I look at it the opposite way - he just slipped to almost round 5 (if they take him there) after being talked about as a day 1 or early day 2 guy.

Now he knows he can’t take the NFL for granted and he’s not a special snowflake, so he best work hard or he will get thrown on the heap of lost dreams.

… or ya, he eats himself out of the league because he’s lazy.

Not wrong it could be a system shock that gets him going. I don't like betting on people changing tho.

I guess we'll see how the Steelers feel about it but I feel like if they were happy about the odds of him doing so, they'd have taken him ahead of Darnell Washington.

Spoken like someone who's never left an all you can eat buffet doubled over in pain. Keep pushing!

There's still a ton of places this roster can get better. The only position rooms where I'd feel nonplussed about a pick are Guard and Tight End. Guy's gotta keep going.

I guess if he's there at the end of the fourth and all the options I prefer have been cleaned out then yeah. But I'm dubious. I feel like his professionalism and desire must be giant red flags for him to get that far and I'd rather steer clear.
we have just done so well with nothing, i want to see what we can do with some capital.

Honestly with the way the first two days of this draft have gone, I think you can go BPA regardless of position. That’s what you should probably do on day 3 anyway as all these guys now have some flaw or concerns about their game.

I’ll echo what Peat said above that maybe Guard and TE shouldn’t be prioritized, but other than that, I trust Khan’s board.

Wouldn’t hate continuing to accrue depth in the trenches. Maybe take a shot on a backup center or an edge rusher. 4th-5th round is where Brugler had a lot of safeties projected to go, so let’s go dumpster diving there too.

Jeremiah’s BPA: Best prospects available in the 2023 NFL Draft

Lot of names stand out on that list. Ringo, Dawand, Herbig, Freeland. I wouldn’t hate taking a flyer on the RB out of Texas Roschon Johnson. Najee is obviously the guy but he’s been remarkably lucky when it comes to injuries. Johnson has prototype size and is supposedly a beast in pass pro.

Maybe who knows.

Steelers would be taking him in round 5 essentially and they have an impressive history of god awful 5th rounders.

So I’m not too worried about the opportunity cost if they take Jones and he decides to marry a Big Mac.

Ya I wouldn’t call JPJ a reach at 32. Not sure I saw many drafts with him not being picked in the first round.

I’m not going to be angry over the pick as much as I was fearful of it happening - rooting for him to work out but Steelers history with drafting and developing corners is putrid, so he has a lot to overcome if we are being honest with ourselves.

I believe kemoeatu was a guy that was a 2nd rd movk guy that fell to the 6th. Not aure what his issues were to make the fall but that worked out pretty good.

to me the weakest pick would be the nt. he can't play anywhere else and with him being a late riser he must of really impressed someone. to pick him there.

I read he can swing out so not too worried about it.

Anyway back to Washington:

It looks like my 12 yr old daughter trying to cover me in flag football.

Canada literally has to go out of his way to f*** things up in the RZ now.

He will at least be a competent rotational guy. JPJ has a much higher upside but being a CB could be an active negative if he busts ala Burns.

Im still a JPj guy (and that could be PSU bias) but it would dishonest not to admit that if he goes bad it goes real bad

Yeah, Benton should be able to play DE and rush the passer. He didn't do it in College because they liked him as a run stopper but his athleticism should allowed him to do it.

Falale who was pretty much the same size last year went in the 4th as well and didn’t play a snap.

At a certain point, a player can be too big and slow to work in the NFL.
For sure, but once you get do day 3 these guys all have some warts. I just like betting on someone that has an elite trait (size, speed, etc) and then hoping you can coach up the deficiencies rather than taking a middling athlete who has little chance to be an impact player.

These guys are probably depth/special teamers anyway, so why not shoot for the moon?

He was like brand new to football. Jones isn't. It appears the concerns about Jones' work ethic and commitment were very much real.

Once they got Jones, it was already a great draft for me.

You got the nose you were pounding the table for also.

I’m really intrigued by Washington and Canada would have to go out of his way to f*** this up and not have this freak be a massive red zone weapon (air and ground).

Porter is the only pick I have concerns with, but I’m trying to convince myself his freakish arms will make up for his sluggish feet.

I’m taking comfort in the idea that PP, a generational guy, can help Porter clean up his weaknesses and become a #1.

I think you kind of nailed it - this kid is coming into the greatest situation of any situation a rookie player could possibly be in - drafted by his hometown team, his parents still live here, he knows the city, he knows the facility, he knows the ownership group, has a close relationship with the coach, the team is young and on the upswing, and you probably have the best DB of this decade, and a first ballot HOFer across from you in the meeting room. If Porter fails, it's on Porter. Everything is here for him to be a resounding success.

I'm just so excited for this draft, and Khan somehow got picks back in the 4th and 5th round. Unreal job by him. We are in such a good spot, and I'm so happy. We just have to worry about Weidl feeling froggy and jumping ship for his own GM job. I'd hope they'd just pay him regardless.

I wouldn't be surprised if they made modest contributions, wouldn't be surprised if the rookies made big contributions...

... but I think the one thing they will bring in is just a general push up of standards.

Maybe Moore and Okorafor start the season. Maybe they keep helmets for most of it. If they do, if Jones is as advertised and the coaches are sane, it's because the competition has pushed them to play out of their skins. That's a win.

Similarly there's going to be fierce competition for those CB and DL reps, even if they release some guys. Just like how Herbig will push everyone in the IOL.

This team feels deep. There was next to zero competition last summer in training camp. That'll change.

And in any case, in terms of where this team is next season, I'll keep banging this drum: that starts and ends with Pickett's year on year improvement. The work he does with DJ, Pickens, Muth, Harris et al. And we can look forwards to that with some optimism regardless of how kids develop.

Yeah, I think that is the theme of the weekend - optimism. I think we drafted cornerstones. We really needed a draft like this...for a multitude of reasons.

Excuses are out the door. I think the front office has put a team together here, and the coaching staff needs to make it work.

Hearing the Steelers have interest in QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson in Rd 4…could that be true?

That's not a horrible guy to target. That being said, there are so many good guys on the board, that would really be a wasted pick, IMO.

I'd rather bet on elite mental traits than elite physical traits. They're a lot harder to measure and uncover, but they're the ones who get the most out of their talent. It's not like it's hard to find good athletic frames even at this stage either.

And oh look, the Eagles take another Georgia defensive player. Surprise surprise!

Philly bulldogs
Well, we have the offensive guys from Georgia they got all the defensive guys. Both teams are having exceptional drafts.

They gave up what a third from next year? Pretty steep price relative to him being selected in the fourth round. But he should never have gone that late.

Andre Carter is there. That would be a phenomenal project for us. Tons of decent players left.
