I mean if Trubisky is fine with being the long term backup, I’m totally cool with it. He can be pretty good in a pinch and seems like a really good teammate.

I think I blocked him after our exchange but someone should ask the know-it-all who bullied other posters ITT about his 100% guarantee that Mitch would not be back this coming year.

i suppose they are extending him to lower his cap hit

and then sign somebody

better off just cutting him and rolling with Rudolph as backup

Nothing special about Mitch/Rudoph but that's the stoniest qb corps I can remember since Bradshaw, Gilliam, and Hanratty.

Maybe Mitch got "Pittsburgh'ed." Just had a kid. It's a livable city. He has a chance to win here, and I'd imagine the free agency thing would have been as fruitful for him as it was for Mason. Good just to lay low for a while. He will still see some time. Kenny is bound to get hurt.

I am a bit surprised that Mitch agreed to stick around. Maybe reality is finally starting to set in for him that he's a backup QB in this league and is better off embracing that. Charlie Batch is a good example of a guy that did that here for a long time.

I’m all for keeping him at a reduced cap hit, but I’m a bit surprised he wants to stick around. Didn’t he want to be traded?

I don't think that was ever said. There was speculation he might want to be, but I don't think anything from Trubisky. Only thing he said I remember is that he wished he'd had a better look in FA before signing, which could mean a bunch of things - and even if it did mean "I wish I hadn't signed in Pittsburgh", that didn't mean "and now I'm here I must be out".

I am a little surprised he's doing this as there's a bunch of other orgs that offer either a) better chances to contend for a starter's job b) better chances to win, but I can also understand him opting for stability after the last few years, and he does have a chance at A + B here over the coming years.

I had no issues when Charlie was the backup- he was clearly one of, if not the best backup in the league during his time.

I do not feel the same way about Mitch. I think they should have let him play out his contract and bring in another person the next offseason. Let Mason sit by the phone in case they need him.

Yeah. I get that these guys are competitive and want to play, but it’s gotta be better to be a well liked, stable backup vs a journeyman at least for a while.

Eventually people will forget that he’s not very good and give him another chance.

Tbh, thinking about it, if he wants another starter chance then arguably he's best off here. Yeah, there's more game time on offer chasing those journeymen chances, but they're at crap organisations and the QB has to make it work on the fly. Start of last season was a very good example of that.

Trubisky's next shot with the Steelers is *touch wood* going to be with a good team that he knows well and a far better chance to show out. I also hope he doesn't get many shots over the length of his contract for obvious reasons, but it's a better platform to show what he's capable of. If he can build a body of work that would entice a non-dogshit org to give him a chance, that's his best shot.

But for now, I just hope he enjoys being a mentor to Mr P.

This is not from me, but another message board. Perfectly stated in my mind

Cutting Trubisky would have cost them $2.65M in guaranteed [dead] money, but saved his $8M salary.

But, of course, that is not how PIT does business. So they extend him, which likely makes the vast majority of that $8M guaranteed, but now you've tacked on additional years that may be reasonable (hopefully no guaranteed money).

Doesn't make a lot of sense after signing Rudolph. But I'll wait until I see the full terms of the deal. I think Rudolph is garbage and gives you 0 chance to win a game with his arm. Trubisky might not be good, but every once in a while he can sling it impressively. He gives you a chance to win games you have no chance with Rudolph. On the flip side, Trubisky might be reckless and cost you some games you might win with Rudolph as a game manager.

I suppose it's conceivable that, after signing Rudolph, Trubisky did the math on being cut or even a FA next year....and decided he's unlikely to beat say $16M over 3 years this deal might be worth.

And with both of these deals, PIT has a shot to essentially trade some cap for draft picks if the right opportunity presents itself. Seems a bit of a reach, but until they find a bonafide franchise QB they will struggle to spend their cap. Even if that's Pickett, such a deal is 2-3 years away.

Trubisky isn't really a starting QB in the NFL and probably recognized he wasn't going to get a starting gig this season or next so he stayed somewhere where the guy he's behind is somewhat an unknown commodity and who is developing a concussion history. He's got a better chance of seeing time here than a lot of places.

From the Steelers side, people get so angry over people who are the backup QB's because they don't think they are very good. Trubisky isn't very good, but there are about 20-25 legit starting QB's in the NFL and not many teams have two of them. He's a good QB2.

So many athletes have come to Pittsburgh and stuck around. I am always shocked to hear that a 40 game stint with the Pens saw Lyle Odelein lay down roots here. How much Burnett loves the city is crazy considering how high profile he is and how many big cities he played in. I could honestly see a guy like Mitch looking at his life as a whole and coming to the conclusion that Pittsburgh is just a good spot all the way around for him.

I see this as totally fine? It's good to have a good backup for Pickett and Trubisky's extension shouldn't prevent them from being able to fill any holes they might have on the roster.

I don't know how NFL contracts work, but I imagine this takes his cap hit from $10 million to $6.5 million this year and gives him an additional 2 years at $6.5 million.

They must have a pretty solid relationship in the QB room if both backups were so willing to come back.

Rumors are a decent portion of the cap space is going towards Van Noy, which would be huge for us. We need a good #3 rotational guy for Highsmith and TJ.
