OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: Ploff wins?!? Fire Tomlin

I think people have a short term memory issue. Fields sucks less than Wilson, but the dude isnt a franchise QB.

It took multiple oc in Bmore to develop Lamar. Tomlin was talked into KP by Colbert because of KP accuracy the funny thing is the guy people assume Tomlin wanted actually played well for greenbay this season. There’s a limited amount of offense anyone can run with Fields at Qb. He did make strides this season
I am ready for a down season I am ready to trade tj and Minka and get off this hamster wheel

Why is there always a scapegoat for Tomlin?

It’s been verified by several beat guys KP was a Tomlin pick.

Colbert was on the way out and wasn’t going to pound the table for any pick.

As for Jackson, Harbaugh literally revamped the entire offense for him part way through his rookie season and he’s been a star ever since.

And guess who hired the OCs that kept Jackson on path to being a superstar, MVP QB?

Harbaugh has developed two franchise QBs for the Ravens while Tomlin continues to run an offense that sets franchise record for futility every season.

This discussion of which coach can develop a QB isn’t even a discussion anymore - it’s a verifiable fact Harbaugh can and every QB under Tomlin flounders:

Rudolph
MT
KP
Fields
Wilson

He’s either really poor at evaluating the position or very poor at finding competent OCs/developing a modern offense.

If there's a new coordinator, I think I'd expect Fields to follow Smith to where ever he goes.

Also re what you said about another season of Tomlinball with Fields being moderately successful... yes. That's my fear and expectation too. All these personnel, staffing things - it doesn't matter unless Tomlin is going to open things up. Change and adapt.
And we all know that's not going to happen. At least not enough given how far he'd have to come.

Austin and Tomlin are portrayed as very stupid in the Hard Knocks show on HBO.

On November 12, 2018, Teryl Austin was relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator after the Bengals defense became the first in NFL history to give up 500+ yards in 3 straight games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New Orleans Saints, respectively.

Apparently Davante Adams said he'd love to play for Tomlin when asked about it on a podcast. I kinda doubt the Jets bring him back so I think trading for or signing him would be a good plan to help out the WR group.

Colbert goal was to be the guy who drafted the next franchise quarterback. He is the guy who had a 1st grade on Mason and tried to trade up for KP.
Now i do blame tomlin for a modern offense.

Yeah he has no guarantee money left on his deal so he wants a new deal and said he would be willing to mentor Gp.

Im pretty sure EVERY player would like to play for Tomlin. He's a tremendous motivator and a player's coach. The boys love him.

This is like Bylsma allowing the guys to play wiffle ball on ice. Of course you are going to love that coach.

That doesn't make it right. No thanks to Adams. The issue you have is a coaching issue. Then build new talent around a coach's actual strategy.

But they're not going to get rid of Tomlin, though. Saying no to a good player because "they need a new coach" doesn't make sense when they won't be getting rid of that coach.

I’d prefer getting someone that’s a little younger and will be around for a while, but this team also desperately needs good WRs so I wouldn’t turn my nose up at Adams. He’s a savant when it comes to route running so I think he’ll age pretty well.

And if Rodgers is gone, I think it’s almost guaranteed he’ll get cut.

Tomlin on why he drafted KP:

First of all, he had a couple of elements of his game that were really attractive,” Tomlin said on The Rich Eisen Show. “His ability to anticipate and his professional-level accuracy. Oftentimes, the college guys have a ways to go in those areas. When we talked about a high floor it’s usually because they’re pro ready in those areas and he was

We also had the proximity angle and a bird’s eye view of his growth and development. He does the things that come with the quarterback position in a very natural way whether it’s dealing with and leading his teammates or talking to the media. None of that appears to be a chore for him.

Translation in Tomlin speak:

“I had a big advantage watching him practice and develop in the same practice facility as me for five years, and thought his tools would translate well to the pros.”

The idea Colbert forced the KP pick on Tomlin is as ludicrous an idea as Tomlin having a HOF coaching career.

Ditto but I'll add having a true alpha dog mostly professional veteran in the room should help all the young kids too. The lack of that guy has I think been an issue in the past.

Besides, beggars can't be choosers. There's only so many high end WRs available and not all of them will be interested.

Nothing much we didn't know, but extra confirmation.

Not only this, but signing Adams eliminates the need to draft a WR high, at least this year. I think you'd ideally sign Adams and see if he can mentor Pickens, and I don't think you need to draft another WR this year if you're keeping Pickens and signing Adams.

Adams is due something north of $35M each of the next two years. I'm not trading anything for him.

He's likely going to be cut and will be a free agent. If he's being traded, it's with a reworked contract that would be substantially cheaper than that.

Agreed. But I can't see a world where Adams isn't cut. He can just tell the Jets he is not going to restructure and there is no way they pay that contract. Then he gets to pick who he wants to sign with.

He seems like a guy that wants his money but yah never know, he may want to take a little less and sign with a contender.

I'm all for it though if he is willing to sign for 15-20mil a season.

And I still think they should take a WR if that player is the best player in round 1. For example, would be great to roll out: X:Pickens, Z:Adams, Y(Slot): Egbuka

Signing Adams would be dope. Dude's old, but he can still ball.

I'd still draft a WR high, though. Pickens+Adams+pick+Wilson/Austin is a damn good WR group. You don't have to rely on the pick coming in and making a huge impact right away or you can trade Pickens. By the time Adams is on his way out, hopefully the pick has developed into a #1.

I believe he would want to play for Tomlin. Less convinced he'd be happy with an unknown QB and/or OC situation, though that could be decided by the time FA rolls around.

So Tomlin and Rodgers always seem to flirt when we play against him. Incoming Rodgers/Adams? lol
Not only do I think Rodgers is washed, but he's extremely unlikable. I'd rather stick with Fields or Wilson.

My personal feeling is at this point that they've screwed the pooch with Pickens and only a gigantic shock would make him shake up and don't want him in any shape, way, or form. If things were better him being a moody teenager would be workable but this team needs to keep pressure washing its culture until all the things that cause explosions are gone.

But if they do keep him then yeah, Adams and Pickens is really legit. And while I can respect people wanting to add more to them, that'd be an absolute waste if Smith is still here.

Yeah unless they are moving Gp no need to draft a wr and sign one. Adams GP Ca3 Wilson and Ben are the 5 wr maybe a day 3 pick but i definitely think a TE is in play. Unless they get more picks I think it’s most likely all defense this draft
