As a team looking at the future we are so much better situated than you are prepared to give credit for. Not having a first next year is fine when you consider that we have a real living #1 centre instead. As long as we can sign our big three we have a pretty sweet up and coming line up to join our pretty special top three players.
Unless the big 3 don't resign and we have taken a core that was in it's prime, was a goal away from SCF, and instead of adding to it, we tore it down and ended up trading away a generational player in his prime. A player that is so hard to get that several teams have never had a player as good as EK in their history. Has Arizona, Florida, Columbus, Carolina, Vancouver (Bure maybe???), Minnesota, etc, etc ever had a player as good as EK.
Not saying it was an easy job to keep Methot, retool Phaneuf/anderson/etc to keep it going and improve, but you keep trying while you have a player like EK. Washington didn't trade Ovechkin, they changed coaches, GMs, tried many different players, kept drafting and developing, etc. etc. the last thing you do is trade away the player that you go into a full rebuild in hopes (no guarantees) that you will acquire in the first place.
Maybe a better strategy would have been to keep that team together and happy until EK and Stone were signed long-term so that if the retool took a few rough years at least they would be forced to stick around. Because if they don't stick around then the team is no better off than ANY team in the league would be if they sold off their best players and went into a rebuild.
