The answer is this:
The Canadiens are not a good team, with little depth, and erratic play by many young players.
They empty the tank the night before to compete and try to win, they have nothing left in the tank in the second game and fare far worse because of it.
They were falling off before the all-star break, had the all-star break, had some admirable performances.. but as the season drags on, they empty the tank to stay in games, the worse it is going to get.
I don't disagree with this, though the erratic play from the youngsters has been more of a plus than the shit play by most vets. I'm also banking on the team eventually trending down for good at a certain point, but I've also expected that for some time.....which goes back to my point that the home/away splits is likely not something that can be diluted down to "effort." The sport's chaotic nature leads to such statistical oddities.
