That's great news on Berrios. Full credit to the management team for stepping up and delivering. Also, so much better knowing the team isn't handcuffing itself like when Beeston had that ridiculous policy of contracts being no more than 5 years.

Why Noah for one year? Injuries? Gosh thats well worth it for one year imo. Ahh nevermind. I didn’t realize he missed last year. One year is a good gamble.

I'd have gambled on a 2 year deal if he didn't have the QO attached to him.

That's.... a lot of money... and a 2nd round pick on a 1 year deal from a guy coming off major surgery. Could work, but I was expecting him to sign for much less, and hoped it would be with us.

Poor Fish.

Yeah, I'm not at all against giving up picks for top free agents, but for one year and with that amount of risk? I'll pass. The money is fine on a one-year deal, though.

That opt out is notable as Shapiro has said many times before that he doesnt give opt out clauses.

Also Shapiro has signed 3 of the Jays 5 biggest contracts including the top 2;

1. Springer - $150M (biggest guaranteed money in Toronto sports history)
2. Berrios - $131M
3. Wells - $126M
4. Martin - $85M
5. Ryu - $80M

Edit:

Though referring the Berrios deal as the 2nd biggest in Toronto sports history is inaccurate as the Raptors signed Demar Derozan to a 5 year deal worth $139M.

So that means that it is likely 5 years, 91M when all is said and told assuming Berrios is what we think he is.

If we had lost SWR and Martin for one year of Berrios, heads would roll, so this is definitely welcome news - although this likely spells the end of Ray unless Rogers cracks open the vault further, so good luck to him.
This contract doesn’t affect this off-season since his contract wouldn’t kick in till after 2022 I believe

Remember all that talk about how Berrios looked unhappy after the trade and that he wouldn’t be staying in Toronto after his deal?

lol.

Wasn't it just a couple weeks ago someone said Berrios was likely to leave as a free agent if they Jays didn't show enough commitment to signing Matz... or something like that? People come up with the dumbest arguments.

Oh yeah that was a pipping hot take. I believe it was that if we don't sign Matz to a 5 year deal Berrios would take it personally and refuse to sign with the Jays. Completely hairbrained.

Fantastic signing and now trade. I thought we gave up too much to get him but since we got him on a great contract, it doesn't matter. Great work by the team.
