I don't agree with that assessment. If we're gonna shell out that amount and term for a player in his late 30's he needs to win a playoff game, or, play well enough that we should win that game.

Making decisions on one game samples is a recipe for bad decisions.

That whole saga in Atlanta made absolutely no sense from the beginning.

I think far too much is made of Atlanta's decision to get a guy like Cousins and then spend high on the draft on a guy like Penix. If you don't have a QB you don't have nothing, neither was a sure thing, so why not take your swings there if you like them? Yeah, there's probably going to be some inefficiency... but if you find your guy through doing so, then who cares, most teams are inefficient in finding their franchise QB.

The issue is who they trusted. Cousins coming off of that injury was always a massive risk and one that always potentially had a long timeline. It's genuinely possible that it turns out all Cousins needed was more time to get it right and get his confidence back and he'll be a better QB next year than Penix. Unlikely but possible.

Will be real interesting to see who Penix is too as he's basically playing for the GM's job.

That's not solely as to what my opinion is predicated on. He's played well, but I haven't been bowled over by his performances either. There's been a couple so-so performances in there. Overall he's played well, but I don't think at this time he should be given the keys just yet.

He was just a way too expensive bridge QB. Hindsight is 20/20 and there's no guarantees these guys play like they do in ATL, but Darnold for $10m and Russ for vet min look like incredible values right now.

It's gone brutally wrong but in a season's time it'll be forgotten except for the lulz. And, while Darnold and Wilson are going great, next year Darnold is a pleasant memory for the Vikings and Wilson we be our expensive gamble where one injury brings it all tumbling down.

Eventually a team is just gonna have to put its foot down on these contract demands from QBs. I get it’s the most important position and all but so many of these teams hamstring themselves by paying non elite guys elite money.

Teams are afraid of getting on the QB carousel though.

Justin Jefferson + Trent Williams makes roughly the same amount as Dak Prescott. Paying twice the amount for an average QB than it costs for the best players at other positions is a good way to solidify mediocrity.

We all know it but a big reason is the cap going up every single year. It's basically doubled since 2014. Gambling $$$, billion dollar broadcast rights contracts with like 7 networks, etc.

I remember the shock and awe when Stafford was made the NFL's highest paid player making $27m per in 2017. 7 years later Dak is making $60.

The rise in QB contracts still outpaces the cap increase though. 2018 was probably the real start of it with Jimmy G, Kirk Cousins, and Matt Ryan all getting new deals and becoming the highest paid players in the league.

I honestly think you could make an argument that the truly elite QB's are actually underpaid though.
