HF Habs: The official 2023-2024 tank thread

I've watched a couple shift by shift videos of Tij Iginla and I'm really liking his game so far. Very high compete with good flashes of skill and high IQ plays. Imo, he would be a great reward for a Habs team that refuses to simply tank. I think he would fit in with what they're trying to build.

I plan to take in his game tonight.

We're definitely not getting Calgary's pick. I think they'll trade Markstrom at the draft & go with Wolf next year, and tank. I'm already expecting Florida's pick again.

We'll see what Panthers do this summer. They have a ton of cap space, $21m, but also only 12 players signed. They only have Ekblad & Forsling as top 4D signed past this year, and only 6 forwards.

A small difference of 5 wins (10 pts) probably puts them in the 19/20 range.
An injury or two could put them in bottom 10.

WEIRD or WORD? :dunno:
WERD like the kool kids say!

and since RHD is at a premium it would make sense for us to draft another and build the wealth.. Once we assess how each fits into our core we can trade the ones (who dont) which is a massive luxury to have.

I can get on that train. My wish is Lidstom, a top D after that is ok, as long as it's not Catton

yeah I'm all on board the Lindstrom pick, even if we win #2 I take him (unless Hugo can swing a trade back to take him at #3,4,5) he's not a consensus top 5 pick, but he is exactly what we need. outside Cellibrini / Lindstrom, there is not a clear cut prototypical solid "big" 6 we can nab.. Yeah Demidov is highly touted but I am done with these 160lb wafes (but some damn meat on your bones)

I don't think this draft has any consensus #2-3. Last year it has easy to predict the top 3 with Bedard, Carlsson and fantilli.

Is near impossible to predict from #2-10.

Levshunov is a lock to go 2 unless we win the lottery.
Bob Mckenzie has him third in his mid season ranking. We will see if he stay in the top 3 in his final ranking.

Beside Celebrini, do you prefer Lindstrom or Demidov for the Habs?

Demidov but Lindstrom is a fine consolation. It's time for us to get the game breaker.

Holy crap Iginla blows by the D off the wing and then buries it with a short sick release.
I didn't realize how powerful his lower legs are. Hard to knock off the puck even going against bigger older players.
Someone is getting a beauty with this kid.

Lindstrom over Demidov any day of the week and twice on Sunday (for the Habs).. you may get a different response from either teams that already have a big top 6, they can afford to go with a CC part deux.
Thankfully Hugo is not going to draft another small forward, otherwise they would have taken Michkov... if we pick Demidov then CC will need to be shipped out.. it's common sense, you can't have 2 mugsy bogues in your top 6.. 1 is enough, especially come playoff time..

"...cherry picking in the O-zone"

;)
Goals are the most valuable thing a player can provide. Brett Hull didn’t do much else but he turned that skill into a HOF career.

Is there a better gamebreaker in the draft?

We're not picking Eiserman, better get used to it.
I’m not saying we are. But… maybe we should. It seems like the ten players after Cellebrini are almost interchangeable in where they could get drafted.

Read this today from the Hockey News and it sums things up nicely.

”That's a big group. But what I'm saying right now is that if someone took Eiserman second overall, I would get it - he's an incredible goal-scorer. If he dropped to ninth, I would also understand - he does need to work on other facets of his game. If a team prefers Dickinson on the blueline to Levshunov (or vice versa), I wouldn't bat an eye. Same with Buium and Parekh or Silayev.”

And that kind of flows with the draft orders I’ve seen. It’s all over the place.

Us not drafting Eiserman wouldn’t surprise me. We love our two way guys. That’s part of the reason why we haven’t had a 50 goal scorer in 30 years and traded our last guy away for Kirk Muller. Everyone says we need a blue chip scorer - with Caufield’s shoulder it may even be more acute. I don’t see what’s so bad about selecting the best goal scorer in the draft.

Demidov is 5'11 180lbs. He's not small by any stretch.

We're not picking Eiserman, better get used to it. You can serve me a fat plate of crow in the .0001% chance I'm wrong. ;)

I'm becoming more and more convinced Iggy is a Hab if we are picking around #7. But if we pass Calgary in the standings that chance might be gone.

Thank you for putting the visual to my exact words!

Not sure people realize what an amazing sniper he is. I’m not buying the Kaliyev and Wahlstrom comparisons. Eiserman is in a different league. And he will score a lot more goals in the NHL than Iginla.
In 2018 a lot of people here kind of wrote off Brady Tkachuk. Now we lament not taking him.

I’m not wagging a finger at those posters. I have huge respect for anyone willing to argue for something they believe and none of us are scouts. (I didn’t even have an opinion that year as I didn’t have much time back then so I can’t even comment beyond the fact that I was happy when we took a big center in KK.)

I bring it up here because… that’s what it feels like people are doing with Eiserman. He’s going to be close to breaking CC’s all-time record and already has an elite NHL shot at 17. I get that he’s got weaknesses but they can be developed. We always talk about taking a home run swing… this should be the draft to do it.

If we don’t take him cool but man… passing on him is a bigger risk than not drafting him in my opinion.
