He seems decent enough and is probably an upgrade over Spillane and Bush. The price shouldn’t be too high seeing some of the other deals handed out.

It gives them a little draft flexibility too which is important.

From what I remember from watching him a couple yrs ago, he’s like someone fused Spillane and Bush together.

Way more athletic than Spillane, but much bigger than Bush, while still not being ideal size.

I know he was pretty good agt the run, but pass coverage I can’t rem, which is obviously an Achilles heel of this D.

He wasn’t on my radar of guys they should sign… I didn’t even know he was a FA.

From what I’ve been reading, it seems like he’s not the best in coverage. It seems like his issues are basically the opposite of Spillane — athletic enough to keep up with guys but doesn’t always know where he’s supposed to go.

Doesn’t look like a bad signing though. I’d rather have a Bush/Spillane fusion than have both of them. I’m guessing they’ll go after someone like Simpson in the draft still.

Interesting off-season so far. Peterson was a bit of a different signing from what Colbert usually did because of the age. You can see Weidl's influence already with Herbig being brought in (Weidl had him in Philly). Larry O being brought back helps the D-line. Love getting Kazee back. He was one of those free agents that came in and just seemed to fit the defense perfectly. Don't know much about Cole Holcomb but he's been a starter and it fits the old Colbert philosophy of keep plugging all the holes on the roster so you can get to the draft with a starter at every position and just take the best player available.

Really like this pickup. Had a nice 21 season and was on track for like 130+ tackles last year before he got hurt.

I guess with his athletic ability at least he can learn pass coverage, rather than it being a limitation thing like with Spillane.

Of course all that athletic ability never helped Bush so, who knows.

He’s an upgrade on those two at least, so they have improved themselves, maybe not substantially, but better is never bad.

Yeah it’s been a pretty decent free agency so far. There hasn’t been a major add that I was kind of hoping for, but they’ve been filling out the roster pretty well. And I think by the end of free agency, their roster will be slightly better than it was to end the season.

I’m still hoping to see Edmunds re-sign and maybe a NT addition, but I think they’re setting themselves up pretty well for the draft.

Loving the idea of Nolan Smith at 17 more and more now. I think he’s got the talent and upside of a first rounder, I think you also knock out backup EDGE and off ball LB in one pick.

Him or a move up for an OT are kind of what I’m hoping for right now.

On the money

Damn, I remembered it was crazy high despite the lack of size, but top 75 for Lbs since '87? Didn't know that.

So lack of athletic ability is certainly not an issue for him like it was for Spillane.

Bush had above a 9 RAS and ran a 4.4 right? Something like that. I think his agility scores were slightly higher as well. Overall not a huge difference in their RAS unless I'm off about where Bush scored.

So basically they got a bigger, smarter version of Bush.

My commanders friends and coworkers don’t like the loss of Holcomb for what it’s worth.

Seems like a better Spillane.

I think he takes thumpers like Campbell almost completely off the board for us.

He dropped in the draft because he wasn't considered a thumper I think.

Almost positive the knock on him was strength and lack of aggression. Liked to chase S2S and stay at the second level.

Only saw him in half a dozen NFL games, which doesn't mean much, but he had no trouble with the run.

Edit: Someone earlier said he wasn't bad in pass coverage, which they were right. From PFR:

Holcomb allowed 135 completions on 180 targets for 1205 yards and 8 touchdowns for a passer rating of 100.35 over his 4 year career.

So that's a slightly better career PR than Jack and Bush.

Not exactly a solution for pass D, but again slightly better isn't ever bad.

I think Smith's said he just wants to be an Edge. I like the idea of a combination player, but would look at Drew Sanders there instead. Will be intrigued as to who they send to how much attention they pay to him, as there were a ton of Steelers people's at Clemson's pro day (i.e. Trent Simpson).

I’m sure he does based off the pay discrepancies/injury risk for the positions. He might be too small for a full time edge role though. I guess it’s up to the guys with boots on the ground to vet if he’d actually have a problem with being a chess piece. If he does then oh well- and I guess we’ll never know as fans.

I love Sanders, optimally at 32 but ok with him at 17. He could absolutely bust hard though.

Simpson I’m not as high as Sanders but still like. They probably were there for Breese and Murphy too.

Branch makes a shitload of sense now. I think I debated JTG on him. Would prefer BPA/boundary CB but with Cam out of the fold and Peterson in he’s a glaring positional fit.

(I still wouldn’t fully understand doing Peterson + Branch compared to Sutton + top outside CB though)

The Clemson pro day involved the most talent by far of the pro day's from yesterday. Bresee, Murphy, Simpson are potential 1st round picks, then they got a chance to look at some of the other players.

And Today is Georgia. Thus an easy 1.5 hr car ride from Clemson to Georgia.

Basically, they weren't going to go anywhere else.

I still don’t think they go mlb before 49 unless they trade down from 32. It’s probably Cb 17 or DE and then DE/cb 32

I know there's a lot of reasons for them to go to Clemson and I'm not saying they're zeroed in on Simpson, but they got a ton of eyes on him and did have dinner with him. They've done their homework. Whether they do it with Sanders or Smith will be interesting.

Also apparently Tomlin was the only HC there, and Khan the only GM apart from the Panthers guy.

Yeah no way of knowing for sure and I agree it sounds like he should look at being willing to move inside, but good reason to doubt it.

Also Peterson + Branch (or whoever) vs Sutton + Outside CB - depends what the cap hit difference is. Might be the difference is Holcomb's cap hit.

Add offensive line to the above. Unless there is a huge run on offensive line I doubt that they wait until the end of round two for one.

But likely one of those three positions in at least two of their three first and second round picks.

Their FA signings have at least made them not have to reach on the pick. Though they still might. Because that is how they roll.

I'm not super familiar with Holcomb but I do feel he is a big upgrade over Spillane and Bush. Way more athletic than Spillane and more active than Bush. He called the defensive plays in Washington so he is someone that the coaching staff trusts. Nice signing.

Unless they take a T Herbig is 24 he is like a draft pick. I think they take C of the future on day 3

There is next to zero point taking Simpson to dinner if they're not willing to consider ILB at 32 at least. Ergo, it seems a safe assumption that's not ruled out.

I’m with you on this. I think I want Witherspoon even more now than I did prior to free agency because I think he could play inside as a rookie and then move outside in year 2.

If you take an exclusively outside corner like Porter, you almost need to double dip to find someone that can play in the slot.

Looks like Rodgers confirmed on Pat Mcafee show he's going to the Jets, but its GB holding up deal.

According to Schefter, who is probably hiding in Gutekunst's toilet, Packers want package like Stafford got (which is stupid because he wasn't 39 years old).

So basically couple firsts, third and Wilson?

Really hoping Jets give up that 13th pick because GB doesn't need a LT. They would likely then have 13 and 15.

They were always double dipping at CB. Witherspoon and Wallace are both free agents after this season they will draft another Hilton Sutton type or a safety like branch. I think they keep the 3 safety look

If thats the ask then call lamar and give up 2 1st

Jalen Carter is having an absolutely terrible pre draft process it seems. Apparently he couldn’t finish drills at his pro day because he was so out of shape.

The guys talent is undeniable but he’s not doing himself any favors.
