Said this last summer, but no matter what happens with KP, the worst of it will be they wasted a 20th overall pick.

Unlike the Browns who mortgaged their future on Watson.

If he fails, man, I almost feel bad for the fans. Almost.

That will put that franchise basically back to being a year 1 expansion team.

At what point is it OK to say he's not rusty?

I admit I like hearing these kinds of reports because I am happy when the Browns are bad and living in central Ohio there is plenty of opportunity for schadenfreude with some of my buddies (although Browns fans only just slightly outnumber Bengals and Steelers fans). Maybe this is a narrative that writers are running with and it's way off-base. But at some point it's not rust anymore. I'd think we're already past that point.

I was just in Columbus a few weekends ago for a concert. I was shocked at how many Steelers fans there were. I actually asked a bartender what the football team is around here, and he said, "probably Pittsburgh to be honest." I was sort of shocked. Loved Columbus though. So many restaurants and bars there that would absolutely kill it here.

It's a really cool city I'm happy to call it home (sort of, we live in probably the equivalent of the Zelie area).

As for the abundance of Steelers fans, between the amount of folks who've relocated here from greater Pittsburgh and the whole valley/tri-state area (which I guess includes me), plus some NFL fans adopting the Steelers when there were no Browns for a while and then not going back, plus just having been mostly good for the past 20 years, that'll do it in a market that's historically split anyway. But if the Browns get good, those fans will come out of the woodwork and/or wear it on their sleeves more.

And it's not just NFL fans. We're 20+ years into the CBJ and the arena still gets inundated by Pens fans for games. (I believe many of those are people who wear CBJ colors to games except for when they play the Pens.)

EDIT:
Sorry for so much off-topic.

He was never a top 3-5 QB, but that’s what he’s going to have to be to even come close to justifying what they did.

When you give up three first rounders and give him a record breaking guaranteed deal that will haunt your cap for years if he doesn’t work out…

Gotta be a lot of nervous people around the Browns HQ right now.

Maybe he goes next level this season, I don’t think he’s a bad QB, but I can’t see how he ever lives up to what they gave up/gave him.
It reeked of desperation.
He absolutely was a top 5 elite QB for the Texans. Any metric has him just below Mahomes/Rodgers during his time in Houston.

The last time the Browns owned the Steelers I was just a kid in the late 80s.

So I don’t have any real animosity towards their fans, and most of them are just like us anyway outside of fandom.

So a part of me will feel empathy, but I’ll just hit Twitter and not feel too badly anymore.

Only reason I'm into it. I got talked into doing a work fantasy football league back in the UK to make up the numbers. Once I started to know players I got into watching redzone when it was on at my in-laws, then I got into watching games when it was on...

... my big breakthrough moment was at the Steelers bar in Rome though, and watching a replay of a game with all the time between downs removed, and realising it was an exciting game once it didn't stop every 10 seconds.

Also, on contrasting the culture around the NFL, NHL, other sports... the crowd I talk to tailgating outside Heinz Field feels a lot like the crowd I'd talk to at Shales or Milanos before a Pens game. I'd agree the relative rarity of football brings out more of a party element in general, but it's the same sort of people at games.

Obviously the make up of sports fandoms that can't go to games are a bit different for both...

Anyway.

Watson being rusty for the Browns is pretty concerning for them at this point.

I also love how their lineman were complaining about cheap shots from Eagles players in practice. One, because it's funny. Two, I'm wondering if he's going to be one of the players that the refs don't protect all that much.

Your story is why I think it’s kind of crazy when “hardcore” fans scoff at people who are just into fantasy football or betting. The rise of fantasy and betting and whatever is a really good thing I think. You get new fans and the league makes a shit ton of money.

Tbf, I'm somewhat atypical as in not American. I dunno how many people this side of the pond are going to be exposed to football their entire lives, not like it, then change their minds later due to fantasy football. It's a fantastic growth tool outside of the US though.

I'm also very uncomfortable with sports being so closely entwined with something as addictive and potentially ruinous as gambling fwiw.

Maybe you’re right, but he’s not a guy I’d take a look at over a five year span and consider him a top 5 elite Qb.

You have to produce playoff wins, not excuses, much like what we are seeing with LJ right now.

Well, its not like any other QB would have done more in Houston. What he did with what he had was impressive. He had Dhop, but the rest of the roster and coaching was pretty bad.

He's a terrible person and should be easy for everyone to root against and hope to fail. Don't really understand the trade from just a moral and locker room standpoint, but Browns gonna Browns.

We don’t really know what another QB would have done, but I highly suspect a true elite QB would have squeezed more than one playoff win out of those teams.

Browns mgmt trying to sell the trade to women was basically a big FU to all of them.

Why they did it isn’t a mystery though:

Pure desperation.

Kind of a sad full circle they passed on Roth, who had his own brush with sexual assault accusations for Da Soldier, who is in jail for rape and other horrific sexual crimes agt women.

It is a really cool city - even my girlfriend as we were walking around she said, "this place is way trendier than I thought it would be" and we travel a ton. We will be back, for sure.

Being from Pittsburgh and having my entire family for generations from Pittsburgh, I love Eastern European food. It is shockingly hard to find it in Pittsburgh outside of church things a couple of restaurants that consistently do it and a few more that have infrequent specials. We went to the North Market and I went ham at the Polish stand. I also know Schmidt's is a tourist trap but the food was really good there too.

I went to college in Erie for a period of time and it's a perfect mixture of Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo fans. Being in that environment you either grow an affinity towards a fanbase (Buffalo) or your disdain just increases further (Cleveland).

I went to University of Dayton and had a bunch of friends from Cleveland, including two of my roommates.

One of them was actually a Steelers fan, as his dad was from Pgh but moved to Cleveland.

I haven’t spoken to them in awhile because that’s how life goes, but they were all good fam.

When it comes to pro sports Columbus really is an interesting city simply because Ohio State is the defacto pro sport in the city despite being a Univerairy. Even though Cincinnati is closer to Columbus than Cleveland is you’ll see more Browns fans than Bengals fans. Granted with Burrow and the Bengals being on the uptick it’s becoming more equal but, the Steelers are incredibly popular here in town as are the Pens. And like @Double-Shift Lasse said, there’s so many transplants from the Ohio Valley and Tri-State area (which my entire family comes from, Wheeling, WV area) it only makes sense. Glad you liked it here in Columbus when you visited.

THere seems to be a huge contingent of PIttsburghers that go to the University of Dayton and I've been trying to put my finger on the why.

My father went there, not sure why to be honest, so that put it on my radar.

I was awarded a scholarship there, so that basically sealed the deal.

There were kids from Cali, Chicago and all across the US, but a bulk were from western Pa and the large majority naturally across Ohio.

I loved it there though… beautiful campus, with ivy growing on the buildings and the all around studious aesthetics.

Interesting. I actually made a comment not long ago to my girlfriend as we were out and about throughout the city after I had seen 4 different college aged kids wearing Dayton gear. It just seemed like such a random school for a bunch of WPA kids to go to, but there is apparently a draw.

Ya there is, but I never really thought about it to be honest.

I don’t have a Yinzer accent, so a few of my friends there didn’t know I was from Pgh when I first got to UD.

They told me they could usually pick out the Pgh kids because they didn’t understand anything they said.

I assumed it was hyperbole, but definitely got the joke.

My wife is Canadian so when I first started dating her, watching her try to carry a convo with someone who had a true Yinzer accent was hilarious.

Does anyone know a way to watch this game if you don’t live in the PGH or BUF area? It’s not on NFLN…

NFL+ carries all the pre-season games.

You can watch on a smart phone or tablet.

They have a seven day free trial - last time I checked.

I said it before KP was drafted.

The NFL becomes too subject to fads and group think.

Not that there was not truth underlying those biases.

But it blinds them to what is really important.

Today's NFL favors athletic quarterbacks. It is one more thing for defenses to worry about. And a rocket for an arm to boot. Who wouldn't want that in their quarterback?

But reads and accuracy are what makes a great quarterback.

KP is athletic. Not Lamar Jackson athletic but above average. Has decent arm strength.

But his quick accurate reads are off the chart.
