The two hits that knocked Pickett out were because of Dotson. LG is a arguably a bigger need than tackle and you’re not going to find an upgrade over Moore in FA unless you throw crazy money at Brown.
And even brown got beat a ton this season but maholmes improvised and escaped the pocket to hide it.

Kenny is a play action QB. That's where he did a majority of his damage in college.

we dont do play action tho

Herbig is good news. I don’t think he’s so good he stops them from drafting IOL in the first 4 picks if someone falls in their lap, however. Definitely not signed long enough.

And I would not be upset about that in the least.

If for instance O'Cyrus Torrence falls to 32, I would be fine with them taking him, and I say that even if they went tackle in round one. There is enough depth at defensive back especially, but also LB and defensive line, that they still can nab one in the coming picks. And they can still sign another FA.

The offensive line did improve last year. But that is relative to an extremely low bar set of how fail they were. They never became good. And if they ever want to become good, and keep their QB investment alive, they need to upgrade.

Doesn't read that way to me and I really hope they do something about both positions in FA.

Also honestly my abiding memory of the OL at the end of last season was them running over the Ravens and to me that says good.

I was wrong about LB. There isn't even a first round talent at LB:

Edge rushers strike out on this chart, which is not surprising given that PFF's big board currently features 13 edge rushers in top 50, including seven in the top 32.

On the other side of the spectrum, linebackers shape up to be a fairly weak position in this year’s draft, as it might be completely void of first-round talent with Daiyan Henley currently being the top-ranked linebacker (No. 38) on PFF's big board.

  • 2023 NFL Draft is deep with edge rushers: With 13 edge defenders in PFF's top 50, this year's EDGE class could be one of the best in recent memory.
  • Wide receiver has less blue-chip talent: After a couple years of record-breaking wide receiver classes, this year's group isn't as stacked with Round 1 talent.

Actually they were better at pass blocking they finished 12th.
They need a guard center that gets to the 2nd level in the zone blocking scheme. They did a ton of duo blocking because doctson like foster is a road grader but doctson is slow out of the snap and struggles in pass blocking
Kenny felt pressure that wasn’t there and stepped into sacks like a rookie. He said he struggled with play action and getting under center cause he didn’t do it much in college.

Well this is one of those situations where the eye test doesn't match up with the stats.

Waller to the Giants for a 3rd rounder. It's incredibly how little value legitimate stars have in terms of draft pick compensation in the NFL.

I'd give a 3rd for Waller 10/10 times.

This has always been interesting to me. Way way more value than other sports. I’m guessing because you usually see immediate dividends with NFL draft picks and shelf life of players is shorter. Still seems like someone like Waller should go for more.

This isn't me, but saw this suggestion:

*******************
If it were me, I'd make three roster moves very soon that would put us at close to the top in available cap space in the league.

I would:

Release Myles Jack (Save: $8M)
Release Mitchell Trubisky (Save: $8M)
and
Restructure Minkah Fitzpatrick (Save: $10.065M)

Giving us close to $34M in NFL team cap space. Taking us from our current 28th spot to the 4th spot -- only behind SF, CHI and ATL.

Both Jack and Mitch's production could easily be replaced for a small portion of that $16M savings.

ILBs: Wagner, David, Evans($3m), Tranquill($3m) or White($4m)
QBs: Rush($2m), Mariota, Dalton($3m), Brissett($3m), Dobbs($2m), Bridgewater or Minshew($3m)

Of course, I would do all of this in a way that allows me to keep my negotiating power throughout the process of signing FAs.

If done correctly, you could still have enough left over to fill SS1($3.5m), ILB2/3($2.5m), CB 4/5($2m), EDGE 3/4($2m), DL 3/4($3m), WR 5/6($2m) and RB3($2m).

This would allow you to focus on a few key positions in the draft (where it might be deep too). CB, OT, TE, WR, ILB, DL, EDGE, etc.

he didnt play much last season

Something could still happen, but more and more ILBs are coming off the board in free agency. So it really seems like their plan is to do something simple like bring back Spillane and then address the position early in the draft.

If that ends up being the plan, I can’t say I’m a huge fan of spending an early pick on a LB in a weak class instead of using it to address some other areas. Especially when it seems like it would have been pretty cheap and easy to improve in free agency.

Who knows though. We’ll see what ends up happening.

Idle thought - anyone else wondering whether they're gonna keep Highsmith now?

To me it went as given when you looked at how much value they put on keeping their own. But Sutton just got given a fair pay day for what he's done and they didn't match.

At which point, why not Highsmith too? He's gonna be expensive. He's not a product of Watt, but his totals are going to look higher than his talent levels due to playing with him... and therefore his pay day. And if they're willing to let go of Sutton in a similar position, why not Highsmith?

I think position plays a huge impact in the difference. I believe they'll definitely re-sign Highsmith

Factors:
- EDGE has a higher value than CB's in the Steelers' mind
- In this offseason there were readily available replacements at CB in FA and draft

He's impactful. There are better odds he's more impactful than the 3rd rounder.

And for people who think DJ would return a king's ransom...he wouldn't.
Impactful sure. However he finished his vegas career 17 td and 3500 yards in 5 years both are less than DJ has done so far. He had 1 season with 9 td

Maybe they go EDGE in the draft and don’t keep Highsmith? To be fair to that bat shit crazy idea, it would be a shit ton of money locked up at one position if they kept him.

I don’t think that any big re-up would go down until camp though IIRC.
