The Steelers are going to draft either Willis or Ridder and it’s going to be a mistake lol…
Willis I’m 99.9% sure will be a mistake… Ridder is a different animal altogether.

He is a very polarizing player and I honestly have no clue what to think about him after watching his film.

I’ve seen a number of pundits suggest he could be the best QB of this class, including PFF- but if the Steelers took him I’m not sure how I’d feel.

Of course that’s how I feel about most of the other guys aside from KP.

I'm not saying we should draft an inaccurate guy.

I was responding to the original question which was about "name someone who had accuracy issues in college that became a franchise QB in the pros"

Understand that and I recognize you weren't really defending it.
Sorry if I came off as picking on you.

I watched some of Willis’ pro day and can’t say i was very impressed. The majority of the balls thrown were behind receivers. He also has a tell, he pats the ball before throwing.

It's obviously preferable to draft the next franchise guy that will be here for 15 years, but I wouldn't close the door on going for a late career guy like Manning, Brady, etc. or late-mid career guys like Stafford, Wilson, etc. or guys that get squeezed out like Jimmy G., Tannehill, etc. or a guy that gets to FA for whatever reason like Cousins. There's more than 1 way to skin a cat.

They filled a lot of needs in FA, but they still have some work to do. So I say keep building the team and go with BPA. The time might come where they should reach for a QB in the draft or use their draft capital to trade for a guy. I just don't think that time is now.

Again, do you believe in this coaching staff to develop a QB? I honestly wouldn't trust these guys to plan a 2 car parade

We cannot be drafting "project" QB's

Baker does not seem like a really popular player amongst his peers but I think he’s gotten seriously underrated somehow this offseason. I don’t think he’s great by any means and I don’t blame the Browns for going for an upgrade. But the dude is a decent starter who struggled because of injuries last year. A coach who needs a decent season to save his job should be all over him.
Because baker thinks he is better than he is. He was complaining that they called to many roll outs and play action passes he thinks they should have called more deep balls. His pretty telling when case kenum played in his place last season it looked exactly like the he never left. He doesn’t read the field well at all he doesn’t have the skill set to comeback in the 4th and win the game by himself

I think Ridder's ceiling is an Andy Dalton-esque career. He's bounced around a bit now but for a while he was a playoff caliber starting QB in the league. That's successful even though he didn't win a championship. But Dalton was a second round pick, so I'd feel OK drafting Ridder in round 2 but not in round 1. That's my perspective.

It's hard to know which guys are going to pan out because a lot of that comes from what happens after they get drafted. A scouting report and watching film and an interview only gets you so far. The rest is up to the player - how he learns and applies himself - and the team - offering quality coaching and development. Then you've just plain got some chance on top of all that.

Dak Prescott was a fourth-round pick. He's a good starting QB in the league, although I personally don't think he's a championship QB. So somebody missed something or he applied himself and became better than what might have been expected. Was he hurt a lot his senior year too? Point is, I'm not trying to account for all the variables, just pointing out there are a lot of them.

This entire class is filled with project QBs so are you saying that they should punt on QB

That's what I've been saying since Jan: this is not the class to grab a QB.
Next year is probably a better class.

But this team is going to panic bc of the Haskins situation- book it.

Why does the Haskins unfortunate situation change anything he was going to be the 3rd QB and compete with a camp arm. They want Mitch to start he got the incentives they are comfortable with Mason. I could easily see them see if corral Ridder or Howell fall in round 2 or take EJ brown in round 6

I like how they consider themselves cutting edge by going all in after a QB now...........

Uh, the minute Ben injured his elbow, they should have had this mindset. Hell, even if Ben didn't injure his elbow, his game was declining.

I love how the Media always laughs at the notion of a fan that thinks they could be a GM.... I could GM all 3 Pittsburgh sports at a fraction of the cost to the teams, most likely giving them a better result.

So your saying after the Jacksonville playoff loss they should have moved on? I would say that extension is the one that got us here. Tomlin would have taken Lamar instead of edmunds that year. ESPN did a redraft and gave us Edmunds at 64 instead of Washington. The next season they went 9-6-1 with AB and Juju Ben throws for 5.000 yards.

first try at a mock draft and tbh i think it'll be criticized but these simulators make some weird choices anyway and it's all for fun

pff_mock_results.png

this is one where i fantasize about drafting the "QB of the future" in this draft. PFF's simulator has Pickett rated lower than he probably will go in real life so i said screw it and picked him at 23 after Arizona traded up with me.

Because he was an experienced QB familiar with the offense. 3rd arm or 4th, this team values team experience (for better and worse)

Now you have just 1 QB who knows Canada's system and 2 Qb's overall.

They are going to pick a QB high. You can quote me on this. Prior to the Haskins thing, I thought they'd be smart and grab a DLine but this changes everything.

I don’t think he’s Kent Graham bad and he will keep the Steelers from being a sub 5 win laughingstock, but he isn’t even remotely the answer.

Having him is a catch 22, because he’s basically a Mike Tomczak, Tommy Maddox QB that keeps you running on the hamster wheel of mediocrity.

Don’t forget that Cowher wanted to pass on Roth because he had Maddox… that should frighten people about how close they came to doing something really asinine.

I can 100% see Tomlin being gullible enough buying into Trubisky as his long term guy.

I honestly don't see the correlation.

Cowher had success with mediocre QBs and thought running the ball and playing great defense would be successful. While it was to a certain degree, in the end not having a good QB cost him many times, either in the SB or AFCCG. But it was a huge blindspot for him thus he thought he could just continue with that path. Luckily Mr Rooney saw what was keeping them from ultimate success, a good/franchise QB.

Basically all Tomlin has known is a franchise QB. Why would he think a mediocre QB is the path forward? He is makin lovie-dovie with Aaron Rodgers and yet he wants a mediocre QB?

I think they would take corral Ridder in round 2 but I don’t think they will take either at 20 maybe they trade down and take them getting more picks but it’s a redshirt year for the rookie. They signed mitch on day 1 he will start week 1 and Mason will be the backup the rookie isn’t getting a hat on game day

Tomlin has won games with Mason duck Vick Dixon batch. Ben hasn’t played like a franchise player in the playoffs. Mitch has 2 playoff appearances and a pro bowl and Mason had at least one other team considering him in round 1 and

Tomlin flat out said he doesn’t want to start over with a rookie QB:

Correlation isn’t difficult to see.

If Trubisky has a 2002 Tommy Maddox year and they get in the playoffs, I can see Tomlin riding that mediocre dream like Cowher.

His itinerary this spring shows the opposite of what he told Glazer, so we shall see.

I think you're way too sure about this, and that they didn't do all this scouting and research just to be locked into Trubisky and Rudolph come game day. If they found someone who they think can be the next 15 year guy here and he falls to them, I don't see why they wouldn't rearrange all their plans around giving that guy the best chance to succeed, which probably means promoting them past Rudolph as the backup.
