Blade Runner 2049 was fine. Villenueve expressed regret because he was playing around in someone else's universe and felt like he made weird decisions.
them using Jessica talking to Alia in utereo as opposed to them doing the voice over internal monologue like in the books was cool. Taking Chani from being a pretty passive trad concubine for Paul to a dissenter in the whole prophecy was cool as well.
Re: 2049, not here to change anyone's minds or compare it to the original, I just thought it was boring as hell and a huge waste of potential. It had me sour on him getting the Dune reins, but I think he nailed it. One tweet or comment I saw and agree with is "OK Villeneuve, you gave us the world, now give me the weird". I would love to see his take on a Bene Tleilax world and scheme, or how the navigation guild works. Might draw the line at Leto II...but I'm still curious
Spoilers to follow up on the changes, including some refs to later books:
With Chani, they expertly crafted her up to be Paul's inner monologue from the book, communicating the weight of his decisions and misery they WILL cause. It was cheesy at times but hell, so is the book in this regard.
With Jessica, she got done a bit dirty, but still served to pay off the part of the Bene Gesserit in all this. And Rebecca Ferguson's stare has LAYERS. They gave her reticence about Paul to Chani and moved her into Stilgar's role as prophet. Her communicating with Alia was well done, too and the emphasis on the Harkonnen ancestry has me all sorts of excited for Alia's role (and descent)
