There's a big difference between 2019, where Stroman was one of the more senior members on the team and thus expected to be a clubhouse leader, and bringing him in now.

Would love for us to add a starter because right now beyond Gausman and Berrios its very murky out there.

Kara Waglund said exactly this about there being a difference re: 2019 and 2023 Stroman and Scott Mitchell eluded to it moments ago on Overdrive.

But Mitchell also said he would be shocked if these rumours are true. Said things ended so poorly with the Jays and they didn’t want him in the clubhouse - things were that bad. Also said this is likely the Jays leaking this to drive the price up for their competitors and the Cubs are happy to have it out there. Shapiro hired the current Cubs GM to his first job in baseball;

In 2008, Hawkins joined the Cleveland Indians baseball team as an advance scouting intern.[2] He took a full-time role as a scout for the organization in 2009.

Hawkins was the scout that found perennial all star Jose Ramirez. Hawkins was named the team's assistant director of player development in 2010 and the director of player development in 2015.[3]He was named the Indians' assistant general manager in 2016. He was named Sports Illustrated top young up and coming baseball executive in 2015. [2]

On October 15, 2021, the Chicago Cubshired Hawkins as their general manager.

Waglund did concede and say this isn’t the Jays M.O. so they could be leaking this to keep their real targets under wraps.

Which makes the most sense, since no one had the Jays getting Ray, Villar, Stripling, Walker, Berrios, Cimber, Dickerson, Richards, Soria, Whit, Pop, Bass, or White as trade targets until the deals got done over the last 3 deadlines. MAYBE Berrios was thrown out there as the fit made sense but that wasn’t a leaked rumour.

He needs a strong finish. Jays need him and Orelvis as back up plays if Chapman’s price is ridiculous. A strong finish from both Barger and Orelvis increase the Jays leverage in contract talks and perhaps increase trade value for the deadline or in the offseason if Chapman is re-signed.

They would have drafted someone else if Nimmala wasn't willing to sign under slot.

Has nothing really to do with decisiveness or leadership.

It was a draft strategy by the Jays.
How is it not his decision to want to be there?

I'd love to give him another shot. He doesn't need to mash homers, but a solid multi-position infielder/outfielder who can get on base and no make outs would be nice to have off the bench. He is sorta like a better Biggio in theory, though Biggio has been pretty good the last couple of months (256 avg, 337 obp, 127 wRC+ since May 18th, covering 92 PAs with 5 HR and 14 RBI and 15 runs scored (a ZARP of nearly 1.00! :sarcasm)). Espinal too has been solid over the 2 months, though with much less playing time. So maybe there's no move to be made yet,

Mariners are smart to earn that sweet Canadian fan money. It's not super easy to get lots of Jays gear in BC unless you want to pay shipping from the garbage-ass Fanatics Jays Shop now that they seem to not just sell online directly out of the in-stadium team store or from like, Sport Chek or something. I got my mom a Bichette jersey T a couple of years ago and had to get it shipped from Sport Chek because the only stores in the lower mainland of BC that were selling Jays merch were selling Vlad Ts, basic Ts, or replica jerseys.

I'm surprised more team stores don't offer small selections of visiting team gear to make money off traveling fans or local fans of the out of market teams.

I'm always surprised by this as well. You know fans will be visiting and it's a cool little story to add to the merch you buy. Like I got this hat at a Jays game at Wrigley field kind of thing

I wonder if the Jays would kick the tires on Arenado.....

"We already have Arenado at home!"

*points to Chapman.

:sarcasm:
LOL.

I was aware, and thinking it would be a tough sell/fit. But if St Louis goes full drunken Homer....he's arguably an upgrade and only 4 years left after this one. Figuring out value would be very tough, Ryu would have to be part of it, Espinal perhaps too, along with a non-top prospect.

Absolutely. Plus his contract decreases in value over the next 4 years (through his age 36 season) so it would fit right in line with the other kids needing big fat raises as the money committed to him falls. Considering the fact that the Jays would likely be priced out of retaining Chapman in the off-season given the scarcity of quality 3Bs on the market, it would be a good way to fill that hole and maybe work towards Orelvis or another young infielder working his way into the lineup.

Baseball reference has a new game on the front page of their website. It is incredibly fun;

New game gets posted every day at midnight. Jays are on the grid today.

Remember: When in doubt, use Dotel, or Edwin Jackson

It's a lot of fun, yeah (and if you haven't seen it, the hockey equivalent is Puckdoku).

Today's was either easier than normal or I just had a really good day. Having the Jays there definitely helps, but I usually have to default to some of the most obvious players for a lot of them and that wasn't the case today.

Thanks, didnt know there was a hockey one. Will check it out

Jays are in Seattle this weekend, 75% of the fans will be from BC. Maybe doing it a few days early is tacky but come on, welcome to capitalism

I guess they are opposed to MLB and their team making money to pay their salaries. Blue Jays put Yankees and Red Sox stuff in their store too.
