There's a big difference between 2019, where Stroman was one of the more senior members on the team and thus expected to be a clubhouse leader, and bringing him in now.
Would love for us to add a starter because right now beyond Gausman and Berrios its very murky out there.
Kara Waglund said exactly this about there being a difference re: 2019 and 2023 Stroman and Scott Mitchell eluded to it moments ago on Overdrive.
But Mitchell also said he would be shocked if these rumours are true. Said things ended so poorly with the Jays and they didn’t want him in the clubhouse - things were that bad. Also said this is likely the Jays leaking this to drive the price up for their competitors and the Cubs are happy to have it out there. Shapiro hired the current Cubs GM to his first job in baseball;
In 2008, Hawkins joined the Cleveland Indians baseball team as an advance scouting intern.[2] He took a full-time role as a scout for the organization in 2009.
Hawkins was the scout that found perennial all star Jose Ramirez. Hawkins was named the team's assistant director of player development in 2010 and the director of player development in 2015.[3]He was named the Indians' assistant general manager in 2016. He was named Sports Illustrated top young up and coming baseball executive in 2015. [2]
On October 15, 2021, the Chicago Cubshired Hawkins as their general manager.
Waglund did concede and say this isn’t the Jays M.O. so they could be leaking this to keep their real targets under wraps.
Which makes the most sense, since no one had the Jays getting Ray, Villar, Stripling, Walker, Berrios, Cimber, Dickerson, Richards, Soria, Whit, Pop, Bass, or White as trade targets until the deals got done over the last 3 deadlines. MAYBE Berrios was thrown out there as the fit made sense but that wasn’t a leaked rumour.
He needs a strong finish. Jays need him and Orelvis as back up plays if Chapman’s price is ridiculous. A strong finish from both Barger and Orelvis increase the Jays leverage in contract talks and perhaps increase trade value for the deadline or in the offseason if Chapman is re-signed.
