You shouldn't feel upset about it because he would really transform the defense. He's a slot corner, but he's another Minkah and he's phenomenal in run support. I have seen people clamor for guys who will probably not have much of an impact their rookie year because they have so much to work on.

The two guys that I think the Steelers could draft defensively and they would both change the complexion of the defense and be immediate difference makers are Branch and Mazi Smith.

I’m a huge fan of Mazi Smith at 32. They need a 0-tech and the guy is a run stuffing monster. Whenever I run the mock draft simulators he is the obvious pick at 32.

And I know they like him as the Steelers top brass visited Michigans pro day.

Not sure they should use a pick that high on a two down guy. Guess you can form a good debate around it, but I suspect there will be a more logical BPA there than Smith.

Do we take this to suggest they’re ok with Moore and Chuks or maybe that one of them could be out if we draft a guy or none of the above let’s just see what happens?

I've always found this to be the best.

Smith has the ability to be an every down player. He's an athletic freak for his size, and he could probably get even more athletic if he dropped 10-15 pounds. He's probably the strongest guy in the draft, and if he could get down to 320, he'd be even more athletic.

Even aside from pushing the pocket, having someone to stop all of these teams running all over us every game, we need to find a run stuffer.

EDIT: So at Michigan he was 335-340. He weighed in at the combine at 323...so he's already lost those 15 pounds.

Ya, a case can be made why they should take Smith at 32 if he’s there, but I’d have to see who they take at 17 and who is available before I’d feel like he was the BPA.

If they take a corner at 17 and Anton Harrison is there at 32, I’d much prefer him than Smith.

Protecting KP should be priority #1 in this draft. Who cares about stopping the run when your QB is on IR is the way I look at it.

looks like if we get Bud to go with all these other signings, we have a really good setup for the draft.

Even OT being a big need is a little less since our inside guys are better and we’ll probably be run heavy this season.

I still want OT and CB though.

Steelers had a top 10 run defence last year. Their third DL played 27%, 56%, and 30% of the snaps in the last three games of last year. That 56% was vs the Ravens with a second string QB... or, to put it another way, about as pure a "nevermind the pass, stop the rush" situation as you'll find left in the NFL.

To me, that doesn't scream a giant need for a NT. It says this team spends most of its time in nickel, and that any NT either needs to be able to legit get after the QB hard (enough to be used as a just straight DT in the rotation spelling Cam and Ogunjobi), or should be a jumbo sized DE who can kick in and fill when needed.

Now, yeah, Mazi Smith could be a little bit special thanks to his athleticism and be a true three down NT but based on his sack counts in college, he's got so much to learn there.

Jordan Davis, probably the freakiest NT prospect in a while, started 26% of the Eagles' snaps. I'm not sure we should expect Mazi Smith to be any different.

And I've got a real hard time seeing that as a 32nd choice pick when you're probably gonna have guys like Benton and Dexter available at 49 (or even the 3rd) and some real high end choices dropping out of the 1st at 32. Maybe even Branch.

Think it's fairly common to see 4 OTs on starting day 53s from the Steelers. 3 out of the last 5 years.

Yeah I was going to say the Steelers only have 2 tackles on their roster before signing Clark, so they need some depth there.

They have a shitload of guards on the roster right now. They only have Clark, Moore Jr and Okorafor as tackles but they have Green, Dotson, Daniels, Seumalo, Herbig and Dunkle as guards right now. I think that position imbalance between those two suggests the Steelers are still going to add more to their OTs at the draft.

Valid point. Only thing that I would caution is how much was their gameplan necessitated by our inadequacies v. what the opposition was doing?

In 2021, NFL teams in general spent 23% of their snaps in base and about 74% in nickel or dime. It's not just this team, it's everyone.

I feel like the only way this team starts using a NT a lot is if they switch to doing a lot of 5-1-5, like the Eagles ran. Which considering their moves at ILB, may be coming.

And Mazi is perfect for that "amoeba" defense or whatever they are calling it. I have a hard time envisioning our current defense in a defense like that though. I do plan on reading more about the intricacies of it.

Think of it as a 3-4 with one of the middle linebackers dropping back to be a defensive back, I think. Given how much of the time we spent playing with one ILB and Terrell Edmunds helping out, it smells possible.

I like Mazi and would like to get him, but I am not expecting an immediate impact and would like to get him at a draft spot that reflects his college production and floor rather than his ceiling. Which probably means we don't get him, but I feel good that the 2nd and 3rd rounders can net some real good value that way.

My fav thing I've seen about the Steelers draft

Tomlins big board:

1. Played in Virginia
2. From Virginia
3. Played or from a state next to Virginia
4. Has family in Virginia
5. Can find Virginia on a map
6. All others

Can we all take a moment of laughter for Jackson's trade request
Why maybe it forces the ravesn to settle for a 1st and 3rd after the draft.
He doesn’t have to sign his tag until week 10 to get service time. Do you think the ravens will tag him again next off season or let him walk for nothing.
Washington Colts Atlanta Jets should be all in on lamar after the draft. If i was Houston i would be interested in lamar after the draft instead of CJ or Young

If the thought of Baltimore trading their franchise QB for a 1st and a 3rd doesn't give you a happy moment, I don't know what to say.

Although I doubt that happens. They're not going to trade him just because he asks. He's going to need to throw a major strop. If he does, the ask will be huge. They'll 99% tag him again if needs be.

But whatever happens, this looks bad for the Ravens, and I'm enjoying that.

Yeah i am looking forward to the Bell like holdout where he signs week 10 and gets hurt dares them to tag him again or him pulling a Ramesy in Jacksonville with his back until he was traded.

If i am the colts Washington jets Atlanta i am offering him 200 million fully guaranteed the Monday after the draft
