Between the Oilers, Flyers and Red Wings, once Subban is signed we should be able to trade Kaberle very easily.

The fact that he stunk so bad last year and was in way over his head makes you question his upside. Doesn't make him a bust, but maybe his hockey sense won't allow him to be true top 6 player at the NHL level. There are lots of big and fast guys that just can't play top 6...Kilger just off the top of my head.

true enough, though he's been on fire in the AHL this year, 10th in scoring and 5th in goals, as a 20 year old in a season where the AHL was deeper in talent than usual.

haven't watched him much, and in the brief glimpses last year with the Isles, he looked lost... then again, playing 4th line minutes with scrubs will do that to most 18-19year old rookies.

creativity and hockey sense are part of his attributes in most of the profiles on him, to go with his size/skating/offensive tools.

i don't think you get many Kilger type players going top-5 these days, draft bust are still a reality and hard to pick out, but the big physically skilled guy with limited hockey sense going that high doesn't seem to happen nearly as much as it did in the 90's.

Reminds me of the situation with Turris.

Now is he going to be Turris (who finally seems to be realizing some of his potential) or is he Benoit Pouliot?

I like the idea of taking chances on prospects but you've got to be leery about what you give up for a guy who has just asked for a trade after a horrible year.

Yep.

I think LeBrun had it in his article today, tons of teams are looking for D right now. Detroit is completely depleted on D, they played Kent Huskins and Brian Lashoff tonight.

We may need to retain some of Kaberle's salary though.

while i don't particularly like the idea of young players asking for trades...

hard to blame anyone who is driven to succeed and loves playing hockey for wanting off the Island, can you?

I think all things being equal you stick with the team that drafted you.

Then again there may be more to it. If he's out there playing with scrubs and wasting away on the 4th line... I don't know enough about the situation to really comment. I know that the Coyotes misused Turris and admitted as much. Maybe that's what happened with this guy too.

Or maybe he's a primadonna. I'd do my homework before making any offers, just saying.

You know I love the idea of trading for young talent and this might be an opportunity of getting a future cornerstone at a discount so I like your way of thinking. And he's so young right now he could easily come back from this.
