I was clearly having Gutierrez on my list. Type of guy that frankly, for me, will be a surefire NHL'er, even if it means that his ceiling will be a 4th liner.

He's flying under the radar I think.

If you feel he's a surefire NHLer WS....should you not have picked him? :)

I think there may be less than 50 surefire NHLers in this entire draft. When you look at draft history - it's rare for more than 60 selections to become NHL regulars from one draft. Perhaps a hundred or more will get at least a cup of coffee, but to become an NHL regular....there's only so many spots. Looking back 6 years...right now there are 40-45 regulars NHLers from the 2008 draft....

We always have a tendency to overestimate the number of players who will make it...been doing it for 40+ years..hell I still think Glenn Goldup never got a fair shake. ;)
Fact is - in most drafts less than 20 per cent of the players taken in the 3rd and fourth round make the NHL..some years the number of 2nd rounders that make it hovers around the 25 per cent mark...yet if the Habs draft a kid in the second or third round that doesn't make it we label him a bust. Yet based on stats..the odds that all three Montreal picks from last year's draft make the NHL are less than 10 per cent.

I'm surprised a certain QMJHL D hasn't been drafted though he is a bit older and not a 'sexy pick'.

With the 202nd pick, the Montreal Canadiens are proud to select, from the Pelicans of the Jr A SM Liiga, defenceman Eetu Sopanen.

Eetu is a massive defenceman at 6'5 225 lbs, who is also in possession of a lot of raw talent. He plays an effective two way game and has the skating ability to make plays in the transition game, and make plays in his own zone. Eetu remains a very raw prospect since he has missed a lot of time due to injuries over the past two seasons. That the injuries were related to the neck and back only heightens my concerns. However, the talent, mixed with the size, makes me feel comfortable in rolling the dice on what could be a very effective NHL player with only a 7th round pick on the line if it fails.

Well, I don't really approach a mock draft as I would approach a real draft. My bad I guess, but I'm obviously looking for possible homeruns throughout the draft. You'd see how I would rarely pick a stricly defensive d-man in a mock and yet....would gladly do it when it will be time to play at the real draft with the Habs. I make the mock so that I have a whole lot of fun to follow the guys I picked and see how they improve statistically. And I go with guys I fell in love with. Saw Gutierrez play a lot and yes...I could have picked him. Fell just stronger about Dancs. And I didn't have a 6th rounder.

Loved him last year. Stoppe loving him this year. I feel he's showing that the ceiling might not be so high.....if we're talking about the same guy.

Completed my draft with that selection.

21. Julius Honka, D
82. Ryan Collins, D
112. Julius Bergman, D
125. Pavel Kraskovsky, F
142. Anders Bjork, F
172. Arkhip Nekolenko, F
202. Eetu Sopanen, D

Relatively happy with my draft, really wish I had a 2nd round pick though. In general, heading into the draft, one of my goals was to get bigger and faster at both ends of the ice. Defense in particular was an area of concern for me, since over the past 2 years we haven't really drafted any, and our most promising two are about to graduate to the big club.

Julius Honka provides an extremely dynamic ofd who has the potential to put up big offensive numbers and really lead our powerplay in the future. The idea of having a guy with his talent next to Subban on the powerplay is just crazy. Either that, or we could have two actually effective powerplay units. His ability to move the puck would also do wonders to our transition game. He does not shy away from the physical stuff, and can flat out skate. It took me a long while to decide between him and Larkin, but in the end I went with Honka by the slightest of margins.

The other 3 dmen I selected, Collins, Bergman, and Sopanen, all bring a blend of size with skating. Collins is more of a shutdown style, playing a very cerebral style more akin to a Hal Gill, using stickwork and position to eliminate scoring threats, while also possessing a good first pass to quickly move the puck out of the zone. Bergman is more of a 2way dman who moves the puck well and possesses fluid skating. Sopanen is a huge longshot, but if he can stay healthy enough to actually develop his raw tools, he could really be a player, very much a long term project.

In regards to the forwards I selected, I am pleased with them. They carry a pretty huge risk, since the two biggest talents among them are Russians still in Russia, which is a huge concern. In both cases, the talent is very high and is also paired with size and a certain level of grit. Since it was late round picks, I felt the risk was appropriate for the potential reward. Its not like I am taking them in the first round.(sorry whitesnake) Bjork is a relatively safe pick, a bit undersized at 5'11, but he can still grow. I really like his work ethic and hockey sense, could be an effective two way forward on a 3rd or 4th line someday.

The two picks I had the hardest time with, were the first and last ones. It was very hard to pass on Larkin in the first, and also hard to pass on another player in the last round, who I may name later, if he is selected or not by the end of the draft.

As usual it was fun :D. Hope people aren't too upset with my draft on behalf of our beloved Habs. I took a lot of risks, I think my draft has the chance of being very strong or very weak in 4~5 years. Cheers!

No idea what you're talking about. :sarcasm:

I think there's so much you could have done...and it tells me how it shouldn't be a sexy draft....doesn't mean that it won't work out in the end though. Your key player for me might be Kraskovsky. As far as Honka vs Larkin....well I would have gone with Larkin without hesitation. But I have nothing against Honka. Bleackley even Scherbak might have got my attetion before Honka but again...Julius isn't a bad pick. Never have enough of those puck moving d-man. Collins at 82 is fine. Really reliable d-man. Foegele seems to be a player with tremendous potential but I didn't see him. Tough to analyse a player like that coming from those ranks.

For me, neither Honka nor Larkin should have been there at my spot. That is of course, my opinion, and how I had ranked them on my list. And as the Habs will have moved down the draft, either 26 or 27, I highly doubt either will be available for us. At this point, for the real draft, I am hoping Scherbak is still there for us.
At 82, for me it was between Collins and Foegele. I was hopeful that Foegele would fall to the next round, and was also relatively uncomfortable taking him since I do not fully trust in the level of competition he is facing, combined with somewhat late bloomer status.

Was le_sean notified? I remember someone mentioning his PM box was full.
I sent him one this morning and it went through.

He was online a few hours after zaulty made his selection.

Doesn't likely matter though. The Detroit GM (206) hasn't been on in 2 1/2 days, lol.

At this point with the final dart throw, it's probably fine to just skip over somebody if they aren't around for a while? Let them fill in their pick afterwards? No bias here :D

With the 204th pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, the sad Chicago Blackhawks select, goaltender Blake Weyrick of the US National Development Team.

Weyrick2_large.jpg

Though he did not have the best year, Blake Weyrick is a huge goalie with good athleticism. We hope he can improve after spending several years as a starter at Brown University.

Sorry again guys, I didn't think it would get to me until a little later. Could someone let the next GM know?
