Blue Jays’ Robbie Ray wins AL Cy Young Award – BBWAA

Berrios got 5 votes; 1 3rd place vote, 1 4th place and 3 5th place votes.
I see the Tigers writer Jason Beck was the only writer to not vote for Ray to give him the unanimous win.

I agree. But 25 mil plus a player option PLUS lose a draft pick. For a 39 year old coming off arm trouble? That's no bueno. Good luck back in Cheaterville, JV. Although it would have been nice to see those every 5th day shots of Kate Upton in the stands.
:cheer:

Curious to see whether this thread likes Gausman or Ray more on the Jays. Both guys are 30, both had career years this past season, both have experience pitching in the AL East, both seem like candidates to hit their prime years in their 30s, and both are looking to get fat contracts this winter.

Obviously Ray won CY young and was on the Jays already, but curious to see who you guys prefer?

Also congrats to both Ray and Burnes for winning CY Young. This is the ultimate award for a pitcher to win so this is a major achievement for anyone regardless how the rest of their career unfolds.

I won’t debate too much as to whether or not Ray should have been the unanimous winner because Cole was worthy of 1st place votes.

What I will say is that it is refreshing to see the two of them get all the 1st and 2nd place votes. Nice to see no biases or some silly unwritten rules come into play.

If we could sign Ray to a 5yr/125 million contract, and then trade Kirk+ to the Marlins for Pablo Lopez. Our rotation would be set for years to come.

Lets do both.

I think the Blue Jays decision to invest in a state of the art training facility, having the young core in control for years to come and the fact they have publicly stated the cheques book is open is about to really begin to pay off. Exciting time to watch a potential dynasty start to build.

Guessing we would try and sign Yan Gomes to be the starting catcher? And then use the rest of the money to go after Semien/his replacement and fill out the bullpen?

we have jansen, reese and moreno wont be down too much longer, hes too good. catcher is not an area in which we should spend money, infield, bullpen, starting pitching are our real areas of need

Why go after Yan Gomes? You still have Danny Jansen and not too mention Gabriel Moreno who you better believe will get a very long look in spring training.

Goes to show that there is more to running a successful organization than simply cutting cheques to past their prime big name players.

Jansen proved yet again this year that his bat is not up to standard. They can't continue to trot him out hitting .200 at the end of the lineup.

Incorrect. Guy had a BABIP of .063 in April and still averaged .223 on the season (not that BA matters whatsoever). From May on he slashed .279/.348/.948 with a wRC+ of 151 and a very average .289 BABIP in 156 PA.

Even counting the brutal April (even by Danny's cursed BABIP standards) he would be 12th in wRC+ for catchers that had over 200PA last season. His bat will play, and even if his defense isn't excellent, it's still above average.

By fWAR, he was 20th of all catchers with at least 200PA. From May to the end of the year, he produced the 11th most fWAR among C (Major League Leaderboards » 2021 » Catchers » Dashboard | FanGraphs Baseball)

Also, keep in mind that fWAR is a counting stat, so while he was 20th for the whole year, he was actually better on the field than guys like Gomes and Sanchez who had higher fWAR (marginally better fWAR in significantly more PA).

If Jansen repeats last year's splits perfectly (but is healthy enough for 500+ PA), he's a 5+ fWAR catcher. His numbers are horribly skewed by a terrible first month where he sucked but was healthy then a spectacular rest of the year where he was not (11th best fWAR but 3rd best fWAR per PA).

What makes this even more hilarious is that Jansen's defense in April was also not very good (there were more than a few comments about it) and it improved as well.

This is not unlike Lourdes Gurriel Jr, who simply did not play well early.
