Staley instead of Bettis, who was incredibly inefficient, helped.

But there were no indications that the 2003 Steelers were a juggernaut in waiting. Cowher wanted to draft OL instead of Ben, so clearly he thought some things needed cleaning up.

Ben unlocked the team.

To say "the team could comfortably draft a QB because they knew Deshea Townsend was better than Chad Scott" is uhhhhh, something. Or that they knew James Farrior would be an All Pro.

How about we evaluate positions we can improve. If QB is one of them (it is), let's talk about upgrading it.
I missed what the original argument was about, I was just responding to that the 04 Steelers were not stacked. I wouldn't have an issue with them drafting a QB, but I wouldn't want them to spend a first unless they get a high pick and a good player available. I don't want them spending the 13th pick to get the 5th best QB- that's not a good use of resources.

But rookie Roethlisberger was just along for the ride, he didn't unlock anything. And then blew it in both playoff games.

Rookie Roethlisberger was considered the 3rd best QB in his draft class. As was Mahomes. Lamar Jackson was the 5th QB in his.

Someone else mentioned Purdy. Well, the 49ers moved heaven and Earth to get Lance who ended up being a huge bust. Hasn't slowed their roll at all.

I get the perspective that we should strengthen the team outside of QB.

The Steelers were also 3rd in the league in Y/A passing in 2004. Ben was not used heavily and not incredibly efficient, but he made the opposition respect the big play against. That opened things up in the running game.

Maybe another team can give the Steelers the best O-lineman in the league for free and they can be like the 49ers too. But the situation that rookie Roethlisberger was in was very similar to Purdy. The rest of his team was so dominant he often was throwing to wide open guys. They would have been successful with a lot of guys.

I don't really care what these things say.
Harris is a name and a story. Which is unfortunately why we took him.
But he is closer to Benny Snell than a franchise RB, and if he wasn't a 1st rounder he would be fighting it out with McFarland.
He lacks vision, quickness, and runs too upright. He struggles to fall forward (one of his very worst attributes).
He just isn't good.
2nd in the league in yards after contact 4th in the league in runs over 20 but sure

The Steelers had plenty of those exact same teams in the 90s (dominant running team and dominant D) and never won a SB.

It’s not a coincidence they finally won their first SB in 25 yrs right after Roth came along.

So no, they wouldn’t have been successful “with a lot of guys”, because we already saw what that looked like (disappointment and frustration).

Losing his job to a UDFA.

I think our offensive line needs to be better, but it's also a position where fans are exceedingly hard on their own team.
Like today the line was very clean in pass protection and people are still claiming how they played is an issue.

If we're waiting for a line that our fans deem worthy, we better invest all of our draft capital into the position in 2024 and 2025.

I love Mark Madden. To all you simpleton rubes still defending this potato QB - please do yourself a favor and listen to what the super genius is saying. The super genius had the Steelers winning! And also still thinks Pickett sucks! This is the way. This win has done more damage than good.

Side note for anyone along the Madden line who cares (doubtful): if you’re looking for a good EPL team to follow a la PSU: Liverpool FC. They’re akin to PSU in the sense that they’re superior to a vast majority of teams they play, W’s most weekends, lots of fun and you get to maintain superiority over tons of inferiority teams. This ain’t Pitt where losses are commonplace! Just join us. #LFC #YNWA #WeAre

Jesus Christ please go get therapy.

I want to believe this is a bit but I think we all know it isn't.

It is a coincidence.

Roethlisberger and his 123 passing yards and 2 INTs was able to win the super bowl, but I'm supposed to believe that O'Donnell wouldn't have been able to in the same situation?

Roethlisberger was terrible in that game, but outstanding leading up to it. He destroyed the Broncos in the AFC championship game. Played a near-perfect game.

We won that SB because of a trick play, a Willie Parker run and some favorable officiating.

I legitimately haven't watched a Pitt football game in years

They suck. I went to school there but they suck.
Thanks for admitting the truth, I don’t blame you. Give it two weeks and PSU hype will soon consume you after they beat Ohio St and the potato Steelers lose to the Rams.

(And Pitt is… 1-5? LMAO. Even WVU is going 10-2 this year!)

Yeah, a Madden team recommendation is like an anti-endorsement. It's like telling me that Putin or Harvey Weinstein likes Liverpool and hoping I'll take interest.

One guy will be in the HOF and the other will remain one of the most hated QBs in Yinzer land, despite having played on teams built almost identically.

Anyone with a brain can figure out why.

But can’t use logic with one of the resident Roth haters, so why bother?

Warren better stop fumbling he is not even trusted to get 10 carries a game but sure he is taking Naje job. Its a 2/1 split and people say tomlin ran bell into ground so having warren as the 3rd back helps

If Najee ever averages 4 yards a carry for a season in the NFL, please let me know.

Tom Brady, arguably the greatest QB of all time, was what? A seventh round pick?

Which certainly proves that you should never pick a quarterback higher than a seventh round pick.

Arguably?

But yeah, first you need 5 1st rounders at offensive line and established but frustrated weapons. Then you need to somehow finish 4-12 with all of that. Then you get your quarterback. This is the way of things.

Freirmuth is in his 3rd year and he is severely lacking about 15lbs of muscle. Unless he hits the gym soon, he'll never add up to much.
He puts on 15 pounds of muscle, he's not going to be nearly as explosive. Freiermuth is basically at the very bottom of our worries right now. The only worry is why he isn't seeing the ball way more.

Lance isn't a bust, IMO. Lance is legitimately what people said he was. He needed YEARS of sitting. He played nearly no college football. He's in a great spot now.

He has 2 recorded fumbles in his career. I really don't think that's enough to start taking carries off of a guy who has looked better than RB1
