Maybe Russ was asking for 3 years $100M (like previously rumored) so they put out the "we're moving on" rumor to get Russ to come back with a lower ask?
Same thing last year. Maybe they put out "We're not interested in Russ" to get him to come in lower? Maybe "we're not interested in Fields" was to lower the Bears ask?
I dunno. I think most of these "insiders' are bozos, so it's just hard for me to believe they are doing investigative journalism and finding sources in the know that are willing to tell them something without their own motive. I think they are deliberately told things for a reason. They report whatever to get along and keep their job at the paper, radio gig, podcast, whatever because without it, nobody would listen to anything they say.
To be fair, I think they can pick up on some things just being around the team. Tensions between Russ-Smith, Pickens being late to games, etc. That stuff I'm more inclined to believe because it's more out in the open and more people are aware of it. But contract negotiations? Free agency plans? How many people in the organization are even aware of that stuff?
I don't think we disagree on how and why sports journalists get their news.
Just since there's a reason, I ask myself the reason when the journalists aren't making sense, rather than just assuming they're an idiot who got it wrong. Particularly with Dulac who, as far as I can tell, is delighted to be a mouthpiece with no meaningful opinions of his own.
I agree that Public Negotiation makes some sense but I don't think it covers everything here. Like, I don't see the need to walk back comments on Wilson in like a week. I don't see the need to pump Pickett's tires up so much last year to negotiate, or try to negotiate hard with a guy who was going to be on vet minimum. Which, admittedly, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Just because it makes no sense to me doesn't mean it didn't make sense to someone else.
But I think there are some alternate explanations. That they were pumping up Pickett's tires because they genuinely expected him to be part of the future and something went wrong/changed. That we're hearing different things on Wilson because different parts of the org have different opinions on him (all the stuff about the strained pro relationship between him and Smith from other journos, that's not negotiation to me).
And I don't know those are true either... but I think there's a lot of smoke that the Steelers org's thinking on QBs isn't all that joined up or cohesive right now.
I don't think Milroe will make it past some of the QB needy teams at the top half of the second rd. Anyone else is whatever.
They were not 10-6 in 2002, and they would have made the AFC Championship if not for a horrendous call by the officials.what don't you understand about "read one, read 2, then make something happen"
do you think that means not reading a defense??
2001 13-3
2002 10-6
2003 6-10
you don't see the pattern??
If Milroe has a combine and a pro-day, I wouldn't still be shocked to see him at the top half of the first round, and whatever team does that are the Steelers of 2022.I don't think Milroe will make it past some of the QB needy teams at the top half of the second rd. Anyone else is whatever.
If this team signs RW and lets JF walk...
lmao
I'm sure it's not. Until you have that franchise guy, people are going to have opinions.I don't think we disagree on how and why sports journalists get their news.

Agreed. Neither are the long term answer. They just need somebody to start for a year or 2.I could see Tomlin being dumb enough to push for a 100m deal for Wilson.
The end result will be the same if it’s Fields or Wilson, so I honestly don’t care who is at QB.
Sign a retread in FA or sign Fields/Wilson, bring back Rudolph, see if Tommy Maddox is in game shape, whatever.
The reality is, it’s like worrying what color to paint the Titanic.

It makes sense to just sign whoever comes in cheaper so they can use the extra money to build out the rest of the team in preparation for the guy they draft in 2026 (*crosses fingers they don't bother with Milroe).
My only concern about signing the younger guy is that they talk themselves into him being the answer longer term even if he's not (I don't think he is) and decide to not make finding a QB in 2026 the top priority.Ya I would imagine you sign the cheaper and younger guy - but nothing this org does makes sense under AR2.
Fields is exactly who I thought he was, but he’s an easy guy to root for, so I prefer him.
Wilson is cooked and feels fake, but that could be because a lot of the Hawks defensive guys said he’s FOS and not genuine, and I’m projecting.
I think its more of I'd rather watch Justin Fields than Mr. Moonball, has nothing to do with wins because this team is stuck either way.I could see Tomlin being dumb enough to push for a 100m deal for Wilson.

I think this could be true in games like the first Browns game and the second Bungles game, but I'm not sure he could keep up in the first Bungles game or the Commanders game. Let's not forget, Fields didn't win a game where the defense gave up more than 13 points. The thing with Fields and why he works here is his legs. Had he played, they actually probably would have had more wins because when Russ needed to scramble it all went to shit.
