If the Steelers FO people were smart, and in charge of player personnel decisions (they aren't, Tomlin has been running the show for years), this would be a draft attacking the OL and DL, both great pools of talent in this crop of prospects.
Why?
1. It's easily in the conversation for worst QB class in the last 20 years, on paper. I don't see a single legitimate 1st round talent based on this year's performance other than Pickett and he's a late 1st rounder IMO.
2. The Steelers have weapons. Harris showed he's a borderline, 3 down elite back. Yeah the YPC sucked, but part of that was the disastrous OL play, namely in the run game, and if Harris follows the Bell curve, physically speaking, he'd be wise to trim a few pounds off his body, and gain a step of quickness. DJ had a hellova rebound year. Yeah, late season drops popped up, but the whole season was very good. He's young. JuJu is surely gone but Claypool will be back and hopefully looks more like the rookie version. Patty F had a damn good year at TE and is a legit threat in the receiving game. He's got top 5 TE potential in the league. You could do a lot worse than Pittsburgh in terms of young, cost controlled weaponry.
3. What is missing on offense right now, besides a legit starter at QB? OL talent. This draft has a lot of it. Don't be stupid. You can add in the first 3 rounds, 2 legitimate starting caliber players.
4. Cam Heyward is old, by any standard. We still have no difference maker in the middle of the line, and Tuitt, may or may not come back, and even if he does, can he stay on the field? Having better talent on the DL, especially players who can make a difference 3, 4, 5 years from now, are needed. Cam can't play forever, and your run defense starts in the trenches.
5. Still plenty of quality DB's in FA. Sign 1, hell sign 2. Lord knows Tomlin can't pick a DB to save his life, but hey, what do I know. Only have 15+ years of track record.
Given we traded away multiple mid round picks, I'd love a trade down in round 1, even out of round 1 completely, draft OL, DL, ILB in some combination over the first 3 rounds. Build the damn team through the draft and FA this year, so that after Trubisky has the meh season we all know he will, you theoretically have more talented for a QB in 2023's class, which can't possibly be worse than this years class.
Just because you need a QB doesn't mean you go and waste draft capital in a piss poor draft market.
