Those guys are the exception, not the rule
I’m too lazy to look for it, but I had posted a while back the success rate of top-5 picks ending up actually materializing into long term NHL regulars let alone top-6F / top-4D and it was a mediocre rate of success

So no it’s not an exception, best players in a draft class are more often not chosen near the top of the draft, let alone 1st round

Entitled to what? An actual decent, entertaining product to spend my money and time on? Sure, I'm entitled to that. They're not entitled to my money and time. I'm the customer, not them.
Then don't watch or don't pay or take for another team, it's simple. Just because they don't do it YOUR way or draft the players YOU want, you take a little bitch fit. People like you make this site a clownshow.

I'm not watching. My opinion is as valid as yours. the only one throwing a bitch fit is you.

I'm just sitting' here, chillin', amused by the fact that they can't even succeed at tanking.

I had a graph on the statistical percentage of draft class success, which looks about like you think it would, but similar to you, I just don't care enough at this point to find it lol

Right LMFAO...and no, if you don't watch, your opinion is definitely not as valid as mine. Now you're not even making sense.

My opinion is on their failure to tank, which you don't have to be watching to observe. This is the tank thread. My opinion on their failure as a franchise relies on information accrued up until the last draft, when I was watching. Has your copium made you high?

What can I say? Stay mad.

You love your weak defenses with words like copium to try and insult. It's clear that you and others here don't even know what tanking is. Tanking is the deliberate selling off of players to go as low as you can in the standings, which they never did. Clown.

In a lost year, it would be nice to give good ice time to Newhook, Slaf, Ylonen, RHP, Struble, Barron, Kovacevic, and even Norlinder and Lindstrom to see what we have, and see how much they can grow into roles.

Nice that Newhook and Slaf have gotten roles in the top 9 and Barron in the top 4. Now I'd lke to see more of Ylonen and Struble.

I think we'll be picking in the top 10. 4 to 8 is my guess.

It's early but the forward crop doesn't seem that bad at all.

Celebrini, Lindstrom, Helenius, Eiserman, Demidov, Catton.

A quick look at the standings right now. The teams below us are:

San Jose
Chicago
Anaheim
Minnesota
Edmonton
Ottawa
Columbus

If Hughes makes the right tank moves, I'm sure we can be passed by Minnesota, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Columbus, probably Anaheim too. Finishing 3rd last could be a realistic goal, which would mean we'd pick at worst 5th overall.

what are those tank moves?
Easy ones are trading Allen, Savard, Pearson, and Kovacevic, who won't be a part of the future.
Hard ones are trading Monahan, Matheson, and Montembault, who could all be a part of the future.

Did you see Bergeron, Marchand, Pavelski, Pastrnak, Aho, Robertson becoming “major impact type players”?
Guys like Bergeron and Marchand are pretty unique though…

Looking at Pavelski, Pastrnak and Aho, you could tell something was up in there D+1 year.

But I guess your point is that we don’t know if the Habs have an impact (one or more) player yet. While that wouldn’t be false, to leave it to a guessing game shouldn’t be the way to build a franchise.

Along the way, you get surprises and disappointments. But you can plan getting more surprises then the odds you are giving yourself.

Which I'd say is exactly what Hughes & Co. have been doing since day 1... Managing assets with a net focus to increase the talent base with top line/top pair ceilings.

Dach, Newhook, Barron in the first ~18 months (& Heineman, though injuries have derailed him).

I would bet that over the next 8-10 months we'll see at least 2-3 more additions in that vein (20-23 year olds, high talent w/o big pro succes that are ready for shot at bigger role)

Add that to the draft & development focus that has already added Slaf, Hutson, Beck, Mesar, RB, Engstrom, Konyushkov, Fowler et. & seen Roy, Mailloux, Strubble, Trudeau, Kidney, Farrell et. make solid pro debuts...

Future is bright 😎

Need to lose this year and next and get some high end offensive talent.

We just saw how bad Columbus is, it's highly unlikely that they'll turn things around enough to catch us even if we start losing more. They are on pace for 61.5 points, we'd have for fire MSL and re-hire Ducharme to get below that.

To put in in perspective if we play the rest of the year like we did in 2021-2022 when we finished last, we'd still end up slightly ahead of that 61.5 pace that Columbus has. And yeah the team isn't good, but we aren't anywhere close to being as bad as we were in 21-22.

If there's a silver lining to Newhook being out, hopefully it's that Ylonen gets some time next to Monahan or Suzuki & on the PP... Bout time to see what he can do with some minutes with more skilled linemates

CC Suzuki Slaf
Ylonen Monahan Gally
Pearson Dvorak Anderson
Pez Evans Armia

With Newhook gone for 3 months, it's pretty much another lost year.

I guess I'm back on team tank. No where near enough depth in the organization to cover all of Dach, Newhook & RHP upfront.

Next year hopefully Roy is on the team. We get to look forward to Dach & Newhook coming back. Add another top 10 pick.

Move out Pearson & Monahan, and whoever else we can move.

There's no way without Dach and Newhook this team can produce enough offense.

We will grab our crown jewel forward this year.

Yup... I hope Hughes takes this as the signal to start selling.

Time to off load whomever we can and use our cap room to take playoff focused teams cap dumps for further assets (& to have some vet presence in the lineup so that we aren't plugging holes with Roy/Farrell/Mailloux et. Let them cook in Laval)

At the minimum, I hope we see Monahan, Pearson and 1 of Allen/Primeau all moved in short order.
