PP QB for first PP brigade, Nemec is very good on the both ends, Faber is very good too, especially on defensive side. All of them are good enough to play 200 foot hockey. Bedard? Isnt. Overall my point was clear from the beggining.

Ill agree with you once he stop getting one of the highest percentage of offensive zone start while floating cherry picking rushes most shifts.

Until then, he a overtalented on ice liability.

i'll never forget that time when Pavel Bure lost the Calder to Brad May and the scathing letter the voters sent Bure afterwards complaining about his offensive zone starts

I'll admit, he's been more than the Hjalmarsson type player I was expecting him to be.

I cannot believe how much HATE Bedard generates..

Bedard, who is NOT even 18.5 years old yet...

* Has 26 points in 30 games
- ONLY 7 of those points are on the PP.
* Has 9 more points than his closest rookie competitor
- and most of those competitors are 20+ years old,
* Has everyone in the league trying to shut him down
- while playing on a team full of NHL rejects,

...and many of you can't give him his due.

I usually don't come into this thread because posters support players based on nationality - I've been guilty of it in the past.

My bad for looking at this car crash as I drove by.

That’s disrespectful to Hjalmarsson.
No, it's not. I have the highest respect for Hjalmarsson. He was an integral part to the Hawks winning Cups as one of the best #3 s in the league at the time. I think Faber's potential has him as a 30-40 point #2. Hjalmarsson never scored more than 26 points in a season. Faber is almost halfway to that through 28 games this season...

Hjalmarsson was generally the #2 behind Keith. I get your point about Faber being better offensively than you expected, though.

Hjalmarsson was just that good defensively.

Well it was said more like.. oh he's "only" going to be this as if it was disappointing, but because he put up more points, then he is a step above.

Idk why I am even arguing this, its not that important. I like the player.

It's because the way some people on our board were talking during the offseason, you'd think he was going to be a Charlie McAvoy type all situations 1D. The counter was that some people expected more of a Niklas Hjalmarsson type, excellent defensive, but low offensive guy. It turns out he could end up somewhere between, because the offense is more impressive than we initially thought.

But yeah, we agree, we like the player, and the Hjalmarsson comp wasn't meant to be an insult to anyone.

Exactly what I was thinking. Well said. It’s so weird - every time he gets points, people jump in to explain why it doesn’t count. Then they talk about how it’s some injustice that some other rookie of their choice won’t win. Bedard has been the best rookie this year and is only 18…he will rightfully win the Calder. The only people disputing it and whining will be a group on HF.

Yup.

Most of these trophy races are a nationalistic thing. Posters want a player from their country to win and they're willing to ignore the numbers / the eye test / the facts to justify their opinion - I've done it myself.

Having said that, if the season were to end today, it'd be a crime if anyone else won but Bedard and, deep down, everyone knows it - no matter what they spew on these boards.

Bedards last 5-7 games have been much better defensively.
and really cleaned up his shift changes almost instantly. they were pretty bad up until 2-3 games ago.

holy sh*t his team sucks though. I feel like we're scratching the very surface of what we can see from him. imagine being an 18 year old and your team is so bad that every team you face can focus primarily on you because the rest of the roster is no threat. it's remarkable that he's at almost a point per game.
