It wasn't a bad episode but after having watched Supernatural season finale, it just paled in comparison. I felt disappointed. And three days ago I watched a movie with time travel elements so this just didn't quite match.

What bugged me about the finale was how they "hid" from the Kaylons by crossing the event horizon of the black hole.

When you cross the event horizon of a black hole there is no escape.

(vague spoilers in the 1st paragraph):

First reaction to the season finale is positive. There was a slight Voyager "Year of Hell" feel about this one. I really liked it, even though a few scenes dragged (engineering technobabble) at the expense of moments I wanted fleshed out (the closing scenes and more "year of hell" exposition). For a two-parter, the second half was a nice contrast in tone to the first, which was more traditional, light-hearted Orville. The space battles felt less Star Trekish and were more an homage to Empire Strikes Back. The underwater voyage was good. At that point, I assume we all ticked off our character checklist, so there were no surprises. The brief cameo appearance left me wanting more, but I came away feeling cheated. I've completely accepted the casting change, but I wish we could have both characters, as the original was my favorite of the cast.

"Road Not Taken" was an adequate season finale, but not a series finale by any stretch. I think this arc could have been extended to three episodes, with #2 being an hour of relentless misery in the alternate timeline (if you're not feeling the Ed/Kelly timeline story then, yeah, it would be a slog). I'd have been okay with jettisoning a Moclan episode to make it happen. Anyway....

I'm still giving the nod to "Home" and "Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes" as the best of season 2. "Home" was beautifully filmed, introduced a cool otherworldly setting, and gave a great sendoff to a character that probably hadn't yet earned it. Many might not agree with me on "Excepting Fishes", but I got the feels for the Krill operative. I've rewatched moments from that episode several times. I'd like Talaya and Ed to have another encounter.

Season 2 had a lot of filler. I'm okay with banking filler episodes in a series as satisfying as this one, as long as it reaches Star Trek seven season range (at this point, I'll settle for five). If this is the end -- and I'm expecting a third season based on MacFarlane's street cred -- then I'll take my handful of really memorable episodes and be content.
I 100% agree with a three parter. It just felt rushed.

To me it felt like there was a lot of homages to Star Wars. The Bunker scene to me even had music just like in Return Of The Jedi during the Endor scenes. Not forgetting Yaphet's door scene which was straight out of the beginning of ROTJ.

I had a similar thought while watching, that it would've been neat to spend more time in the alternate timeline. I was thinking of even longer than one more episode, like some of the story arcs in DS9, but, on second thought, I suppose that several episodes of bleak, serious sci-fi might alienate some viewers.

What bugged me about the finale was how they "hid" from the Kaylons by crossing the event horizon of the black hole.

Yeah, that bugged me. A 13-year-old could've corrected them on that. Also, they were all standing before and after they hit the water at high speed. I don't really hold the show to very high scientific standards, but it helps the suspension of disbelief if things aren't too unbelievable.

Anyways, I enjoyed the season and am sad at the thought that I might've just watched the last episode of the show. I hope that MacFarlane can convince FOX to renew it, even if the budget would need to be cut. I could give up some of the CGI.

There is speculation that season 3 has been "quietly" renewed, along with options for seasons 4 and 5. I don't care for the source of this info, as he's an online personality I don't regularly follow or respect, but he has loose industry contacts. In other words, this is a hot air take, so take it for what it is.

--There is an Orville comic book line and action figure rollout scheduled for the summer. It seems odd to introduce new product if the show is being cancelled. The realistic take is that action figure and book licensing deals were long in place and that season 3 is irrelevant to their existence. The comic books will cover adventures on Orville between seasons one and two.

--Orville was approved for a nearly $16 million tax credit earlier this year. This won't tip the scales, but it can't hurt.

--Additional speculation for delaying a renewal announcement is figuring where Orville fits into the Disney/Fox merger (don't have details for this talking point). MacFarlane is reportedly in contract negotiations and will make serious bank from whoever signs him. He's rumored to have been courted by Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu (Disney) in addition to Fox. I suspect he and Fox will find a way to make things work, and I'm hoping he insists Orville season 3 must be on the table, as it is his pet project.

I wonder if Gotham being done on Fox frees up potential money for Orville? It was an effects heavy show that looked to have a sizeable budget.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd prefer that The Orville remains on Fox, only because I tend to switch streaming services to watch specific shows and cancel when they're done. I recently ditched Netflix in favor of Crave/HBO to watch Game of Thrones. I'll cancel Crave when Stranger Things airs on Netflix in July. At least with basic cable, I can record whatever episodes I want and not lose any replay value when switching services. Maybe I should start a GoFundMe to help pay my cable bill, or else commit to my all fish stick diet.

FWIW, I just checked some of the cast's Twitter and didn't notice anything that might suggest that this was the end. Palicki most recently wrote "I work with the best cast and crew in the galaxy. It’s an honor to do space stuff with all of them." MacFarlane wrote something similar that was also in the present (not past) tense. Maybe that's just standard stuff, but the point is that they don't seem too worried that this might be the end.

Considering it's MacFarlane's show I'm not too worried about it being back as I'm sure he has a ton of pull at Fox after all the money he made them.

That's a good point. Also, if they don't renew it, he might be able to take it to another network or streaming service, in which case Fox might lose him entirely. Keeping him happy and in the fold might be worth it even if the show loses them a little money. Perhaps this delay is less about whether they'll renew and more about the logistics, such as budget and how and when it fits into their future schedule.

Finale was good, first half was more Star Wars than Star Trek which was interesting.

I think it comes back for one more rodeo as a mid season show.

Just watched sanctuary. It's probably the best episode of the series, right after the Kaylon two parter.
It was good, but I thought that there were too many Moclan episodes generally, so I felt a little exhausted by Moclan plots.

This has made my day. I saw a video the other day that laid out the reasons why fans shouldn't be worried. The most compelling reason was that Seth MacFarlane's contract with FOX is up next month. If they had not renewed the show, they likely would've lost MacFarlane. They had to renew it, even if it loses them money, just so that they could retain his services. That seems to make a cancellation after Season 3 a good possibility, but, hopefully, MacFarlane is smart enough to put in his new contract an "out" if the show is cancelled or at least the option to take the series to a streaming service. Either way, he has the power to decide when the series has run its course.

It's kind of a no brainer with McFarlane and also to give Fox an audience in SciFi especially with Star Trek: Picard going to debut around Thanksgiving-Christmas.

It's seems weird for Fox to renew an expensive show that they're not going to be airing on FOX, but I figured that the main reason for the renewal was to keep MacFarlane in the fold, and this still accomplishes that. I wonder if the episodes will be allowed to be a bit longer.
