The probability of getting a Kucherov or trading for an Eichel is so small that you absolutely need to draft highly in order to guarantee the acquisition of talent. Of course, if you have Bobrov as your head of scouting... well, nothing is guaranteed.
All the teams that won via tanking needed to do both, so if the probability is so small, what's our actual plan because looking around the league getting elite players through lottery picks alone is not enough.

I was going to post this in the trade proposal thread, but thought it was better suited for the tank thread.

To EDM: Montembault + Jake Allen (50%) retained.

To MTL: Jack Campbell + Stewart Skinner + 2024 1st + 2026 1st + 2028 1st +?

Roll with a Skinner-Primeau tandem with Campbell in Laval.

To EDM: David Savard 50% retained by a 3rd team for a 3rd.
To MTL: Cody Cesi + 2030 1st

So with the win today MSL's overall record as coach improves to 0.432. Which projected over the next 62 games would put us at 74 points which would have us drafting 8th if the rest of the league continue at their current P%s.

Next 10 games or so are mostly against teams that are near to .500 so many could be thought of as those 4 point games. With 3 back to back games including tomorrow's we could quite easily drop a few spots.

Who are we picking in 12th spot?

There 's a lot of hockey left.

Hopefully we can sink inbthe standings and get some luck in the lottery.

I think Edmonton will rise. So will Minnesota. Are we really going to finish ahead of New Jersey, Ottawa and the Pens?

I think Calgary, Anaheim, Nashville, Chicago, and San Jose will be our biggest competition for the top 3 picks.

Fully expect to drop but every year there's a team that unexpectedly ends up in the bottom, so we should probably expect one of Minny, NJ, Edmonton to just fail to turn it around or a team like Seattle to suddenly just drop hard. You should also add Columbus, Arizona, and maybe even Philly as teams we are competing with.

In the end without another major injury I expect us to improve on last seasons point total but not enough to actually take us out of the top-10, good news for the tank is there should be some very interesting forward prospects in that range.

We'd have had Bedard or Carlson last year if not for exactly this kind of goalie freakishness.
These garbage goalies stealing points for us is really such a kick in the teeth. They're not part of the future, they're just in the way of good things.

I don't mind as much as most others the whole "winning culture" priority but an objectively terrible goaltender who is on his way out of the league stealing two points out of an otherwise losing game is not what I think of first when I think "winning culture".

Well, that's the Habs' idea of winning culture if last year is anything to go by, after which they play this song in the locker room.

And then draft a bunch of mid talent in the top 5.

I believe that's their definition of winning culture.

I'm officially in! When injuries on guys like Dach (last year it was Monahan) is your excuse, you're definitely not a contender! Let's get some top-5 pick!

Not sure what they’re waiting for. None of the 3 are our goalies of the future… just trade any of them if there’s even an offer on the table.

I mean most would argue you want good goaltending behind a young team, with a young dcore, to aid in the development of the young players.

When you have good goaltending, the goalies will steal points sometimes.

Sometimes we can't have it both ways: do what's best for developing the current players and do what's best for the best draft pick. We were however really lucky the years we over performed to get Caufield (15), Guhle (16), and Mailloux (31) in back to back to back drafts.

dude trade our f***** goalies.

Missed out on Leo Fantilli nd Bedard because of this stuff.

Caufield and Suzuki are second liners on a good team.

The fans in here love the winning culture. its mind numbing , have we watched the same team for 30 years????? Bottom 5 roster in the NHL year after year after year after year getting bailed out by goaltending
If that's a winning culture I don't ever want it again.

Do habs fans not watch other NHL hockey like what's so hard to realise we have been fed an asbolute shyte product for years we NEED to tank

They're essentially worthless on the trade market.

They don't provide good goaltending, they provide erratic goaltending. See how weak Jake Allen was last night. He is not consistent at all. And between the three of them, none of them have a rhythm or even the chance to approach steady play.

I'm a hardcore tanker. But HuGo aren't.

If we could get one more accidental on purpose rebuild tank this year, I think that would be enough.

The following future lineup could contend with a game breaker from a top 5 or 3 pick and then using the ufa market and it's assets and draft picks to make moves like the Golden Knights did to get Stone, Pietrangelo, and Eichel.

Caufield - Suzuki - Roy
Newhook - Dsch - Slaf
RHP - Monahan - Anderson
Gallagher - Evan's- Ylonen
Heineman, Pez

Guhle - Reinbacher
Matheson - Barron
Xhekaj - Mailloux
Hutson
Struble, Bogdan
Harris, Kovacevic
Trudeau, Norlinder

Montembault
Primeau
Fowler

Traded for assets in addition to some of the above young players: Dvo, Pearson, Savard, Allen.

They're essentially worthless on the trade market.

They don't provide good goaltending, they provide erratic goaltending. See how weak Jake Allen was last night. He is not consistent at all. And between the three of them, none of them have a rhythm or even the chance to approach steady play.

According to some stats, we've had great goaltending through the first quarter of this year. Even Patrick Roy would have bad games. Am I saying this goaltending tandem are Roy? No. I'm saying they will have bad games.

Are any rate I'm ready to go Montembault- Primeau. And I think Allen 50% retained is a good asset for another team.

I get the feeling, I do, but tanking doesn't guarantee the kind of players we hope for. Many variables in play; lottery, scouts' preferences, other teams like theBJ's and Sharks that you didn't see coming, etc.

I think we are tanking, but it didn't yield what was hoped for. I agree with the overperformance of the Habs the last two seasons, but that's beyond control. You still "have" to ice a team to play an 82 game season... shit is bound to happen.

We'll need luck. A lot of it. Wash, Pitts, TBay, TO, Oilers, NJ, Chicago, Col all lucked out. Buff, Ana, Mtl, Fla, Det, Ott all tried to tank but didn't get the luck needed many times. Just too bad for us really. We'll need UFA's and miracle trades for this team to happen this cycle. Our last shot is this season for a tanking ticket.
