Elite defense. Hired an actual smart mind as an assistant in Jim Schwartz instead of some random stooge like Feekner or Keef Butler. Myles Garrett likely DPOY (sorry but it’s true).

Perfect response, but Garrett should not be DPOY.

And the Browns should have lost the past couple of weeks:

- vs SF they got a few iffy calls for them
- vs Indy the refs really screwed the pooch with those PI/Illegal Contact calls

Clev is living on borrowed time just like the Steelers. We could each easily be 2-4

Hey, let’s not lose our heads here. We have no idea which way the season will swing, but pretending Garrett has better stats or more impact than Watt is just a slur.

Watching him closely last Sunday, I saw something......I'm not sure how to categorize it.

He stands with his arms limp and his hand flared on each side away from his hips. Not sure if this helps/hurts, means he's weak or maybe it's ideal for coverage. It just struck me as weird, something I've never seen before.

He still does get a bit grabby for my liking, but man he plays guys tight. When they say a DB plays in a guys hip pocket...Porter plays in their jock strap.

That sounded bad, but my point is made.

Per PPG:
In the first half of six games this season, Pickett has completed 33 of 60 attempts (55%) for 320 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. His passer rating in the first half is 65.97. In that time, the Steelers offense has produced just three touchdowns.

But that all changes after halftime. That’s when Pickett transforms into a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback who looks as though he has played 18 seasons, not started 18 games.

He has completed 62 of 90 attempts (68.8%) for 749 yards with two touchdowns and just one interception. His passer rating in the second half is 96.9. In that time, the Steelers have scored five offensive touchdowns.

This is why I blame Canada.

This morbid first half offense has been going back all the way to Canada’s first year when the Steelers set that 84 year old franchise record for first half futility (5 games 0 points).

Think of how bad those Steeler teams were before Noll, and how points were scored in that era, and yet no Steeler team was ever that bad until Canada came along.

Let that really stew around in your head…

Tomlin alluded to once again getting looks they weren’t prepared for to start the game.

He even admitted earlier this year he wants to see Canada making faster adjustments in the first half.

It‘a not rocket surgery to figure out what the issue is.

From YT comment

***********

Issues highlighted:
1.) Pass protection issues out of the gate!
  • No hot routes
  • Kenny missing free runners
  • System
2.) Accuracy and timing issues
  • Missed windows due to holding on to the ball or not trusting his eyes
  • Poor accuracy on throw to Jorge and DJ
3.) Happy feet with solid pocket.
4.) Not feeding Jorge enough.
5.) Plenty of flowers to be handed out as well.

Kenny's happy feet are kind of funny because it was the same thing at Pitt. Once he gets comfortable, they go away. It's almost a blatant tell that he is rattled. There is going to come a time where patience pays off with Kenny. It took him a while at Pitt and it may take him a while here also. Like I have said before, I think we are bound for an awkward 5th year showdown with him.

Getting into a Daniel Jones type scenario and being stuck with Tomlin would be unbearable as f***.

However, I think they will know before his next deal if he’s the guy or not.

Facing all of this adversity early on isn’t fun to watch, but the bright side is it will either help make him into a really good QB or show they need to move on.

It’s interesting that we are seeing the flip side going on with Purdy now.

People are now questioning if he’s any good or just a system guy created by savant coaching and all the talent around him because he’s finally hit some adversity and not done well.

I feel like he went through major shit with that rare elbow surgery and came back from it, but then again I’m not rooting for him to fail like others.

With Purdy there is just tape now. I'm fully convinced of that. These teams are learning how he works and it is bringing him back to earth a bit. I still think he's a solid QB, but I think Pickett and Purdy are pretty similar actually.

Why I don't get freaked out with Kenny is because we have literally watched this progression with him, and if he can be a pro equivalent to what he was his super senior year at Pitt...we are in really good shape. I think he can get there.

KP’s progression has gone mostly how I thought it would.

I assumed he’d have a losing record by this point and a new OC, but glad that’s not the case.

It was a virtual lock with Tomlin as his coach and Canada around his rookie season things would be rough… I thought Canada would be gone after last season, and he’d have more of a coming out second year under a legit OC.

However when Canada was brought back it was easy to guess how things would go.

All the adversity hasn’t broken him yet.

My daughter has stared that down jumping into AA boys hockey this year and took a bit to get used to the speed, but I told her “the best players don’t fear when the storm comes, they dance in the rain”

That’s 100% what KP is doing.

I legitimately believe KP would be infinitely better if he utilized play action.

Pickett would look good in a real pro offense with an OL he trusts.

Going after Surtain would be a mistake when the OL is desperate for talent. They legitimately need to replace the entire right side and the C. Giving away picks for a CB who would be a luxury seems shortsighted. The type of move that would set the offense back years and doom a young QB.

Purdy is not a system QB. Jimmy G didn’t look this good. Tray Lance couldn’t beat him out. People seem to forget that even Tom Brady and Peyton Manning didn’t become GOATs until well into their career, 5+ years in. He’s legit. Won’t be the last time he has a rough couple of weeks.

I think Purdy is a system QB because he's always been one. He is tailormade for SF and Shanahan and they could very well be the next Brady-Belichick. Purdy is talented, but he is not without his flaws. The thing with Purdy, and this dates back to his college days, when teams allow him to find rhythm, it's over for them. You have to attack him and when you do, he gets very rattled. Shanahan is asking him to take what he's given and he's really good at that.

Everyone on the offense would benefit from play action. Najee is running into 8 man boxes. Pickett is throwing with 7 man rushes. It's crazy to even believe they have been as successful as they have been.

They simply need a sense of urgency to take an early lead. This lack of energy goes all the way back to the latter of Ben's career. The only time the offense gets tempo is when their losing by at least 2 scores or in the 4th qtr trailing.

Nothing I’ve seen from Purdy indicates he’s reliant on the system for success. Every QB is asked to do certain things within an offense, it’s their effectiveness at execution that matters. Purdy reads and releases at an advanced level for a 2nd year QB. He’s only going to get better.

I really can’t think of a QB that’s ever played that didn’t struggle if they were knocked out of rhythm or pressured consistently. Manning, Brady, Rodgers, even Ben could have awful days if they couldn’t get going. It was just often difficult to do.

Saw somewhere that basically said "Tomlin seems to approach games like rope a dope. They take their opponents' best punches early and hang in there until the end of the game"

Interesting analogy

Yeah, except Ali only rope-a-doped Foreman. He didn't play around against Joe Frazier or Norton or Ernie freakin Shavers

What have you seen? Because he has played in a ridiculously systematic offense at Iowa State, and he's probably playing in the most systematic offense in the NFL right now. Me saying he is a system QB has way more validation than you saying he isn't. He's very, very intelligent and that was said through the entire draft process. That is why he is as successful and how he beat out stiff competition in SF. I'm not knocking the dude, but there isn't any shame to say that he found a perfect spot that set him up for success and is letting him be the best form of himself as a player. It's not a knock. Montana and Young were honestly system QBs too. HOFers.
