How is it possible that Ottawa could end up with less points than the Habs?

The good thing, even with Ottawa’s current losing streak, they’ve made up quite a bit of ground on Montreal in the last month and a half.

On January 17th Ottawa was 15 points behind Montreal with 5 games in hand, now they’re only 3 points behind with 2 games in hand.

In that timespan Ottawa had 23 points in 20 games while Montreal has only had 11 points in 17 games.

I still think there is a good chance Montreal finishes lower in the standings.

CBJ win! 4 pts back now.

Blue Jackets are @ Pittsburgh tomorrow in a back-to-back.

Coyotes host Blackhawks tomorrow.

I guess we'll see what happens in Montréal's game tomorrow. If we lose and Arizona wins, Coyotes pass us. Columbus could be within 2 pts. 🙏
As long as we lose, Wednesdays game between Anaheim and Ottawa could be interesting. Ottawa wins and they are 1 pt back with 2 games in hand.
If Anaheim wins, all of the sudden they are only 7 pts back.

Desired results for tonight:

- MTL regulation loss vs. NSH

(More immediate results needed):

- ARI win vs. CHI: ARI win + MTL reg. loss = ARI moves 1 pt ahead.
- CBJ win vs. PIT: CBJ win + MTL reg. loss = CBJ moves 2 pts behind. If PIT loses in OT/SO = PIT moves 7 pts ahead.

(Less immediate results needed):

- NJD win vs. FLA: NJD win + MTL reg. loss = NJD moves 10 pts ahead.
- SEA win vs. WPG: SEA win + MTL loss = SEA moves 11 pts ahead.
- NYI OT/SO win vs. STL: NYI win + MTL loss = NYI moves 12 pts ahead with 1 game in hand. STL OT/SO loss = STL moves 12 pts ahead.

*MTL could end the night in 27th place (Bottom-6) if they lose and ARI wins. Even if MTL loses in OT/SO and get a loser point, if ARI wins, both teams will be tied in pts, but ARI have the tie-breaker with more RWs (20 vs. 14). CBJ also with a chance to get even closer to MTL.*

Remember when we used to root for teams to fall in the standings when we had their 4th roung pick?

Now, we also have the Avs 2nd rounder to root for to fall, the Jets 1st, and next year's which has me rooting for the Panthers to fall, but more importantly the Flames to be somewhat competitive, and not fall bottom 10, but still be in the 11th to 16th worst range. Not too early to root for next year's first. If Calgary is competitive this year, maybe they don't do a full rebuild in the offseason. I'm rooting for them to make the playoffs this year, or at least come close.

I love this time of the year. Everybody breaks out their high school probability math skills.

A no system team with a no system coach? Well they changed the coach, so I'm not sure.

The soup they made on paper is just not good?
I said it early on this season don't be surprised if Ottawa out tanks us they are well practiced at the art.
It won't be the first time they pull it off despite having far more talent.
How puke worthy would a lottery win for them be.

f*** I hate this scoreboard watching. I came into this season thinking we were done with it at least until TDL.

Wait for next year… next year is the year in no man’s land territory. We won’t know what we want for the whole damn year and everyone will be pissed for the whole season. It will absolutely suck.

But at some point, the team will need to progress and get to that no man's land spot before being a playoff team and eventually (and hopefully) be a cup contender. It won't be from the bottom of the standings to suddenly playoffs. Okay, it could potentially happen, but we shouldn't expect that.

We should be at this point in the year where the playoffs are somewhat tangibly in reach even if the odds aren't great.
