Sproles was 190 lbs.

Dante Hall was 190.

Wes Welker 185 lbs.

Austin is 20 lbs lighter than the lightest guy here. He is honestly one of the smallest NFL players in recent memory. There's a reason guys his size wash out into the arena league. If he has hopes of getting a deal past his rookie, he needs to master the Edelman dive.

Right and you're assuming a 4th round pick will never gain another pound. He just had a year off. If he is between 175-180, he will be fine. At the combine he weighed in at 170. What helps him is the league is trending on the lighter side. MLBs are in the 230 range now, instead of the 260 range. Emmanuel Forbes is going to be a 2nd round pick and he's 163 pounds at corner.

To completely write a guy off because of his size, especially in the league today, is a stupid thing to do, especially when the guy can run in the 4.2's and he's really difficult to hit.

Yeah I didn’t bring these guys up

Okay this is just getting stupid. The guy has a tiny frame. All the speed in the world doesn’t matter if you can’t take a hit and a guy his size is going to struggle with that flat out. He was a 4th rounder for a reason.

Even if he managed to add 10 lbs he’s still very small. He and the team will have to work extra on keeping him away from major contact.

Hasnt stopped Hollywood brown or devonte smith or deshaun jackson before them.

Looking at last seasons top 10 Punt Returners in usage gets you 6 guys under 175lbs with the lightest at 158. Seems silly to argue there's not risks for a guy his size but NFL teams run them all the time.

There’s a risk for anyone back there, but Austin had over 2700 scrimmage yards in college - it’s pretty silly to suggest he will implode when someone hits him.

You don’t handle the ball that much without taking a bunch of shots.

The concern should be about his foot injury and hoping he hasn’t lost any explosiveness.

Pretty silly to think he’s going to implode from one hit. But college is not the NFL. He will not have a long career if he isn’t protected

Really wish we could get above the redskins, I hope they don't screw us over. I'm hoping we move up and get the stud offensive tackle Johnson. Johnson or Jones I'd be thrilled.

JFC it doesn’t have to be a 5 page debate. He’s small. Maybe he’ll be more sproles. Maybe more Dri Archer. (I know a rb). Maybe he’ll implode upon contact. Nobody knows.

People are clutching their pearls about Austin for some reason. He's small. He's most likely not going to have a long career. The handful of exceptions we've seen in the league are just that.

Have you ever hit someone before? If a guy is that fast and shifty, getting a clean lick on him is really, really difficult. Now if he's standing on the tracks and gets blind sided by Ray Lewis, is he going to feel it? Sure.

He has a small frame, but having a small frame doesn't necessarily preclude that the player is going to be injury prone or will get killed. Jake Guentzel is a great example of this - he's small and very skinny, but he's muscular and knows how to take a hit. Austin for being 165 pounds threw up 225 12 times, so I'd venture to guess he's a pretty strong guy.

He played major college football where he was a major target and he never had an issue. If anyone's concerns are silly at this point, they are yours. The league is trending smaller, which works in his favor.

Y’all forget about Stefan Logan? Dude was a great returner for several years and was 5’7 170ish.
There are a ton of guys who have been small and experienced success. 165, 175, 185...in the NFL it's basically all the same - you're undersized. Back in the day Dante Hall, though playing around 185, when linebackers were 260, and the rules were different, he still produced.

Sauce Gardiner said Austin was the most difficult receiver he covered. If Sauce can't get hands on him, I'm not sure who else can. Austin has had to find a way to not allow his size to be a detriment to his career, and he's done a great job of doing so thus far. At the end of the day, when a guy runs a 4.2 and can cut the way he (hopefully still) can, you're looking to just get a hand on him, not lay a lick.

Strength doesn't have much to do with it. Lots of very strong guys have durability issues. The issue is just greater for him because he's the size of a HS sophomore.

There are NOT a ton of small players who have made it. There are SOME small players who carved out niche roles for a SHORT TIME. Return specialists mostly. Almost no one has had a long career as a key wide out. It hasn't happened because they just get beat up. Acting as if Dante Hall is the same when he was 20-25 lbs heavier is just insanity.

Austin has done nothing good or bad (and first needs to make sure he doesn’t go the way of Senquez Golson) so idek what anyone is arguing here because we haven’t seen him play NFL ball.

It's not hard to find lighter WRs lasting a long time. 2 of the current top 25 active receiving yards leaders were 175 lbs or lighter.

If we phrase it as lbs per inch, talking in terms of how much padding his bones have, Austin's sturdier than Antonio Brown and Tyreek Hill (and a good few others).

Although, really, who cares if he's not going to have a long career? He's got three years left on his rookie contract. The odds of him being a Steeler a long time after that are real low. The only way it matters is if he's like Tyreek Hill mk2, and if you get Tyreek Hill mk2 off of a 4th rounder that's a win even if he flames out after a year or two.
