According to our Japanese media, Ohtani-san is leaning toward the Dodgers.
Dodgers have made it to post-seasons 11 consecutive years. For him it's very attractive, he doesnt care about money. He purely wants to win the world series.

I think it really comes down to what Ohtani wants, he's already said he does not think he is a good fit for NY, I assume its because of the media attention, he does not seem to be the type of guy who would like the glitz and glam of a big market team. It's been reported that Ohtani is prioritizing what the team can do for his development, the Jays new facility in Florida is a factor for him. You have a guy who was making millions, had his parents put him on a 1000 a month (week?) budget, he lived in the teams dorm, when asked by media what his dogs name was, he wouldn't share it. He seems to be a super private man, playing for the holy grail of baseball teams (Dodgers) wont give him that privacy, he's not built like most people, I wouldn't let myself believe he might sign in T dot but it feels like it's the perfect match for his secretive personality.

Bellinger+Hader
Arenado trade
Teoscar+Hader
Chapman+Hernandez
Bellinger+Hicks

Many options left but they must act soon. Ohtani needs make a damn decision!

With holes to fill in the field I can't see us spending the money Hader is going to want on a reliever who won't close.

Hader would close and be an upgrade on Romano. There were a lot of games where Romano looked gas and we had to put him out their for 2 innings. I remember a couple of times he got out pitched by Felix Bautista which lead to losses. Hader would be a massive upgrade on our 8th best reliever which is Trevor Richards. Upgrading from Richards to Hader is like netting +2.5 WAR.

I do see an obvious and clear need at 3B but I'm not interested in paying for a crappy one. I'd rather bet on Barger/Martinez at 3B and have Hader over paying Chapman 150-160 million, personally.

I'd take Bellinger in LF or Teo/Hoskins for DH though. But we could get one of those guys and still get Hader.

Hader is looking at something like 5/100.

Honestly, if the Jays get Ohtani, I'm not sure that they absolutely need anything beyond an optionable starter, but other adds would be nice.

In this scenario, Horwitz/Biggio/Clement/Espinal would cover LF, Barger/Martinez would cover 3B, Manoah for the 5th starter (with optionable guy and Mitch White also there), and the BP can have invites like every other year.

I agree the roster is pretty well set if Ohtani signs here, and they probably won't do anything else significant. If Ohtani signs with another team, it's more complicated because no stand-out bats are left.

If Ohtani doesn't sign, we could get Bellinger, Teo, Hoskins, or Soler. But I only see a need for one of these players. And then, if you signed Teo or Bellinger, for example, there may be more resources left over to address either pitching or the position player market. And with a bunch of mediocrity left in the free agency player market, I may put it into Hader over someone like Lee or Chapman. Or go the trade route.

Do we not need more starting pitching depth? We can’t count on Gausman, Bassitt, Berrios, Kikuchi to make all of their starts next year. It’s nearly impossible to repeat that again. That was a glaring need last season, that thankfully wasn’t exposed because of the amazing durability of the aforementioned 4 starters.

Manoah should be the fifth starter unless there's an indication he's completely cooked. The team does Tiedemann.

We do have pitching depth, it's just in the minors and not yet established.

Manoah is 5. After that Green, Francis, Pearson can all be bulk guys and the Jays are actively looking for someone who can sit in AAA with starter ability. Tiedemann could also come up as a starter or bulk guy.

Keep in mind that Yankees had Chad Green 2.0 penciled in as their 4th starter up until 2 days ago.

They'll definitely want more depth, but I think it looks ok right now. Assuming Manoah steps into the 5 spot, Tiedemann will be waiting to step in at any time, while Francis is coming off a strong season and White at least finished up really well the last month or two in Buffalo. There's not a lot of certainty there, but there rarely is in your depth starters.

Grasping for straws but MLB comparing the Skydome to Ohtanis home ball park in Japan.. they do look very similar
1. Play for an entire country
2. Have more privacy outside of the American media market
3. Has good numbers at the Rogers center, comparable to his home park in Japan
4. Enjoy the Japanese restaurants and community here
5. Play with Kikuchi and Vlad
6. Best spring training player facilities in baseball for his rehab, which he personally drove across the country to see
7. Possibly make the most amount of money in Toronto. It certainly looks like our offer could be the best.

Toronto is in this. I still think he goes to the Dodgers but it’s taking him a long time to decide. He’s thinking about this.

I think his Skydome numbers this year were .444 BA and an OPS over 1.000 .. kinda Meh! :)

PTI had a segment on Ohtani the other day.

Michael Wilbon made the case that playing in LA makes you one of the stars. Playing in a city like Toronto and you ARE the star.

Kawhi was close to this level when he was in Toronto (but was only in town for a year).

The last ultra star of this level was probably peak Alomar.

Don't forget that we also have Chad Green. Between him and Swanson and Mayza I think we're pretty ok for high leverage guys even without any additions.

Toronto might be one of the most multicultural cities in the world but I'm pretty sure there's more "Japanese" (Sushi/Fusion) restaurants than actual Japanese nationals living here (thanks to predominantly Chinese-owned establishments). We really have nothing close to Little Tokyo, LA or the fine dining Japanese restaurants they have there.

You are of course right but I think the casual fan makes a generalized assumption on this.

forget about the Jays/Dodgers and MLB aspect of all this…an international superstar choosing Toronto over Los Angeles would be HUGE for all of Canada let alone just Toronto

you gotta believe anyone and everyone in Ohtanis circle are pushing towards LA and staying in US
