Kubiak is the guy that would bring me slight hope I suppose.

SF doesn’t have an OC because it’s KS, so Kubiak can’t really move up in that org from being their passing game coordinator.

His best chance to get a HC job is to leave and become an OC somewhere else.

He really believes in things that make Tomlin sweat at night though, like play action and using the middle of the field.

So probably not a good match with that fancy doo hickey stuff.

Plus working under a conservative coach hell bent on winning with D, and MR/KP combo won’t have Kubiak exactly salivating.
Wouldn't hate Kubiak I guess, it would certainly check the nepotism box for the Steelers haha. I just feel like that would be a lateral move at best for him.

On Leftwich, there was a report earlier in the season that he reached out to the Steelers about a coaching role and they pretty much left him on read.

Maybe Canada would have thrown a hissy fit if they brought Leftwich in as an assistant. But if not and they had no interest in him this season, not sure why they would want him now.

If they’re calling Pickett QB1 right now, then he should’ve started in the playoff game. I’m calling bs on that. Seems like they’re still doing lip service.

Just like Mason proved me wrong, I hope KP does the same.

We've already had this argument so I'm not going to go into full depth, but I really don't think it should surprise anyone if it turns out there is no lip service here and the Steelers just have a very odd way of looking at QB1.

"I want us to be versatile and dynamic. Obviously, we've gotta score more points. I want to be able to keep defenses off balance. I want to utilize all the talent that we have at our disposal. I'm excited about this process and the talent pool out there, based on what I've seen thus far. I'm really open to kinda learning through the process, man, and seeing what people have to say about their visions. And so, certainly I have a vision of what it looks like, but certainly open to learning through this process."

Tomlin's words on what he's looking for. Right words at least.

I’ve come to the realization none of this stuff really matters anyways til free agency and the draft. We’re not gonna get any answers earlier than March.

Im also seeing the Kaboly summary may have been a misquote? I’ll have to watch the Tomlin presser myself since Kaboly is a bit of a clown.

Like I'm not out here pounding the table for the guy, but I don't think it's illogical to say he's the best available UFA and would represent a significant upgrade over Pickett/Rudolph.

My preference would be Fields if we're talking a legitimate QB competition in training camp, something we didn't have in 2022.

I’m saying it’s illogical because you would have to throw 30m+ at a 35 year old QB without knowing if he’s fully recovered from a torn Achilles.

There’s zero chance he can be properly evaluated by the Steelers medical team in March.

It’s a massive gamble to sign any QB to big money coming off that type of injury, let alone an immobile 35 year old.

It reeks of fan desperation.

I agree that he's not without risk, but it's not illogical to at least kick the tires on the best available UFA QB when you don't have an answer in house.

Obligatory not a doctor, but he suffered the injury in October. Surely 6 months is enough time to assess how he's recovering, and if he'll be available for TC no?

I'd argue what's more desperate is Steelers fans thinking that Pickett is capable of a year 3 jump at age 26 despite all that he's shown in his 2 years here.

Boy I can’t wait for the cycle to reset.

People get excited during the offseason for hirings/signings/draft picks.

They look great in camp.

They look great in preseason when actual good teams aren’t trying or showing their schemes.

They are back to mediocre with moments of horrendous sprinkled in during the regular season.

Barely miss or barely make the playoffs and are done in the first 12 minutes of the WC game.

Everyone is mad <——— we are currently here.

Direct quote on being asked if Pickett will be the starting QB entering the offseason:

"He [Pickett] will, but there will be competition. There's obviously always competition in this thing. We don't anoint anyone. Man, I'm appreciative of his efforts and where he is, and excited about continuing to work with. But certainly he will be challenged from a competition perspective moving forward. Competition brings the best out in all of us."

I tried to find video of it just to check how the wording marries up, but that's the words from Steelers' Depot.

You can give that quote some wriggle room either side to me, but it is firm that Pickett is the starting QB now. The offseason could get wild, but I feel like most times the Steelers telegraph their offseason early.

And it all comes down, imo, to what you think that competition stuff means. Me personally, given how Tomlin generally speaks of competition and how he's ran competition in the past, don't think it means much. I don't think there's going to be a QB competition unless Pickett starts one during camp by getting thoroughly outplayed. But that's just a guess.

Rudolph would be a an idiot to stay here. This is likely his only shot to be an NFL starting QB. I’m sure at least 1 team will be willing to give him a shot with how he looked.

Yeah I would be shocked if Pickett didn’t start the year as the starter. And I’d be mildly surprised if there is anything Rudolph/Insert Vet here could do to unseat him.

I think it’s kind of a mistake to go with a Pickett/Veteran “competition” but I can’t say there’s not a small part of me that’s somewhat interested in what Pickett could do in a hopefully better offensive environment.

He went on IR end of Oct.

That is barely a little over four months when FA starts.

Recovery time is 6-9 months and he recently said he hopes to be ready for OTAs, but not be mobile… just be able to throw in non contact 7-7 drills.

If he doesn’t fully recover, now you have a lot of guaranteed money sitting against your cap, because he won’t come in on some one year, prove it deal.

All that risk for a 35 year old QB with one playoff win isn’t being desperate?

Definitely beg to differ.

Just saw the tweet was posted already.

Other sources have said that Tomlin was more emphatic about it being a competition between Mason and Kenny. I’m glad they’re doing this, let performance next year dictate who plays and ignore past results or draft position.

& Minnesota finally benched him too
Dobbs was brought in by Arizona to be their starter and another NFL team acquired him to start after an injury. There are a lot of teams with horrible QB options.

Rudolph would get a chance to start somewhere if he wants to go that route. For someone who won’t “anoint” a QB, Tomlin already anointed Kenny as the Steelers starting QB. Then again, Kenny will be hurt again by week 3, so maybe he should just come back.

I think people are grossly exaggerating how much Rudolph having like 2 or 3 good games is going to make other teams want to make him a starter.

Mike White had 4 games on par with Rudolph in 2022-2023 but signed to be Tua’s backup in Miami.
